    http://www.briancoad.com/Introduction/Geography.htm
Freshwater Fishes of Iran Introduction - Geography Revised: 07 March 2004 Acknowledgements Purpose Materials and Methods History of Research ... Quotes Iran is the second largest country in Southwest Asia (after Saudi Arabia with less than 20 freshwater fish species), has an area of 1,648,000 sq km and ranks fourteenth in the world in size, nearly as large as the British Isles, France, Italy and Spain combined (Firouz et al et al . (1979) and Davoudzadeh (1997). It is pertinent here to interject a note on geographical names. Transliteration of Farsi place names into English is possible by more than one system. This results in variant spellings for geographical features in articles and on maps of Iran. For convenience, I have followed the official standard names approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The Board publishes a gazetteer for Iran with a designation of the geographical place (e.g. lake, populated place, stream, spring, etc.) and its latitude and longitude. The latest gazetteer is available from the Defense Mapping Agency, Combat Support Center, Washington, D.C. 20315-0010. Some literature localities could not be identified from maps or gazetteers. They are placed in quotes ("....."). I have not included the diacritical marks used in the Board's system. They would be of little help to those unfamiliar with Farsi and perhaps unnecessary to those who are. Needless to say, there are variant diacritical marking systems and in any case pronunciation varies throughout Iran.

GEOGRAPHY: Antarctica is the largest remaining wilderness on Earth and is still relatively untouched by human impact. It covers an area of 13.6 million sq km around the South Pole and is covered with an ice sheet 2.1km (1.3 miles) deep on average. The thickest ice is 4.7km (2.9 miles) deep. It has no permanent human population other than a small number of personnel at 37 research stations run by 18 different nations: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, China (PR), France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea (Rep), New Zealand, Poland, the Russian Federation, South Africa, Ukraine, the UK, USA and Uruguay. The main human activity undertaken in Antarctica is scientific research, and it was at the British Halley research station that the hole in the ozone layer was discovered in 1985. The constitutional position of Antarctica is governed by the terms of the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 (which came into effect in 1961), which was signed initially by Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, the UK, Belgium, Japan, South Africa, the USA and the former USSR. The first seven of these countries have historic claims to the ice-bound continent (none of which were or are generally recognised) and the Treaty preserves the status quo, neither recognising nor repudiating the old claims, but forbidding their expansion in any way. The terms of the Treaty also forbid, absolutely, the assertion of new claims. The Treaty applies to all land and ice shelves below 60 degrees South.

"The gateway between Europe and Asia..." "A country situated at the heart of the oldest continents of earth..." "The crossroads of many important routes since centuries..." "A bridge between ages, nations and civilizations..." If you ever take a look at some of the related publications, you will see that almost every passage presenting Turkey begins with such phrases. This is natural, because Turkey is a unique country with a unique geographical location, linking East to West, and offering the present together with the past. Here, history and geography live side by side, harmoniously. The gifts of nature stand all over the country, carrying signs from the earliest ages of humanity. Although it is impossible to separate one from the other, an introduction to the country's physical characteristics will help you understand its history and its treasures much better. Between these land borders of Turkey, there rest the seas which surround it on three sides. The Black Sea to the north, the Mediterranean to the south, and the Aegean Sea to the west, fill in the remaining parts of the frame with their lengthy beautiful coastlines.
