Participating Faculty What We Do Our faculty are actively researching various aspects of forest biology ranging from basic ecological processes to applied management concerns. We use primarily the oak-dominated hardwood forests of southeastern Ohio as a laboratory ecosystem, but we contribute to knowledge bases and debates on forest processes at a national level. Our four forest ecologists are mutually contributing insight at the levels of individual plants, populations, communities, ecosystems, and landscapes. Working with almost twenty graduate students and post-docs, we collaborate with interest groups and government agencies as diverse as the local medicinal herb cooperative and the USDA Forest Service. We are nationally distinctive as a formally designated Forest Ecology group approaching forest ecological issues outside the scope of commercial forestry. In practice, this has allowed us to take a broader view of human impacts on forest ecosystems than a strict production forestry program would allow. Despite the recent formation of the Forest Ecology group, it has earned recognition through consistent publishing, grant acquisition, and papers presented at national meetings.

Ancient Forest Ecology
"It is easier to put a person on the moon than it is to manage one acre of forest. Putting a person on the moon is a process in black and white; you either hit it or miss it. But managing a forest acre is all gray." - Chris Maser, 1990
Ancient Forest is forest that has never been managed, or signifigantly changed by humans, and it is increasingly rare and precious. But quite apart from its beauty or spiritual value, untouched forest gives us insights into how natural forests work. When we manage forests we can never fully understand, or anticipate, the outcome unless we can compare it to natural forest. Natural forests also give us insight into how global changes in climate, air pollution, diseases, and other wide-ranging changes are affecting our forests. Ancient forests are a valuable asset that have often recieved surprisingly little study, and are fast being lost.
Ancient Forest and Old Growth
The most studied kind of ancient forest is called "old-growth forest". Old-growth forests differ from younger forests in three main ways. First, they have trees that are much older than the average age for the tree species. Second, they generally have greater numbers of snags, or dead standing trees, than younger forests. And third, they have a large number of logs on the forest floor compared to younger forests. In some old-growth forest ecosystems, there are numerous logs across streams which tend to form debris dams that are less common in younger forests.

Recommended Learning Resources
PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES
It is expected that students will:
  • describe nutrient cycles and energy flow in forest ecosystems
  • relate climatic factors to plant distribution
  • describe forest succession
  • identify uses of the Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification in British Columbia
To view the prescribed learning outcomes for Forest Ecology in other grades click on an icon below.
SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
Students gain basic understanding of nutrient cycling, energy flow, and plant distribution through a variety of classroom and field activities.
  • Provide students with a definition of forest succession as well as resources illustrating changes in an ecosystem over time. Ask students, individually or in teams, to hypothesize factors at work within this ecosystem (e.g., shade tolerance) and make presentations describing how these factors have determined succession. They apply information obtained from their models to a recently harvested area and an unharvested area to identify what is there and why, and to predict future growth patterns. Ask students to explain how could they test their hypotheses.
  • Invite students to examine different climatic characteristics and elevations in several areas, noting variances in slope and moisture regime, vegetation, and species of plants.

Modeling Carbon Storage In Redwood Forests With Different Management Scenarios

Abstract: Forest ecosystems have a great potential to contribute to long-term carbon sequestration. Coastal redwood ( Sequoia sempervirens Introduction Forest ecosystems of the PNW are documented as the most productive in the world (Franklin 1988). Of PNW forests, coastal redwood ( Sequoia sempervirens ) ecosystems are one of the most highly effective carbon sinks because redwood is fast growing and can accumulate tremendous biomass over its long-life span (1500 years). In addition, because older growth redwood is highly decay resistant, carbon remains in woody debris much longer than in other forest types, further increasing total forest carbon stores. Although redwood ecosystems are inherently extremely productive and effective carbon sinks, their potential has been substantially reduced as a result of land-use conversion and harvesting practices. In many cases, redwood ecosystems are undergoing a conversion from net sinks to carbon sources. Recent research has shown that mature forests (200-400 years) of the Pacific Northwest (PNW) are significantly more effective at storing carbon than short rotation forests (40-60 years) (Harmon et al . 1990). Given the impact of harvesting on carbon storage in many forested ecosystems, there is growing concern over how present management practices can restore and maintain a substantial carbon sink.
