ZIL's Annual Conference 2004
The ZIL annual conference on "Food security for better health in developing countries" will take place on 11 June 2004 details The Swiss Centre for International Agriculture (ZIL) is an association based at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich established in 1993. ZIL's mission is to initiate, support, and coordinate collaborative research by its members and partners that will enable resource-poor farmers in low-income countries to achieve sustainable improvements of their livelihoods. This includes the mobilisation of Swiss research capacity and the promotion of awareness about the role of agricultural and food science in meeting the human and environmental challenges of low-income countries. The Centre has achieved national and international recognition as facilitator and convener of internationally relevant agricultural research in Switzerland. Its research focus over the last ten years has been on cassava, integrated pest management (IPM), legumes, and smallholder milk production and marketing. Its current programme is dedicated to "Livestock systems research in support of poor people". The results of the Centre's research have been documented in numerous publications, most in refereed scientific journals. ZIL has produced training materials and organised training workshops attended by many scientists and policy makers. The Centre continuosly supports PhD candidates in development relevant themes.

The Enhanced Forestry Program (EFP) contributes to sustainable harvest by making investments to grow higher quality second growth stands faster on lands available for timber production. These investments enhance the productivity of British Columbia's forests, while integrating social and environmental values. Activities funded to date include improved silviculture planning, incremental silviculture treatments, reforestation of backlog areas, and forest health treatments. Other investments in alternative silvicultural systems, habitat, biodiversity, and adaptive management contribute to social and environmental objectives as well as to timber production. The Ministry of Forests supports the EFP program by working with our partners to provide training, information, and tools to support more informed silviculture investment decisions. This Website contains reports, training materials, software tools, and other resources to assist in the cost-effective design, implementation and monitoring of EFP incremental silviculture and reforestation projects.

In January 2002 the SFB filed Articles of Incorporation to become a separate entity and obtained 501(c)3 nonprofit status. The "new" entity is called the Sustainable Forestry Board, Inc.
SFI®History
The SFI® program was launched in October of 1994 as a commitment by program participants to sustainable forest management under a rigorous system of principles, objectives, and measures of performance. In November of 1998 SFI added a verification program for those program participants wishing to confirm conformance to the Standard. Successful independent 3rd-party verification may lead to certification and use of an on-product label.

Welcome
The Forest Trust has been a consistent innovator in the field of sustainable forestry since its founding in 1984. The Trust views sustainable forestry as a fragile calculus between the natural systems of the Earth's ecology and those of the human economy. The central problem of sustainable forestry is to maintain the natural composition, structure and processes of forest ecosystems in the presence of human and natural disturbance. The Trust's programs deal with both the biological side of this problem and with the economic and social issues, since neither side can be approached in isolation. The Trust recognizes that sustainable forestry cannot be defined by fiat at the national level and that policy developed in distant urban centers frequently overlooks site-specific ecological realities. As a result, the Trust roots its programs in the field in the Southwest and has carried its learning and policy perspective into the national arena through two sponsored organizations: the Forest Stewards Guild and the National Network of Forest Practitioners.
