Forestry Management Philosophy
Sustainable forestry means managing timberlands and their various resources to meet the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It also means following a land stewardship ethic that integrates timber harvesting for useful products with conservation of soil, air, and maintenance of water quality and wildlife and fish habitat. Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)SM, which has been endorsed by major forest products companies in the United States. Those companies that subscribe to SFI’s principles agree to assure the sustainability of their lands and to meet forest management standards. Potlatch uses the best available technology to support its forest management. Potlatch's timberland operations in Arkansas, Idaho and Minnesota employ state-of-the-art Geographic Information Systems to track information about soils, terrain, waterways and other characteristics of the forest. Foresters use this information to plan forest management and harvests with full consideration for these other resources. Potlatch supports and follows Best Management Practices, or BMPs. Developed by professional foresters, environmentalists and others, these local guidelines outline the best ways to build roads, harvest trees and perform other on-the-ground forestry practices. For example, BMPs often require buffer zones along streams to protect water quality and describe road-building practices that minimize the impact on the forest.

Service provided CA image interpretation system for inventory of different tree species (olive, palm and citrus fruit).
Analysable input data:
- satellite or aerial photography images,
- digitised or digital maps, - land register data, and orchard terrain data where available. 1-2-Tree produces two types of report: - inventory mode for exhaustive data, - statistical mode for estimation. Caption: interpretation of a zone divided into 3 parcels Operating principles Targets After integration of input data: - The operator selects the orchard boundaries and starts the automatic counting system. This works on the pattern recognition principle. - The initial result can be corrected by manual input of trees not identified in the automatic mode.

West Windsor Master Plan
INTRODUCTION The Township of West Windsor has prepared this Community Forestry Plan for the purpose of formalizing the organization of past, current and future programs related to the community's street trees and woodland areas. Through the process of preparing this Plan, the Township was able to devise a clear, concise set of goals and objectives and to schedule the accomplishment of an action plan related to the objectives over the next five years. This Plan shows the commitment of the Township to trees, the landscape, and woodland preservation, and moves toward the goal of avoiding accidents and injuries, and obtaining liability protection for damage or injury, caused by trees. To some, the concept of an urban forest may appear something of an anomaly, and indeed, it stretches credulity to apply such a designation to the sparse greenery found in most of New Jersey's urban centers. In the case of urbanizing communities such as West Windsor, however, the situations somewhat more encouraging. Most, though not all, of our pre-urban forests are still intact, and efforts to preserve and expand them should be a prime objective of the community at large. -Ron Rogers, News Article

FORESTRY AND FORESTRY MANAGEMENT Forest Conservation at Work
The State Government has been actively advocating and practising conservation as early as the 1950s when it introduced the Forest Ordinance, National Parks Ordinance and Wildlife Protection Ordinance. For Sarawak, forest conservation is a commitment to ensure the sustainable supply of forest produces, maintenance of environmental quality and provision of suitable habitats for wildlife. Forest conservation also means the maintenance of a store house of genetic resources useful for the improvement of indigenous tree species, agricultural crops and livestocks. Protection of Wildlife and Plants
With the three ordinances in place, plants and animals found to be in an endangered state are protected by law. The provisions of the Wildlife Protection Ordinance provide stiff penalties for those found collecting and/or destroying parts or whole of the protected plant or animal species.

OUR MISSION The mission of the Forest Management Program includes objectives that can best be achieved through an intensive program of forest protection and timber harvesting activities. Less intensive management options will not meet all the objectives of the stated mission. The current forest conditions will be changed to result in a forest that is stocked with native species that are matched to their appropriate soil types. The process of harvesting and converting stands will result in a healthier, more diverse forest that will yield more water and more timber. The diversity of both species and age structure will improve the forest's resilience to natural disturbances and insect/disease infestations. THE STORY OF THE RED PINE The red pine is a fast growing tree native to northern Maine and the Lake States.
