The Wonder and Mystery of Forests: Forest Ecology
By exploring healthy forests students learn that there is much more to a forest than just trees. They will learn how a tree works, why certain species grow where they do and why humans and animals need trees. Students also discuss forests as a system of plants, animals, and decomposers. Key concepts/vocabulary: succession, dichotomous key, habitat, erosion, photosynthesis, decomposers, deciduous/evergreen, xylem, phloem, seed dispersal, and succession.

RESEARCH PROGRAMME 1:
FOREST ECOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT Programme Manager: Marcus Lindner The main topics under this area include:
  • Carbon sequestration in forestry
  • Effect of environmental changes on forestry
  • Management of forests under various pressures
  • Forests as a renewable source for energy and other goods and services
  • Biodiversity

Recent changes in forest growth and soil chemical properties reported for many European forest ecosystems emphasise the need for detailed investigation into the interrelationships between forest growth, forest nutrition and site conditions in order to assess the sustainability of the productivity of forest ecosystems. Also the health condition of forest ecosystems, including both biotic and abiotic impacts, require continuous research and follow-up. Forests in Europe are mostly managed, however, the management objectives and intensity vary. There is a continuously increasing trend towards managing forests as ecosystems taking into account both economic benefits and environmental values. In sustainable forest management various pressures and demands, both environmental and societal, need to be considered, e.g. climate change, air impurities, land use changes, protection, biodiversity, certification, timber production and water resources. Mitigation of climate change and carbon balance as well as the impact of climate change on European forests will remain a key issue in research. The Ministerial Conferences in Strasbourg, Helsinki and Lisbon, as well as the Kyoto meeting clearly state the demand for reliable information on these topics.

The Changing Forest: Forest Ecology
In The Changing Forest: Forest Ecology module, students examine ecological systems of a forest, analyze interdependencies within a forest ecosystem, and explore factors that shape the development of forests. In addition, they develop critical thinking skills and discover the importance of scientific analysis when making decisions about forest issues. This module includes a special section on Fire Ecology . Here's what's inside:
  • Introduction
  • Background Information
  • Student Activities:
  • Adopt-A-Forest
Forests support a diversity of plants and animals that vary according to the geographic location of the forest. In this activity, students will identify a section of a local forest or wooded area to study and investigate the types of plants and animals that live there. Through this investigation, students will identify the biological and structural diversity within a forest ecosystem.
  • Cast of Thousands
Student will further explore the variety of life in their adopted forest and will discover the importance of this biological diversity. They will take measurements, in much the same way as a forester does, to draw conclusions abut the overall health of their forest. As an extension, students will compare the information that they have collected with that of another class in a different region.
  • The Nature of Plants
Through a series of experiments, students will learn the importance of photosynthesis and the elements needed for photosynthesis to take place. They will also discover the factors necessary for healthy plant growth and the detrimental effects of a variety of environmental stresses.

Forest Ecology Program
The forest habitats of the Tahoe basin have been significantly impacted by human activity since European discovery in 1844. During the period from 1870 to 1890, many of the forests in Tahoe were clearcut to be used as firewood, shoring for mines, and homes in support of the Comstock mining operations in Virginia City. In particular, large old growth trees which can take 300 to 400 years to grow back were cut down. Fire, which was an important natural process in the forests, has been eliminated over the past hundred years in response to a nation-wide policy of aggressive fire suppression. As a result, today's forests are less structurally diverse and support fewer wildlife species, including many sensitive species. The Forest Ecology program focuses on restoring the forested habitats of the Tahoe Basin through direct implementation of projects on Conservancy property. These projects are designed to improve habitat, reduce fire threat, and promote natural processes through the reintroduction of prescribed fire, thinning of conifer and aspen stands, and road obliterations. Recognizing its importance in naturally functioning forests, prescribed fire is being emphasized to restore habitat diversity by creating a mosaic of vegetation types and ages. Fire also reduces the threat of wildfire by consuming understory vegetation and ground fuels. However, important habitat features such as snags, logs, and large trees, are protected prior to conducting burns.

Mangrove Forest Ecology THE MANGROVE FOREST MAP Working Paper by Alfredo Quarto, Director, Mangrove Action Project Probably no other distinct plant community has attracted as much curiosity and scientific attention for as long as have the mangrove forests. "Rollet's (1981) annotated bibliography lists 5,608 published titles through 1975 with one of the first being the written account from the chronicle of Nearchus, dating back to the Greek mariners of 325 BC." (Snedaker, S.C., University of Miami, Division of Marine Biology and Fisheries) LIVING AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA Photo - Mangrove Forest, Bhitankanika,Orissa, India "One perceives a forest of jagged, gnarled trees protruding from the surface of the sea, roots anchored in deep, black, foul-smelling mud, verdant crowns arching toward a blazing sun...Here is where land and sea intertwine, where the line dividing ocean and continent blurs, in this setting the marine biologist and the forest ecologist both must work at the extreme reaches of their disciplines..." ("Caribbean Mangrove Swamps" by Klause Rutzler and Ilka C. Feller, Scientific American, March 1996, p. 94)
