Are Yangjuan's and Pianshui's Forests Sustainable? The forest ecology groups of SU (Prof. Zeng Zongyong, Zhao Delong, Wang Changhe, Liao Juan, Zeng Ting, Yuan Yaowu, and Zhang Yongjiang ) and UW (Prof. Tom Hinckley, Phil Chi, Victoria Poling, Diane Tsao, Marie Tsiang, Chris Wentz, and Tom Worker-Braddock) are doing quatitative measurements of local forest cover and forest growth, while Diane Tsao, with the help of Ma Vihly and Ma Fagen, measures patterns of wood consumption. Together they try to answer the question of whether current levels of usage are sustainable. The main method for forest assessment is counting, measuring and determining the ages of trees and undergrowth on 10x10 or 20x20 meter plots. Here professor Tom Hinckley points out patterns of ring growth on a recently felled tree to Joanne Ho, Chris Wentz, and Zhao Delong Being out all day plotting develops outdoor skills as well as scientific skills. Forest Ecology Group
Background
The Forest Ecology Group has existed as a specialist group of the BES for well over 15 years focusing on all aspects of temperate and boreal woodland ecology and linking with other groups interested in woodland issues.
Aims The Group aims were revised at the 2003 BES Annual Meeting and are:
  • To stimulate discussion on all aspects of forest ecology
  • To foster links with relevant groups and organisations within and outwith the BES both nationally and internationally
  • To share ecological knowledge amongst researchers, practitioners and policy-makers
  • To achieve the above through holding meetings, conferences, workshops and symposia and by developing the Web site

ASPIS
Introduction L'Advanced Spectroscopic Imaging System (ASPIS) is a airborne proximal sensing system for the research and the monitoring of the agricultural and forestal environment. Its characteristics enable to study environmental resources as typologies forests, estimates of the croops and trees productivity, classify and map different land cover and to monitor changing in use of that, estimates forestry and reforestation area. The high radiometric and spatial resolution of the ASPIS, give the possibility to make narrow study on vegetation (such as Nitrogen content, leaf pigments). It's actually used in a collaboration with Co.R.I.Al - BARILLA industries. The airborne platform (SKY ARROW 650 TC - Iniziative Industiali Italiane) makes of ASPIS an extreme flexible instrument. It is used with success under hard condition or in mountain environment. The system is made up of 4 digital cameras for the acquisition of digital spectroscopic images in the range 0.4 - 1.1mm. All the image are download on the PC in real time. The spectral bands are selected by filters, set on an electromechanical wheel with eight positions. The CCD sensors have an high quantum efficiency (until the 90%), make it possible to work also with very short exposure time, in standard conditions.

Tree Uprooting: Review of Impacts of Forest Ecology Randall J. Schaetzl, Scott F. Burns, Donald L. Johnson and Thomas W. Small This paper reviews the ecological effects of tree uprooting. In many forests, disturbance by uprooting is the primary means of maintaining species richness and diversity. Treefall may be due to exogenous factors or it may be endogenously created, although the former predominate. The canopy gap formed by downed trees is often vital to community vegetation dynamics and successional pathways, by providing high light niches (gaps) for pioneer species, by encouraging release of suppressed, shade-tolerant saplings, and through recruitment of new individuals. Nutrient cycling may be affected by uprooting as subsoil materials are brought to the surface, via additions of woody debris to the forest floor, through exposure of bare mineral soil, and by changes in throughfall chemistry. The influence of the resultant pit/mound microtopography on understorey herb distribution is largely due to microclimatic and microtopographic variation. Tree seedling distribution, however, is related to microtopography primarily through differences in soil morphology, nutrition, and moisture content of mound and pit sites.

EARTH DAY - EVERY DAY
In ancient India, over 2,003 years ago, as annual public works projects, kings and emperors planted trees along the roads to provide shade for weary travelers. Today, people all over the world are working hard to keep our planet green. Earth Day (sometimes called Earth Week) is a time put aside each year to remind us all how important it is to accomplish this goal. These sites explain why it's so important to keep our planet green, and what we can do to help. Have fun learning about Earth Day!
Rosa Stewart School has created a program that both celebrates Earth Day and raises money for their school called Litter Bucks!

Global Climate Change and Human Impacts on Forest Ecology
Edited by Puhe, J., Ulrich, B.,
Springer 2001
Hardcover 592 pp, 110 figs, 6 in color, 56 tabs ISBN 3540671277 Postglacial Development, Present Situation and Future Trends in Central Europe To judge the future development of forest ecosystems, their history, state, as well as changes in their boundary conditions have to be taken into account. For centuries man has utilized and often overutilized forests. During the last 100-200 years, forests in central Europe have been intensively managed and at the same time subjected to deposition of acidity and nitrogen compounds from air pollution. In addition, we currently witness a climate change which seems to be generated by man-made emission of greenhouse gases. This volume presents relevant information on the development of central European forest ecosystems in a historical perspective, and it reviews the ongoing environmental changes and their potential impacts. Further, scenarios on the future of central European forest ecosystems and the options for a sustainable forest management are discussed. From the reviews
"... a major contribution to forest ecosystems research ... elaborate analysis for the social sciences and for climate policy makers ... has a comprehensive list of references and a very elaborate subject index."
