FORESTRY MEMO REVEALS WOODCHIP DRIVEN FOREST OPERATIONS
Sawlogs Woodchipped as Overcutting Admitted
The Tasmanian Greens today used Forestry Tasmania s own notice to logging contractors to grill the government over instructions which show that current logging operations are woodchip driven, that due to a glut of sawlogs certain categories of sawlog are no longer being segregated but are being woodchipped instead, and that peeler logs will also be woodchipped as of Friday this week.
Greens Opposition Leader and spokesperson on Forestry Peg Putt MHA pointed out the total inability of Forests Minister Lennon to justify the bombshell revelations which completely undermine his constant assertions that the industry is sawlog driven and which show massive overcutting of State forest under Forestry Tasmania.
Ms Putt observed that the Minister had not addressed any of the specific matters put to him but had instead betrayed the difficulty he was in by resorting to misconceived personal attacks and elaborate conspiracy theories, a sure measure of his degree of difficulty.

DEPARTMENT OF WATER AFFAIRS AND FORESTRY
MINISTER RONNIE KASRILS
PARLIAMENTARY MEDIA BRIEFING
19 SEPTEMBER 2000
INTRODUCTION
The week when Amagluglug triumphed over Brazil has also seen some successes in Water and Forestry.
As announced last week, the first part of our forestry restructuring has been successfully concluded and excellent prices were obtained, after tough negotiation. Certain critical sites have been removed for conservation and tourism purposes and tenders are already out for their development. These developments should now answer pessimistic comments that The National Water Act's controls on Forestry would render the forestry business unviable.
In this regard, if there was any doubt about the revolutionary importance of our water policy, I can simply mention that a senior delegation from the People's Republic of China led by a Vice Minister, is in the country to study our approach to Water Management and law reform.
The President's announcement at COSATU's conference yesterday that the basic water supply of 6000 litres per household per month would be provided free to the poor is a vital milestone. Clarity on this issue will allow us to achieve sustainability with equity bearing in mind that higher levels of consumption will have to be paid for.
Meanwhile, the Department's community water supply programme has now reached six million people; government's overall total is closer to ten million given improved water services provided by our housing programme. That is delivery.

This money is authorized under the Volunteer Fire Assistance Act, and the National Fire Plan, according to Robert Summerville, Rural Fire Protection Administrator. Arkansas State Forestry officials administer the program, which provides 50-50 cost-share grants to volunteer fire departments to purchase fire-fighting equipment. The purpose of this program is to train and equip local forces to prevent, control, and suppress fires in rural areas. State Forestry employees solicit cost-share grant proposals from fire departments that serve communities of 10,000 people or fewer, review the grant proposals, and consider statewide needs when determining awards. At least 50 percent of the funding for VFA cost-share grant projects must come from non-Federal sources (the Fire Department). The U.S. Forest Service provides the funding and oversight for the program. Applications from qualifying communities will be taken by Forestry Commission offices from June 1, 2004, to July 1, 2004. All grants will be given on a 50-50 matching basis. The grant money will be used primarily for the purchase of equipment, excluding vehicles and buildings.

October 21, 2002 Giant Slide above Seymour Arm caused by forestry raises
fears about more logging The B.C. government is currently in the process of gutting the forest practices code and handing forest management over to industry. These changes could have enormous implications for areas of the province like the Shuswap, where logging is moving on to steeper and steeper hillsides. Without adequate government oversight of forestry planning, Shuswap residents could face a future with more devastating landslides and erosion events.

Biodiversity
Mark Ashton Professor of Silviculture and Forest Ecology Mark Ashton studies the regeneration of natural tropical, temperate, and boreal forests and the use of such knowledge to restore forests in degraded areas. His recent work has taken him to the rain forests of Sri Lanka and Panama, the temperate deciduous forests of New England, and the boreal forests of Saskatchewan, Canada. In addition to studying the biological processes of forest recovery, Ashton has analyzed the financial aspects of restoration agroforesty systems and studied at the management of protected watersheds. Ashton is Director of School Forests at Yale.

Greens' Forestry Theatre "Protestors who have disrupted contractors and forest workers are pursuing media theatre," Managing Director of Forestry Tasmania, Evan Rolley, said today. "For the second week in a row, protestors have caused losses and costs to Forestry Tasmania and contractors in the Huon Valley. "This damage to contractor income and costs to Forestry Tasmania are all part of a planned strategy to disrupt operations and put political pressure on forestry workers. Mr Rolley said Forestry Tasmania had asked the Tasmania Police to move protestors on so that forest workers can go about their lawful work in an uninterrupted way. "The excuse used by the protestors for being in the area is false and baseless," he said. "Protestors have been told on three separate occasions that Forest Practices Plans for current harvesting are available at our local district office. "They can visit the office, receive a briefing and be provided with a copy of the plan. The protestors are not genuinely interested in forest plans; they are interested in political stunts." Mr Rolley said that if protestors are concerned about land use, they should direct their protests to the Parliament, where decisions on land use are made.

"No Forestry Tasmania workers are being required to attend the rally, it is entirely voluntary. At the same time, Forestry Tasmania does not believe its staff should have their pay docked in order to participate. "Forestry Tasmania is a Government Business Enterprise. Our people are paid from the sales of logs to our veneer, sawmill and pulpwood customers. No State government funds are being drawn upon for the rally." ENDS
