UZBEKISTAN, one of the independent CIS republics from 1990, formerly a U.S.S.R. republic in Soviet Central Asia. The Jews in Uzbekistan were affiliated with two communities: (1) the ancient one, the Jews of Bukhara, who speak a Tajiki-Jewish dialect; (2) the new one, of Eastern European origin. According to their tradition, the Bukharan Jews emigrated from Persia at the time of the persecutions of King Peroz (458–485), while some consider themselves as descendants of the exiles of Samaria, on the assumption that "Habor" (II Kings 17:6) is Bukhara. Anthropological examinations undertaken by L. V. Usbanin in 1926–29 proved that they originated in the Middle East (of the pure Armenoid type), although there is no information on their exact non-Jewish origin. Precise information on the spiritual works of the Jews of Uzbekistan is, however, only available from the 14th century onward. Jews of Uzbekistan emigrated to Khazaria and China because of their location at the crossroads of the caravans that traveled there. The principal traffic between the Muslim world and Itil (Atil), the capital of Khazaria, passed through northern Uzbekistan, and the information on "many Jews who came to the king of the Khazars from the towns of the Muslims" (the author al-Masudi of the tenth century) and the Jews who came "from Khurasan and strengthened the hands of the inhabitants of the country" (the anonymous "Cambridge Document") refers essentially to the Jews of Uzbekistan, which was considered as an annexed territory of Iranian-Eastern Khurasan.

In the 18th and 19th centuries the Jews in Bessarabia mainly engaged in local commerce and liquor distilling; some traded on a considerable scale with neighboring countries. In the villages main occupations were leasing activities and innkeeping. In the cultural sphere, Bessarabian Jewry in this period was not advanced. The most prominent rabbis of the early 19th century were Hayyim b. Solomon of Czernowitz, rabbi of Kishinev, and David Solomon Eibenschutz, rabbi of Soroki. Jacob Frank exerted an influence from Podolia, and Khotin became a center for Frank and his adherents. Toward the end of the 18th century Hasidism penetrated Bessarabia. top
During the 19th century the economic structure of Bessarabian Jewry remained basically unchanged. In their old occupations Jews played an important role within the agrarian economy of the region. An increasing number of Jews entered agriculture, and between 1836 and 1853, 17 Jewish agricultural settlements were established in Bessarabia, mostly in the northern districts, on lands purchased or leased from Christian or Jewish landowners. There were 10,859 persons living on these settlements in 1858; 12.5% of Bessarabian Jewry were farmers, and the region became among the largest and most important centers of Jewish agriculture in Russia. There were 106,031

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.)
The former USSR (commonly referred to as the Soviet Union) was formed as the result a weak Russian monarchy, an economic crisis, and over three years of unsuccessful fighting in World War I. Brilliantly using this situation, Vladimir Lenin led the Bolshevik Revolution and seized the government from the Tsarist regime in the Fall of 1917. Lenin was a previously exiled Marxist authority who founded the Russian Communist Party and became the first leader of the Soviet State until his death in 1924. He was able to unite people in support of Bolsheviks under the idea of “power for workers and peasants." His ideas of ending an unpopular war and redistribution of national wealth were also very popular. The Bolshevik Revolution was followed by a brutal Civil War which took millions of lives. The Revolution and Civil War tragically divided the nation and millions of people left the country. Among these were the brightest and most talented writers, scientists, and specialists including the airplane designer Sikorskiy, the writers Bunin and Nabokov, the singer Shalyapin, the artist Mark Chagal. The Soviet State was officially founded at the end of 1922.

email: kbraden@u.washington.edu The change from a centrally planned economy to a market-oriented economic system in the newly independent republics of the former USSR indicates that an improvement should occur in terms of successful biodiversity maintenance. the author suggests that on the contrary, endangered species management has deteriorated in the former USSR Evidence for the decline is presented, along with possible reasons for the lack of improvement, notably failure to establish ownership rights and a legal structure to support economic change, The paper presentation will include slides of reserves in Central Asia and the Russian Far East. INTRODUCTION Until December 1991, one-sixth of the land surface of the earth was under the management of a single state, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, directed ostensibly by a centrally planned economic system. The International union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in Switzerland noted a total of 463 species of fauna under varying classes of endangered status in the USSR in the mid-l980's. ( Table 1 With the USSR now dissolved into fifteen independent states, the important question in terms of biodiversity maintenance appears to be; are endangered fauna species better or worse off than under the former system? A corollary question is: are current economic circumstances more or less conductive to maintenance of biodiversity and protection of endangered species?

HISTORY
THE EURASIAN PATENT ORGANIZATION
Due to the termination of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics by the Resolution of the USSR State Council of November 14, 1991, the ministries and other bodies of the state management, including the USSR Gospatent, were abolished. The USSR Gospatent stopped performing its functions from December 1, 1991, due to which an uncertain situation was created in the field of industrial property protection both in the Russian Federation and in the other states - Republics of the former USSR. One of the main reasons for that uncertainty was the termination, in the CIS States, the legislative acts of the former USSR and, in particular, those on the legal protection of inventions, industrial designs and trademarks. By that time the single patent space was broken. In the territory of the independent States (subjects of the former USSR) an unfavorable situation was formed in respect of the invention activity, the creation of new kinds of equipment, goods, the implementation of new technologies, both domestic and foreign ones. The main lines for going out of the emerged crisis in the field of industrial property protection were: - establishment of an interstate system for the protection of industrial property;

