FACTS ABOUT CIVIL WARS IN EX-YUGOSLAVIA
Library Contents
THROUGH WESTERN BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS
Truth is the first casualty of any war. One can hardly find more illustrative example of this fact than the case of civil wars in ex-Yugoslavia. In trying to find an excuse to a ruthless military occupation of strategically important Balkan Peninsula the bottomless pit of Western "morality" showed its face. Surpassing any Goebbelsian dream relentless propaganda left no stone unturned. Is there any truth that subservient Western media did not distort? Any-one in the West concerned about democracy should take note. After years of propaganda it might seem impossible to peel the layers of lies and get to the Truth. For anyone interested, the BASIC FACTS of who is who in the Balkan tragedy are EASY to find. Here you will find the main pointers. Purposely, all of the facts presented here are cited documents that come from the Western sources These documents date well before the recent hostilities were anticipated. The documents could be divided into two major groups:

Crucible of War
a Journey Back to the Balkans
With the war still raging inside of me,
will I be able to record stories
of people that are so close to me?
Am I different now? In the spring of 1999, Leon Gerskovic like many other Americans was watching TV news reports of thousands of refugees fleeing Kosovo and NATO planes bombing Serbia. Unlike most other Americans, however, Leon knew firsthand what was transpiring. The news reports brought back his own memories of the war in his native Croatia only eight years earlier. As history repeated itself before his eyes, Leon could not be a detached viewer. Instead, he resolved to return to his homeland to see how victims of earlier wars were coping. Leon interviewed no politicians, military leaders, journalists, or expert analysts. Instead he spoke to teachers, priests, farmers, veterans, young people, old people, even a garbage man. He sought no villain or victim. Instead of speaking to Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians as identities, he spoke to them as individuals. Armed only with small DV cameras, he and his team would journey into the heart of the Balkans to seek out stories of ordinary people: people who had long since been marginalized. People only looking to be heard. Instead of seeking hard facts in a place where truth is elusive, Leon sought to explore the personal realities of the people he met. In the process, his own history would come back to haunt him.

Fischer von Erlach's reconstruction of Split, from his Entwuerff einer historischen Architektur , Vienna 1721, Tafel X The Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus writes admiringly of Diocletian's building at Split: (Constantine Porphyrogennetos 1949, chap 29, lines 237-57). Above: Ernest Hebrard's reconstruction of Split, Paris 1911 The current problems in ex-Yugoslavia often lead me to wonder about the state of the monuments in these lands. As a reminder of their riches, there follows a presentation on the Palace of Diocletian, addressed to non-specialists. The "Mosaic reason" for the presentation is to test the story-book approach with in-line images, so that users may judge how the technology might work with book-length treatments. Will this system be useful for teaching, perhaps providing a series of documents for self-tutoring? Split - or Spalato - is one of the most extraordinary places of the later Roman world, being no less than the palace which the Emperor Diocletian began building in 293 AD in readiness for his retirement from politics in 305. On the Dalmatian coast, adjacent to the Roman city of Salonae, it takes the dual form of a legionary camp similar to those still to be seen on the frontiers of Syria (appropriately so, for Diocletian was of necessity a military emperor) but also, with its splendid loggias, of an Italian house.

Report from a workshop examining children's health issues.

The Impact of War on Child Health in the Countries of the Former Yugoslavia
Executive Summary
The participants in the Workshop on the Impact of War on Child Health in the Countries of the Former Yugoslavia (the "Child Health Workshop") were doctors from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia, all of whom were knowledgeable about the situation of children in their own countries, and senior U.S. and European pediatricians drawn from academic and professional organizations. A common interest in the health and welfare of children provided the opportunity to put aside political differences in the interest of focusing on the state of child health and well-being in these countries that have experienced the political, economic, and social disruptions of war. The presentations and deliberations of the workshop participants provided insight into currently available information to assess the physical and mental health of the children in these countries. Workshop discussions identified gaps in knowledge that can be addressed by future studies and professional exchanges in the areas of epidemiology, primary care, trauma, acute and chronic illnesses, mental health, and child protection. The role of doctors as a conscience of the community deserves more consideration in times of stress and under difficult circumstances such as war. Pediatricians and children's doctors in particular have a professional obligation to act to protect children under such circumstances. Workshop discussions identified some key principles that can be used to guide professional practice in the protection of children. These principles include the need to keep children with their parents whenever possible, the need to protect children within their home communities whenever possible, and the importance of maintaining basic health, education, and social services for children under conditions of adversity.

Yugoslavia's Birth to its Breakup
Yugoslavia took shape around a Serbian core during a series of wars in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the Ottoman Turkish Empire gradually lost control of its Balkan territories. In 1917, the Pact of Corfu proclaimed that all Yugoslavs (meaning southern Slavs) would unite after World War I to form a kingdom under the Serbian Royal House The nation was occupied by Germany during World War II. Two guerrilla armies the Chetniks under Draza Mihajlovic supporting the monarchy and the Partisans under Marshal Tito leaning toward the U.S.S.R. fought the Nazis for the duration of the war. At the end of World War II, the monarchy was abolished and Communist Party leader Tito proclaimed the country the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia, with himself as prime minister. Eliminating opposition, the Tito government executed Mihajlovic in 1946. Tito died in 1980, and the fragility of the federation he ruled quickly became apparent. Three ethnic groups fell into conflict: Serbs dominant in Yugoslavia's politics and army, living mainly in Serbia and Montenegro but with large minorities in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Orthodox Christianity makes them natural allies of Russia.
