Search EUROPA Sustainable Forestry and the European Union In the European Union (EU), forest policies are implemented by Member States within a clearly defined framework of established ownership rights and with a long history of national and regional laws and regulations based on long-term planning. The forest based commercial activities fall within the open sector of the economy. Though forests per se are not dealt with at EU level, there is an increasingly complex array of EU legislation and policy initiatives within different EU sectoral policies that considerably influences the forest policies of the Member States. An EU Forestry Strategy was therefore adopted in 1998, which puts forward as its overall principles the application of sustainable forest management and the multifunctional role of forests. In line with the principle of subsidiarity, meaning that every administrative decision should always been made at the most appropriate level taking into account the specific local circumstances, this Strategy seeks to establish a coherent framework of forest-related actions at EU level. It also aims to improve the linkages and co-ordination between different policy areas as well as the coherence with the forest policies of the Member States.

Trees are important for both urban and rural ecosystems. Mature trees maintain desirable microclimates and shelter wildlife. Trees also have economic value as a raw material used in producing paper, buildings, furniture, and other wood products. Examples of communities balancing these environmental and economic considerations are in this section.

Background
  • The 1987 Bruntlund Commission Report , "Our Common Future," which set a vision for sustainable development; and The 1992 Earth Summit , which raised awareness on the importance of practicing sustainable forestry.
Governance In July of 2000, the Sustainable Forestry Board Technical Aspects The SFI Standard (SFIS) spells out the requirements of compliance with the program. The SFIS is based on six principles that address economic, environmental, cultural and legal issues, in addition to a commitment to continuously improve sustainable forest management. The SFIS contains 11 objectives and 36 performance measures covering sustainable forest management, procurement of wood and fiber, public reporting, and continuous improvement. Within these objectives are performance measures, core indictors and secondary indicators. Compliance with the 117 core indicators is integral for conforming to the SFIS. The accreditation system used by the SFI program complies with the requirements of the American National Standards Institute and the Registrar Accreditation Board. Verification of compliance with SFI program requirements may be first, second or third party audited. However, third party auditing is required to ensure compliance with the SFIS. Initial recertification must take place within three years and subsequent reviews must occur at least every 5 years thereafter. Periodic surveillance audits are required for program participants that use the SFI label.

Issues
We face many challenges in the 21st Century. However, by understanding the issues and options we can make informed choices. This section provides overviews of complex topics and links to more detailed information. As consumers, we make choices every day about what we eat, what we buy, where we visit, how we live...These choices have repercussions on the world we live in and the other people we share it with. As the population grows and demand on resources becomes greater it becomes harder to maintain our standard of living without sacrificing something. It is the hope of the Temperate Forest Foundation that each citizen make informed decisions with respect to these choices. The Temperate Forest Foundation is committed to the principles of sustainable development, a concept defined in the 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development report (commonly known as the Brundtland Report) as, "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Forests play an important part in our lives; we utilize wood and wood products everyday, we use wood to build our homes and places of business, and we use wood for fuel. Besides using it as just a resource, forests also provide numerous other benefits; aesthetic and emotional. They are places of repose and recreation, they are systems filtering our water and providing habitat for wildlife. Wood is the one truly ecological and sustainable resource.

Public Policy Goals for Sustainable Forestry on All Private and Public Land in the United States
PREAMBLE
The forest products industry has a strong record of stewardship on the land it owns and manages. Forest industry lands include some of the most productive forests in the world. Innovative programs to create habitats and landscapes, and to enhance the diversity of flora and fauna, offer excellent examples of how industry foresters employ modern forest science in the protection of locations that are unique in their geological, ecologic, or historic value. At the same time, these forests are meeting the needs of our society for homebuilding and other building products, as well as for printing, packaging, and sanitary products. Many companies have effective programs to extend their technology and stewardship knowledge to nonindustrial private landowners who own most of the forestland in this country.
PRINCIPLES FOR SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY
America's managed forests make a vital contribution to the nation and to the world by providing economic, consumer, environmental and aesthetic benefits indispensable to our quality of life. A vital forest-based economy provides wood and paper products, employment, and a viable tax base. Accomplishing sustainable forestry on private land requires a partnership among landowners, contractors, and the companies that purchase wood.

Lac La Biche takes the spotlight during National Forest week
Throughout 2004 a number of special events and educational activities will be held to highlight the importance of the forests in Lac La Biche and throughout Alberta. Lac La Biche and northeastern Alberta have strong historic ties to the boreal forest. As Forest Capital of Canada, Lac La Biche has a unique opportunity to create a greater awareness among all Albertans about this distinctive part of the province. The designation as Forest Capital recognizes the valuable role that forests play in the economic and environmental health of our communities. It also provides an opportunity to generate a greater understanding of the forest and the sustainable forest management practices that are carried out in Alberta.
The Government of Alberta is responsible for maintaining a balance between activity and conservation, while taking into account the economic, social and environmental benefits that Albertans value.

Southern Africa: Learning How to Manage Protected Areas by Wayne Freimund
Photo by Wayne Freimund Stretching down the southern tip of Africa, the Cape Floristic Kingdom is home to incredible plant and animal biodiversity.
Wayne Freimund is the Arkwright associate professor of wilderness studies and director of the Wilderness Institute at the University of Montana, Missoula, MT.
I magine a vast field of flowers bathed in warm sunshine. The field undulates around you in a gentle breeze, with colors in every hue, some so iridescent that they seem to glow. You are in one of the 25 richest and most threatened reservoirs of plant and animal life on Earth, a place with more than 8,000 plant species, 70 percent of which are found nowhere else. You are in South Africa, in the Cape Floristic Kingdom, one of only six floral kingdoms worldwide. The Cape Floristic Kingdom is by far the smallest floral kingdom, covering on 35,000 square miles (90,000 km2) in an arc stretching along the southern tip of Africa. Its beaches and inland valleys, plains, and mountains support a tremendous variety of habitats. Its plant species richness is therefore even greater than that of the Boreal Kingdom, which covers 40 percent of the Earth.