Mark Weber on Jewish Role in Red Revolution...
Below is an exerpt by Mark Weber, published in the Journal of Historical Review, entitled "The Jewish Role in the Bolshevik Revolution and Russia's Early Soviet Regime: Assessing the Grim Legacy of Soviet Communism." (Jan-Feb. 1994, Vol. 14, # 1, p.4 )
"A solid understanding of history has long been the best guide to comprehending the present and anticipating the future. Accordingly, people are most interested in historical questions during times of crisis, when the future seems most uncertain. With the collapse of Communist rule in the Soviet Union, 1989-1991, and as Russians struggle to build a new order on the ruins of the old, historical issues have become very topical. For example, many ask: How did the Bolsheviks, a small movement guided by the teachings of German-Jewish social philosopher Karl Marx, succeed in taking control of Russia and imposing a cruel and despotic regime on its people?
In recent years, Jews around the world have been voicing anxious concern over the specter of anti-Semitism in the lands of the former Soviet Union. In this new and uncertain era, we are told, suppressed feelings of hatred and rage against Jews are once again being expressed. According to one public opinion survey conducted in 1991, for example, most Russians wanted all Jews to leave the country. But precisely why is anti-Jewish sentiment so widespread among the peoples of the former Soviet Union? Why do so many Russians, Ukrainians, Lithuanians and others blame "the Jews" for so much misfortune?

After the declaration of independence of Ukraine in August 1991, the telecommunication network of the former USSR in the territory of Ukraine completely passed to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Communications of Ukraine. Telecommunication sub-field in Ukraine like in all former USSR was far behind the highly developed countries, both by technical level and by the level of meeting demands for telecommunication services. Nearly all telecommunication trunk lines were analogue and used exclusively metallic cables. Telecommunication equipment was out-of-date and behind the actual state of technical development for dozens of years. Ukraine took the sixth place among the republics of the former USSR by the main communication development indicators. Ukrainian subscribers could connect with other countries only through the Moscow switchboards and telegraph offices.

At the Fifteenth Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in December Stalin attacked the left by expelling Trotsky and his supporters from the party and then moving against the right by abandoning Lenin 's New Economic Policy which had been championed by Bukharin and Rykov . Warning delegates of an impending capitalist encirclement, he stressed that survival and development could only occur by pursuing the rapid development of heavy industry . Stalin remarked that the Soviet Union was "fifty to a hundred years behind the advanced countries" (the United States France Germany , the United Kingdom , etc.), and thus must narrow "this distance in ten years". • The Republic of Armenia is one of three internationally recognized states (Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia) in Transcaucasia, the southernmost area of the former USSR. It is 11,620 square miles in area, slightly larger than the state of Maryland. It has a population of about 3.3 million (with an additional 400,000 Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan and Karabagh), of whom over 93% are Armenian. Armenia, accordingly, is the most ethnically homogenous state of all the former republics of the Soviet Union. There are some seven million Armenians throughout the world, including one million in the United States. There are also some 30,000 to 50,000 in the Detroit metropolitan area.
  • On Sept 21, 1991, Armenia held a referendum on independence and 94.05% of all eligible voters voted for it. Two days later, the Armenian Parliament declared the independence of Armenia from the USSR.
  • President Bush recognized Armenia on December 25, 1991. Former Secretary of State James Baker visited Armenia on February 11, 1992, and the US State Department established an embassy in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

The Free Jazz Scene In The Former USSR : Between Vilnius And Arkhangelsk
Teruto SOEJIMA
Translated by Yoshiyuki SUZUKI and Cathy FISHMAN A Shortage Of Information On Jazz In The Former USSR The shortage of information on contemporary jazz in the countries of the former USSR makes it difficult for us to discuss this music. It was only several years ago that people in Western countries had their first opportunities to hear actual performances of jazz from this region. In fact, no former - USSR jazz album was released in the West until 1980, when London's Leo Records released an album which became the object of a great deal of interest and curiosity. Until then, many Western people doubted that standard jazz even existed in the former USSR. Today, the former USSR is experiencing such a severe paper shortage that only an extremely small number of music magazines and books are being published. Nikolai Dmitriev, editor-in-chief of "Jazz" - the only jazz magazine in the former USSR - laments, "We can only obtain enough paper to publish one issue a year." Because of this situation, we in the West have less and less information about music in this region. Another difficulty is the fact that many areas of the former USSR broke away and became independent states. Since the Soviet era, each area and ethnic group has incorporated its own folklore into jazz to create its own jazz mood and style. But the separation and independence of these areas has made it nearly impossible to gather comprehensive information on this music.

z Through years of communist rule, God prepared the soil for the present harvest of tens of thousands of Jewish people in the former Soviet Union who have now come to faith in their Jewish Messiah, Yeshua (Jesus). One group, Hear O Israel Ministries, began doing large evangelistic festivals of Jewish music and dance in major cities in the the former USSR. In each festival the Gospel was being shared in a bold way. By God’s grace, the people responded and many Jewish people accepted Yeshua, the Jewish Messiah. To date, over 400,000 people have professed faith in the Lord through these festivals and one-half of these are Jewish. In January of 1999, the MJBI began its second school in Budapest Hungary; and in September of 1999 the third school began in Moscow, Russia. The MJBI will link with Har Zion Messianic Jewish Theological Institute to form the fourth school in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in February of 2000, and a video school will also begin in Minsk, Belarus in January of 2000. With God’s help, the MJBI plans to plant additional schools in other countries in the future. The MJBI exists for the primary purpose of equipping leaders for full-time ministry in Messianic congregations and Jewish ministry. By God’s grace, the MJBI seeks to be a tool in the Hand of God to equip and train leaders for the growing world-wide Messianic Jewish movement.
