The Coalition to Save the Elms is a non-profit charitable community based conservation organization. The Coalition was founded in 1992, in response to the heightened threat to Winnipeg's extraordinary American elm population by Dutch elm disease. As the internal and external forces have changed over the years, the organization has updated its strategy to stress the inclusion of all tree species in Winnipeg's urban forest. Winnipeg is renowned around the world for its exceptional urban forest which is composed of the largest American elm population in North America. The Coalition to Save the Elms has played a vital role in ensuring the continued survival of our precious urban tree population. The vision of the Coalition to Save the Elms is to protect, preserve and promote the health of the urban forest and the urban environment through public awareness and education.

Forests, environment and materials
Within our forest industrial research programme we concentrate mainly on pulp, paper, surface treatments and printing. However, this also includes energy technology, guidance and automatic control engineering, as well as materials technology. Among other aspects we study how paper and packaging can be treated so as to make them as strong and durable as possible. Our research contributes to creating durable packaging that not only has a good surface printing area but is recyclable. The research aims also at developing new areas of application for paper-based packaging.
Our materials science research is also in cooperation with the forest industry, but is characterized by another important industry, the steel industry. Here the focus is on how steel performs in various types of tools among other aspects.
Nature not only provides an essential base for industry but also represents an important resource both for people and the environment. In our environmental research we examine the human affects on the ecosystem as well as the technical, the social scientific and natural technological aspects of the role of forests in an ecologically sustainable society.

In August 2002, President Bush unveiled the "Healthy Forests Initiative," a legislative plan to reduce risks posed by wildfires. Environmental groups say the plan is healthiest, not for the forests and communities affected by wildfires, but for the timber companies that would be permitted to thin the forests. Some criticisms leveled against the "Health Forests" plan:
  • The plan does not put enough emphasis on protecting residents from immediate risks.
  • Increased logging called for in the plan could actually worsen the problem of forest fires.
  • The plan could limit public input into Forest Service decisions.
  • The plan could limit use of the courts to challenge the legitimacy of fuel reduction projects.
The Bush administration makes a case for its plan on a website at WhiteHouse.gov . The proposed legislation, says the website, "will grant the federal government additional tools to address the problem of unnatural fuel buildup in our forests." Forest thinning projects needed to reduce fuel buildup are "too often hindered by unnecessary procedural delays and litigation," according to a Bush press release . The Bush plan proposes to reduce such hindrances.

Environment And Forest Department
Policy Note – 2003 – 2004 Demand No. 14 INTRODUCTION Forests are the world's air conditioners and the earth's blanket; without them world would be a bleak and inhospitable place. Forests are renewable resource and nature's gift to mankind. The forest eco-system of the State consisting of a variety of flora and fauna representing remarkable bio-diversity is essential for environmental stability and food security. As a life supporting system forests play a vital role in the ecological stability and rural development of our State. Forestry sector forms the second largest landuse after agriculture and the largest in Government sector. Tamil Nadu has a great tradition of preserving it's forest wealth and concern for environment, which has taught us to respect nature and understand the complex inter relationship between living and non-living things. The ancient Tamil poets have emphasized the importance of dense forests, clean water and fertile soil in providing ecological security to mankind. This great tradition of preserving our environmental heritage has been enshrined in the constitution of India under the directive principles of State Policy.

As anyone can tell you, a forest without trees just isn't a forest. All forests have lots of trees, so does that mean that a forest in Russia is pretty much like a forest in Brazil? No way! Forests are different all over the world.
Two things can help you determine what kind of forest you're looking at: the climate (warm or cold) and the kinds of trees you see. Some trees are called evergreens, because they never lose their green leaves or needles. Others are deciduous, which means their colorful leaves come tumbling to the ground each fall.
Expansive deciduous forests once covered the eastern half of what is now the United States, but much of this temperate climate forest has been cut down to clear land for crops and cities. If you hike what's left of these woods in the fall, you'll see a forest in color. The oak, beech, maple, and hickory trees turn shades of red, gold, and orange before dropping their leaves. You may see white-tailed deer and maybe, if you're lucky, black bears.

America’s forests are undergoing a crisis of survival. Of the 1 billion acres of original forests that once towered over America, only five percent now remain. The timber industry and the United States Forest Service are destroying our nation’s remaining forest ecosystems by logging in the last regions of Ancient and wild forests.
Save America’s Forests is a nationwide political organizing campaign, working to pass legislation in the U.S. Congress that will protect and restore America’s last wild and natural forests. We provide support to over 600 environmental and citizens groups and business in our coalition, and represent their views to Congress, the Administration, and the national press.

Social, Environmental and Economic Report
A corporate commitment to sustainability
Sustainable forest management is the key to the success of State Forests as a commercial forestry organisation. As a Government Trading Enterprise responsible for managing natural resources for a large number of values, it is a huge challenge to adequately measure and report our performance in all of these areas. An increasing trend is measuring and reporting performance against what has been called the Triple Bottom Line - social, environmental and economic. A balanced Triple Balanced Line is one which successfully maintains economic prosperity, environmental quality and social responsibility. For State Forests the Triple Bottom Line means more than just delivering social, environmental and economic outcomes. We also recognise our responsibility to be a good corporate citizen, managing forests for the present as well as the future.
Triple bottom line reporting
To communicate with the community, staff and other stakeholders State Forests produces an annual report called

Environmental and Social Values Report 1999/2000
In this, our third Environmental and Social Values Report, we again provide information on the environmental and social values of State Forests. Each forest value is assessed by a set of performance indicators that measures various aspects of the current estate and management. Annual monitoring of these indicators provides opportunity to assess levels of achievement in ecologically sustainable forest management. We will continue to analyse the results to evaluate our progress towards ecologically sustainable forest management and the performance of environmental services. Why these values and indicators? The seven forest values assessed in this report were selected on the basis of:
  • Values recognised in our Corporate Plan Input from representative stakeholder groups Reference to internationally recognised methods of measuring progress towards ecologically sustainable forest management Consistency with national criteria and Regional Forest Agreements.
The 21 indicators presented in the Report were selected, based on information currently available, to portray our performance in managing the forest values. The indicators are also consistent with nationally agreed criteria for measuring forests and requirements of Regional Forest Agreements.

Cloud Forests
By JORGE SALAVERRI
Special to Honduras This Week
Because of its mountainous topography, Honduras has more cloud forests than any other country in Central America, boasting nearly 40. The largest cloud forests have been made into national parks. Others are wildlife refuges, biological reserves or simply water protection areas. Of the 13 national parks located in Honduras, 12 are located in highland cloud forests.
These cloud forests are the source of life for the rest of Honduras. They are veritable pure water factories. Trees, mosses, bromeliads and the humus of the forest floor work as a huge sponge to collect rainfall and release it slowly.
The conditions that make cloud forests so good at producing water also make them the perfect home for a variety of unique animals and organisms.
Cloud forests are easy to recognize by the clouds that caress them almost all year long. At altitudes of about 1,800 meters, the clouds deposit tiny drops of water on the forest trees and plants. This begins a process called horizontal precipitation.
The best indicators that you're in a cloud forest are plants like bromeliads, orchids, clusia trees and tree ferns. Cloud forests are also home to an abundance of mosses that cover both the tree trunks and the forest floor. Sometimes the term moss forest is used as a synonym for cloud forest.
