Now, more than ever, forestry workers in the Pacific Northwest are facing tough questions about issues that affect their lives, as well as their livelihoods‹questions from their neighbors, their friends, and even their kids. At the Second Biennial Conference on University Education in Natural Resources, we reported on plans to launch a three-pronged approach to educate forest workers in the

Joint media release with Senator Ian Macdonald
IPS 062/2002
The Commonwealth is calling for tenders to develop a National Indigenous Forestry Strategy, the Federal Ministers for Forestry and Conservation, Senator Ian Macdonald, and Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, Philip Ruddock, announced today. The deadline for applications is Thursday 5 December 2002. The strategy, which will be jointly funded by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia (AFFA), will help encourage greater involvement by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities in Australia's forest growing, timber processing and associated industries. The Ministers said that the strategy would boost the economic independence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the country, as well as benefiting Australia's forestry sector.

New research boosts dryland farm forestry
    24 May 1999
Australia’s Joint Venture Agroforestry Program (JVAP) has welcomed an injection of $760,000 into new research that will help develop farm forestry in the drier regions of southern Australia. Announced today by Federal Forestry and Conservation Minister Wilson Tuckey, the money will be used to build on current research identifying and developing species suitable for farm forestry in lower rainfall agricultural areas. These agricultural regions have been identified by the JVAP as potential growth areas for agroforestry, providing a sustainable and economic alternative to farmers with the right tree species and management techniques. Tree Improvement for Low Rainfall in Farm Forestry in Southern Australia will be a joint effort between state agencies in Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria, and the CSIRO. It will be managed by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) on behalf of the JVAP, which is a collaborative undertaking between RIRDC, Land and Water Resources Research and Development Corporation (LWRRDC), and Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Corporation (FWPRDC). Additional support is provided by the NHT and the Murray Darling Basin Commission. Other projects which will be undertaken this year include an evaluation of intrinsic wood quality within on-farm woodlots and commercial eucalypt hybrid plantings for marginal lands in northern Australia.

Expansion of farm forestry must be
    managed to benefit smaller communities

31 May 2001 The rapid expansion of farm forestry must be carefully managed to ensure regional communities are the beneficiaries of associated social and economic changes, according to a new report from the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC). The report, titled Socio-economic Impacts of Farm Forestry, states that at a broad regional level, farm plantation forestry has the capacity to offer important economic and employment benefits associated with servicing the industry and, in the longer term, downstream processing activities. However, it also found that while the regional impacts of farm plantation forestry can be positive, they can also mask negative economic and employment impacts at more local levels. The report recommends a number of important strategies to maximise socio-economic benefits and minimise any negative impacts of farm plantation forestry in rural communities. Recommendation 1: Federal and State government agencies should identify communities experiencing, or likely to experience, an expansion of farm plantation forestry. These agencies, together with local governments, should play a proactive role in assisting with long-term planning and development aimed at maximising the benefits.
