Geography Songs
by Kathy Troxel Review by Martha Robinson Geography Songs by Kathy Troxel. CD and student book. $22.95 Cassette version available for $19.95. Available from http://www.audiomemory.com or Christian Book Distributor's affiliate link Geography Songs takes the family around the world and into the universe with twenty-seven songs about the solar system, continents, regions, and countries. The songs have simple melodies that are easy to learn. Each of the songs has at least two facing pages. On the first page, the lyrics appear with some black-and-white illustrations that picture things associated with the country or region. On the facing page, a map is shown with the countries, states, or provinces numbered in the order they are sung. The United States has five songs that teach the states in order of the borders around the country. Many extra pages with images and explanations of famous landmarks throughout the world add interest. The final section of the student book is a reproducible test section. Fill-in-the-blank versions of each song are shown so that the student can test his memory and spelling capabilities. A crossword puzzle of general geography terms is also included.

In the past 15 years, no part of the world map has changed more than the region of
Eurasia formerly covered by the Soviet Union and its allies. The course will offer
an overview of geographical, or "place-based," studies of the former "Socialist"
Bloc (once dominated by the USSR), including natural and human resources,
historical geography, ethnic and religious divisions, environmental questions,
and economic and political organization. The course will not simply cover
present-day Russia and Eastern Europe (or more properly, East-Central Europe).
The course will cover the 15 former republics of the Soviet Union,
the former members of the Warsaw Pact and the former Yugoslav Federation
(see list below ). Each student will closely examine one of these countries

The general extent of boundaries of Kazakhstan is almost 12,2 thousand kms, including 600 kms in the Caspian sea (in west).
    Natural conditions and resources
Kazakhstan is situated in the center of the Euroasian continent, at almost equal distance from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and is also considerably distant from the Indian ocean. Such deep continental layout appreciably determines it natural conditions. More then a quarter of Kazakhstan's territiry are occupied with steppes, half - with deserts and half-deserts, other quarter - with mountains, sea, lakes and rivers. There are almost 22 ìëí. Hectares of woods and plantings in kazakhstan, there are 11 thousands of the rivers and streams, more than 7 thousands of lakes and reservoirs; the vegetative fund exceeds 6 thousands of species, also the animal world is various. The relief of the area rises from extensive lowlands located below the level of an ocean, to highest mountain pikes, reaching 5000 meters level. The territory of it is divided from north to the south by the following nature-climatic zones: steppe-forest, steppe, half-desert, desert, foothill and mountain zone. In the territory of Kazakhstan located between two rather various regions of Eurasia - Central Asia and Siberia the influences of air masses of cold north and hot south cross. That is why main Kazakhstan's nature properties are it's sharp continental type and non-uniform allocation of natural deposits. In some years the spring moves from the south to north for 1,5 - 2 months (when in the south the spring sowing is held, in the North the soils happens to be still frozen and covered by ice and frequent storm snow blizzards).

    MAPS
    1. INTRODUCTION
Maps are collected because they provide information about relationships and distributions, particularly spatial relationships, of a very wide range of phenomena. They do this in a vivid graphic form difficult to convey in any other way. They can assist in the understanding of textual matter, and may even be an essential part of the text. Properly interpreted, maps provide a range of information for a wide and various range of users. A map is essentially a portrayal of place, in diagrammatic form, and is second only to the spoken and written word as a means of communicating what places are like. It is considered important that the Collection Development Policy for the map collection should be sufficiently flexible to adapt to changes in teaching programmes and the changing needs of users from various disciplines; should take into account the availability of certain kinds of maps; should take note of space and budget constraints; should allow for the acquisition of differing forms of cartographic materials (maps, charts, atlases, relief models, globes, remotely sensed images, computer produced maps, aerial photographs, etc.); and should allow for the acquisition of materials which will enhance the use of the collection (gazetteers, map indexes, etc.). The main responsibility for maintaining and expanding the map collection rests with the Geography and Geology Subject Librarians, who are responsible to the Group Manager, Science Information Services. The Subject Librarians need to be aware of changes in the information needs of map users and of the availability of new and different types of maps.

    World - Geography and Economy
    by Guidez.net (source: CIA WorldFactBook)
Climate: two large areas of polar climates separated by two rather narrow temperate zones from a wide equatorial band of tropical to subtropical climates
Terrain: the greatest ocean depth is the Mariana Trench at 10,924 m in the Pacific Ocean Natural resources: the rapid using up of nonrenewable mineral resources, the depletion of forest areas and wetlands, the extinction of animal and plant species, and the deterioration in air and water quality (especially in Eastern Europe, the former USSR, and China) pose serious long-term problems that governments and peoples are only beginning to address Natural hazards: large areas subject to severe weather (tropical cyclones), natural disasters (earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions) Industries: dominated by the onrush of technology, especially in computers, robotics, telecommunications, and medicines and medical equipment; most of these advances take place in OECD nations; only a small portion of non-OECD countries have succeeded in rapidly adjusting to these technological forces; the accelerated development of new industrial (and agricultural) technology is complicating already grim environmental problems
