Sustainable Forestry Improvement Collaborative Information and Registration Form Making responsible forestry work for private landowners
In the United States there are over 9.9 million forest owners and 93 percent of them hold less than 100 acres of forest. There is increasing interest by private forest owners to protect their forests from over harvesting and mismanagement. Forestry cooperatives and organizations are ways for forest owners to work together and pursue good forest management. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has established ten principles for responsible forestry as well as systems to recognize good forest management in the marketplace through an FSC label. Forestry certification programs provide forest owner groups with a means to assure responsible forest management for their members. The Community Forestry Resource Center has been collaborating with forestry cooperatives and landowner associations in North America since 1998 to develop resources and infrastructure to help facilitate their healthy development and to help their members access FSC certification. CFRC offers information and assistance in the following areas: Organizational development, technical assistance and forest management and certification.

An Integrated Approach towards Trade, Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development.
By
Salvano Briceno
Many developing countries are endowed with highly rich and diverse biological resources. These resources provide a wide range of products and services, such as watershed protection, carbon sequestration, eco-tourism, products derived from bioprospecting, intermediate products (e. g. natural dyes, colorants, oils, biochemical compounds, medicinal extracts) and final products (e. g. timber, handicrafts, nuts, fruits, perfumes, medicines). Many products are collected for subsistence use. Some products have served as an important source of innovation for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, cosmetic or agrochemical industries. Countries rich in natural resources and biodiversity are witnessing high deforestation rates and loss of biodiversity. Impoverished populations searching for short-term economic gain tends to cause environmentally harmful behavior. Well-known examples of such behavior are unsustainable slash-and-burn practices, excessive commercial logging, and clearing of natural habitats for agriculture and urban expansion. To reverse the above process, biodiversity should be used sustainably in development practices. Potential economic value for biodiversity should translate into economic benefits. One way to achieve this is by taking advantage of the new investment and trade opportunities emerging for biodiversity-based products and services. Interest for these products is on the rise because of the industry search for recyclable products, the globally emerging biotechnology industry, and shifts in consumer behavior in industrialized countries and urban areas of developing countries.

Take a big step toward a career in forestry
Junior Forest Rangers (JFR), now in its 38th year, is a work/education summer program. High-school students aged 16-18 can learn about environmentally sound forest management techniques and career options. A balance of work, field tours and presentations helps participants understand how the government and forest industry face the complex challenges of forest resource management. A crew may be located anywhere in Alberta and work on various projects from tree planting and trail building, to fire-hazard reduction. Crewmembers receive training in equipment use and maintenance including chainsaws. They participate in field tours and presentations while learning directly from practicing foresters. Crewmembers are paid $30 per day (Monday through Friday), regardless of whether on a work or educational day. Meals, transportation and tent accommodation are provided free-of-charge. Students seeking credit for their JFR experience are encouraged to make arrangements with their schools prior to the program. Before applying, recognize that the rewards of the program are accompanied by challenges:

International concerns about sustainable development were given expression through the 'Earth Summit' in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and were debated again at the WSSD held in Johannesburg in 2002. Forestry was an important topic at Johannesburg and the UK was able to demonstrate that it is among the leaders in developing and implementing standards for sustainable forestry. sustainableforestry@forestry.gsi.gov.uk
