RLC AVHRR-Derived Land Cover, Former Soviet Union, 15-km, 1984-1993
Summary:
This data set consists of 15-km-resolution land cover data for the land area of the Former Soviet Union (FSU). There are sixty land cover classes distinguished in this data set, thirty-eight of which are forest cover classes. The data set is useful for stratification of the FSU into general sub-regions of land cover for subsequent study using higher resolution satellite data. The data are provided in several different file formats, including binary raster data in Idrisi format, ASCIIGRID raster data in ASCII format (easily imported into ArcInfo), and a graphic map in JPEG format (see Figure 1). Please read all documentation before using these files. Figure 1. Land cover map, 15-km-resolution, for the land area of the FSU

September 20, 2002 Manikin gets skeleton and joints ADAM, the Advanced Automotive Manikin being built under NREL's Thermal Comfort Project, recently got a skeleton and joints. ADAM will predict the comfort of a car's occupants, enabling researchers to create thermal comfort systems that maximize occupant comfort and minimize fuel consumption. Manufactured at Measurement Technology in Seattle, ADAM will mimic human responses to the transient, non-uniform thermal environment in motor vehicles. The next step is for ADAM to receive surface segments made out of porous metal, which will allow researchers to measure physiological responses such as sweating and heating.
Heavy Hybrid Project completes a design phase Two CTTS staffers attended a Heavy Hybrid Project phase III review meeting at DOE headquarters this week. The meeting focused on the heavy hybrid component and system integration project work currently being done by Allison Transmission of General Motors and Electricore The purpose of the project is to develop and demonstrate hybrid technologies for transit buses and over the road truck applications. To date, designs of a prototype integrated CVT transmission and electric motor, motor controls, and battery pack are complete and are being tested. The next step will be the prototype demonstration phase. Results from the two-four bus demonstration will establish fuel economy performance and system reliability, develop maintenance cost data, and demonstrate the system operating characteristics in real world operation and application. This will ultimately help the industry partners determine the commercial viability of these heavy hybrid technologies.

A Brief Chronology of Radiation and Protection
by J. Ellsworth Weaver III Is it right to probe so deeply into Nature's secrets? The question must here be raised whether it will benefit mankind, or whether the knowledge will be harmful. Radium could be very dangerous in criminal hands. Alfred Nobel's discoveries are characteristic; powerful explosives can help men perform admirable tasks. They are also a means to terrible destruction in the hands of the great criminals who lead peoples to war... Concentration of enriched uranium forms natural nuclear reactor at Oklo, Gabon and becomes critical; core burns for 200,000 years. 500 BC Democritus and Leucippus of Greece postulate that all matter is made of indivisible units they call "atomos." "For by convention color exist, by convention bitter, by convention sweet, but in reality atoms and void." Galen quoting one of Democritus' 72 lost works. 450 BC Greek philosopher Anaxagoras states that matter cannot be created nor destroyed.

Sources of international statistical information are held throughout the Michigan State University Libraries. This guide is not comprehensive; rather, it provides information on a selection of some of the most important general sources. Although most of the materials listed below are located in the Government Documents Library (Main Library, 3 West), some materials are located in other Library locations. A selected number of Internet resources are also included. Please ask at the Main Library Reference Desk (Main Library, 1st floor East) if you need further assistance.

RLC AVHRR-Derived Land Cover, Former Soviet Union, Far East, 1-km, 1990
Summary:
This data set consists of 1-km-resolution land cover data for the land area of the Primor'ye and Southern Khabarovsk Regions in the Russian Far East. The data are based on 1990 NOAA AVHRR data. Labeling of land cover classes depended upon the Russian 1990 Forest Cover Map (Garsia 1990), the analyst's experience with AVHRR data, and Russian data sources. There are eight classes distinguished in this data set, five of which are forest cover classes. The objective of this work was to create a 1-km-resolution land cover map of the region of Far Eastern Siberia based on NOAA AVHRR data that might be used by World Wildlife Fund researchers to aid in the definition of remaining habitats and range for threatened animal species (Stone and Schlesinger 1996). See the data set companion file
ftp://daac.ornl.gov/data/russian_land_cover/landcover_far_east/comp/WWF_landcover_Stone_1996.pdf
The data are provided in several different file formats, including binary raster data in Idrisi format, ASCIIGRID raster data in ASCII format (easily imported into ArcInfo), vector data in ArcView shapefile format, and a graphic map in JPEG format (see Figure 1). Please read all documentation before using these files.
