I must admit a part of me was skeptical about writing a story on timber harvesting. After all, trees are vital to our life here on Earth so why should we be cutting them down. Through photosynthesis trees filter carbon dioxide and other pollutants which increases oxygen for us to breathe. When managed properly, trees also provide clean water and a healthy wildlife habitat.
Prior to my trip to Reading, my impression of cutting trees was definitely not a positive one. My father-in-law, who owns property in Pennsylvania, sold rights to a disreputable harvester who scarred the land with his negligent actions. Trucks drove across the stream meandering through the front of the property leaving massive ruts in the streambank that also extended across the meadow and into the forest. I remember following this path littered with debris and junk food trash about a hundred yards into the forest wondering if this is what timber harvesting was all about. I was devastated at the site of the massive cut that occurred on this beautiful land. At that point, I knew there was no way that I would ever support such endeavors.
However leery I was though, I decided getting educated on the issue of managing our forests was the only way to look at timber harvesting objectively. After all, as an American I know we are the biggest consumers in the world and we also generate the most waste. I began to feel hypocritical about the notion of protecting our forests from any harvesting upon learning that we get over

The Sustainable Forestry Community Web Ring
Welcome to the Sustainable Forestry Community Web Ring home page, a service of the Harwood Foundation for Sustainable Forestry. The goal of this ring is to bring all the actors in sustainable forestry scattered throughout the globe together under one umbrella. The goal will be met if the ring permits sustainable forestry adherents to become aware of all the players involved in this endeavor, to keep abreast of who is doing what, to promote the expansion of sustainable forestry practices, and to encourage information exchange among them. The Web Ring Control Panel, shown below, is located on the home page of every organization in the Sustainable Forestry Community Web Ring. The panel allows users to navigate easily between Web sites that are directly involved in promoting sustainable forestry. You can move through web ring pages sequentially, or view lists of pages using the 'Next Five,' 'Previous Five,' 'Random,' and 'Index' buttons. By following the links through the web ring, you will find information from around the world on organizations actively involved with sustainable forestry policies, practices, and products as defined by the Forest Stewardship Council. Sustainability research and education efforts at Clemson University span all areas of agriculture and forestry. Sustainable agriculture must be ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially responsible. In addition, there are specific considerations for fruits and vegetables to receive "organically grown" certification.. Sustainable forestry refers to an overall commitment to environmental conservation that integrates the production of trees for useful products with reforestation and conservation of soil, air, and water quality, wildlife and fish habitat, and aesthetics. Work in both agriculture and forestry is being carried out at various locations across South Carolina. A demonstration plot at the Calhoun Field Laboratory has been developed to test various niche crops , including organic produce, cut flowers, and medicinal herbs. A farmer’s market was established on the main campus to sell the fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers. Future plans include adding free-range chickens to produce drug-free broilers and laying hens.

We take a comprehensive, integrated approach to rural community development that creates economic opportunities, conserves and restores the environment, and strengthens communities. Since 1997, our Forestry Program has been working with private landowners, government agencies, and other non-profit organizations, to implement sustainable forestry projects through innovative strategies that provide a transition toward sustainable utilization and marketing of forest resources. As one of the thirteen implementing partners in the Ford Foundation's Community-Based Forestry Demonstration Program, we are seeking workable solutions that build on the significant assets of the region.

Introduction Contributors Sustainability of Forests: An Attempt at a Biological Interpretation by Professor Dr. Peter Schutt Sustainable Development, Sustainable Yield Forestry, and the Meaning of Life by Jordan S. Tanz The Postmodern Forest: Images Differing by Dr. Steven Taubeneck Sustainable Development: What Do We Owe to Future Generations? by Dr. Thomas Hurka INTRODUCTION The conference was organized around the idea that sustainable development and competition are in some sense competing visions of our global future. Nowhere is this potential conflict more salient than in the forestry industry. Canada, and B.C. in par ticular, shares with Germany a concern for the fate of forests and for the industries based on forest resources. This conference sought to bring together academics from both Canadian and German universities to explore the ethical challenges associated with these competing visions. Those attending the conference had the opportunity to hear talks from a wide variety of specialties, ranging from botany to cultural studies to philosophy. Of the talks given, four were developed into papers to be included in this publication. Special thanks go to Dr. Schutt for making his speaking notes available for this purpose.

NATIVE AMERICAN FORESTRY AND THE SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY FUND
The 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development defined sustainability as the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Others have further refined this so that sustainable development is defined by the integration of economic, sociopolitical and ecological values. Applying these concepts to forest resources, sustainable forestry involves managing forests in a way that provides for our current needs while ensuring that the needs of future generations will be met. Sustainable forestry encompasses the material and non-material components of the forest, taking into account the spiritual and cultural values connected to the land with an overall goal of establishing and maintaining a healthy forest while producing quality wood and non-wood products.

C.T. Smith Book Series: FORESTRY SCIENCES Volume 71 Bioenergy from Sustainable Forestry synthesizes information needed to design or implement sustainable forest management systems for production of biomass for energy in conjunction with other forest products. It is organized around the criteria for sustainable forest management: productivity, environment, social issues, economics, and legal and institutional framework. More than 25 international experts from 10 countries have brought together available ecological, physical, operational, social and economic information and identified gaps in knowledge related to biomass production and harvesting systems. This is the first time that such comprehensive information has been brought together under one cover, using an integrated, holistic approach. Guiding principles and state of the art knowledge are emphasized. The book will enable forest resource managers and planners to evaluate the ability of specific forest regions to sustainably meet bioenergy production demands. Dear Forest Landowner, As a private forest landowner, you are a vital link in the sustainability of Virginia's forest resources. Your land provides many benefits to all Virginians including wood products, wildlife habitat, clean air and water, and recreation opportunities. Because forest landowners like you own and control three-quarters of the state's forest land, the decisions you make regarding your forest today will impact the quality of Virginia's forests for many years. The purpose of this publication is to provide you with some basic information on forest management and specifics on how timber harvesting should be conducted to ensure the sustainability of your forest resources. This guide is designed to help you make informed, knowledgeable decisions about managing your forests and will also help you understand the importance of timber harvest planning and how to work with professional foresters and natural resource management agencies. The information contained in this publication regarding taxation and environmental regulations is accurate but should not be construed to be official government interpretation. Regulations and laws are constantly evolving, so you are encouraged to always obtain professional forestry assistance before making your final management decisions.
