Zach Works
Daily Staff Former Ambassador Jack F. Matlock witnessed one of the most important events in history firsthand. As the U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1987 to 1991, Matlock was able to experience the end of the Cold War and the end of the Soviet Union itself from the inside. Last night, Matlock, who is a professor at Columbia University, related his experiences and opinions on the fall of the Soviet Empire to a packed HUB lecture hall. Professor Herbert Ellison of the Jackson School of International Studies introduced Matlock as someone who "played a key role in the changes of the 1980s." Ellison cited Matlock's intimate knowledge of Russian language, culture, and history as keys to his successful 11 years of service in Russia. Matlock's lecture, "Why the Soviet Union Collapsed," was drawn from his latest book, "Autopsy on an Empire." In the book and the lecture, Matlock related how important the fall of the Soviet Union was to human history. "What had been the largest empire on the face of the earth," Matlock said, "became simply 15 countries."

HISTORY OF FSU CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PHYSICS OF LIQUID CRYSTALS
Throughout its long and tormented history, many important scientific contributions to the fundamental knowledge of natural phenomena in general and liquid crystal research in particular have emerged from Russian scientists. One thinks first of the world-celebrated series of books, the Landau and Lifshitz Course in Theoretical Physics that also effectively documents former USSR contributions (Landau and Lifshitz 1986). In History of Liquid Crystals , Kelker (1973) places the first development of a continuum theory for liquid crystals, including the effect of external fields, in the period 1922-1933 (Oseen 1929). During this time, outstanding contributions to the understanding of physical and material properties of liquid crystals were made by Freedericksz' group in Leningrad. Indeed, Freedericksz is most famous for the Freedericksz transition, which is the basis for the operation of liquid crystals in electronic displays (Freedericksz and Zolina 1933). Freedericksz disappeared in the early forties, a particularly difficult time for the former USSR, when many people disappeared for reasons that may never be known. The "outstanding intensity and continuity of research in the Freedericksz school in Leningrad" reached a new peak in the late thirties and early forties through the works of Zvetkoff. For example, he measured the diamagnetic susceptibility of nematic liquid crystals by suspending a liquid crystal sample from a quartz thread into a rotating magnetic field (

Collection development policy review for International History
Introduction
The general policy for International History is to collect to research level, with the intention of as comprehensive a coverage as resources allow. Research level is defined as one where independent research with the published sources can be pursued. Exclusions and qualifications to this policy are mentioned below and in the General Policy Statement: see Principles of collection policy and Criteria for selection The policy for developing the collections in International History needs to be seen within the context of the complete acquisitions policy. The interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences and its publications means that subject boundaries cannot always be easily determined and described in isolation. Please refer particularly to International Relations Government , and Economic History Back to the top

General scope
An outline is given below, but in general terms the Library collects material in European and international political, social, economic and diplomatic history from the end of the eighteenth century to the present day.

FOR FOUR YEARS, I drove an articulated lorry to, from and around the former Soviet Union, for London-based Kepstowe Freight Services. Sometimes fascinating, sometimes mind-numbingly depressing, but never, ever like your average 9 to 5 job. If you want to see the "real Russia", there`s no better way of doing it. As a tourist, you are feted and welcomed, and it`s often possible to leave with an impression of onion-domed cathedrals and souvenir Russian dolls.. As a truck driver, far from the tourist trail, you see Russia in a different way...... The ever-present danger of theft, the constant corruption, the bureaucracy, the mafia......but above all, the friendliness of ordinary Russians, and the beauty of a much simpler life than ours in the West. Tipping in Moscow. This warehouse was, in cold-war days, a nuclear bomb shelter, and still had three-foot thick steel doors when I tipped there, delivering photographic equipment. The truck is a Scania 112, the trailer is a "temperature-controlled trailer". More commonly known as "fridges", we often used these trailers in winter to prevent goods from freezing, in outside temperatures of -40 degrees. The first thing that greets you on crossing the border from Poland into Belarus, at the Bobrowniki/ Berastavitsa 2 border crossing. From here, it`s about 1200km to Moscow. The sign reads "enjoy your journey"

The first victim of the Russian gas monopoly's offensive is already evident. It is BP, which might see its plans of gas exports to China and Korea destroyed by Gazprom officials' criticism.
