PROJECT IDENTIFICATION Project Code: Title: Forestry Management and Industrial Use of Quillaja Trees Main Disciplines: Chemical Engineering, Agronomy, Forestry Engineering Area: Forestry
PROJECT DIRECTOR Name: Ricardo San Martín Gamboa Main Institution: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile Address: Av. Vicuña Mackenna 4860 Telephone: Fax: E-mail: sanmarti@ing.puc.cl
ABSTRACT The aim of the project is to develop the sustainable exploitation of the Chilean native tree Quillaja saponaria Mol. (quillay). The bark of the tree contains 4% triterpenoid saponins, that have been used for decades as natural foaming agents in beverages and cosmetics, preparation of photographic film, etc.
Each year 60,000, 30-50 year old trees, are felled and the bark is exported to the US, Europe and Japan. Since there are no commercial plantations, quillaja forests are rapidly disappearing with no benefits to the country. Exports of bark are US $ 4.0 millions, while the market value of finished products is US $ 12 millions.
Moreover, there are numerous new applications for quillaja saponins (e.g. adjuvants for human vaccines, feed additive, food emulsifier, immune protection for fish, etc.), that are limited by the amount of bark exported by Chile. With an adequate supply of saponins, the market could grow at least three times to US $ 30-40 million per year.

Legislation to formalise forestry management changes
Legislation to formalise changes to the way Victoria's forest are managed is due to be introduced into state Parliament this week. The acting Minister for Environment, Bob Cameron, says the Sustainable Forests Timber Bill provides the legislative backing for the new forest management body, Vicforest. He says it also provides for the separation of the environmental management of the forests from commercial timber operations. Mr Cameron says that in the past the Department of Sustainability and Environment managed both. "In the past that has caused a conflict, it has caused tension and what we want to do is separate that out so that the entire transaction is entirely transparent," he said. "We don't want to have the problem we had a couple of years ago when there was too much timber being taken out and the industry wasn't sustainable."

© Caterpillar Brasil Caterpillar: Supporting sustainable forestry management in Brazil Caterpillar and the Tropical Forest Foundation (TFF) are promoting the transfer of sustainable forestry techniques to Brazil through education, training and partnerships formed with local and international groups. The objective under this partnership was to show how the use of low impact work techniques and the appropriate technology can reduce damage and increase harvesting efficiency in tropical forests. It was also to co-operate in establishing sustainable exploration policies that guarantee the survival of economic activity while conserving tropical forests. TFF has become widely recognized for establishing demonstration models and training schools to show the advantages and teach the principles of sustainable forest management/Reduced-Impact Logging (RIL). In 2001, more than 450 participants completed training on how to apply RIL practices to logging operations. Since 1996, more than 1,000 people from logging companies, universities, and governmental agencies have been trained in Brazil in reduced-impact logging practices. FFT instructors also provide extension training by visiting forest communities, university and technical forestry schools, and forest industrial companies.

Forest Management
This option emphasizes the science-based management of forest lands, ecosystems and related natural resources to produce sustainable outputs of timber and other forest benefits. The forest management option prepares students for employment as professional foresters who find employment with land management agencies, timber and wood products companies, trade organizations and forestry consulting firms. Students in the forest management option obtain the measurement, assessment, valuation and decision making skills that are necessary for managing forest lands and ecosystems for multiple outputs in a sustainable manner. Forest management option students take the initial general education coursework and the forestry core group of courses. Coursework in the junior and senior years places an emphasis on timber management and how it relates to other natural resources and ecosystem values. By using a set of controlled electives, students may concentrate coursework in land management, wood products, business or marketing.

THE URBAN FOREST
The urban forest is the complex system of trees and smaller plants, wildlife, associated organisms, soil, water and air in and around our city. It is the trees along our streets and in our parks, the vegetation around our homes and businesses, and the plants in the natural areas throughout the city. The urban forest provides beauty and benefits to Portland residents. It provides improved air and water quality, savings from decreased heating and cooling costs and increased property resale values. The urban forest is vital to our efforts to restore fish and wildlife habitat. It provides countless opportunities for recreation and makes our neighborhoods more pleasing. It plays a significant role in the high quality of life that Portland residents enjoy. Some of the benefits of the urban forest can be measured. The energy saved, the water kept out of treatment plants, and the benefits of cleaner air can be quantified. It is estimated that one large residential tree produces $4,000 of net economic benefit over its first fifty years1 and increases residential resale values by 6 to 9%.2 The trees in the Portland metropolitan region save over $20 billion in storm water costs by eliminating the need for expensive treatment, as well as saving nearly $2 million annually in summer energy savings.3 Other benefits are less easily measured, but no less valuable. We use the urban forest for recreation and depend on it for spiritual renewal. The aesthetic and inspirational value of the hundreds of thousands of trees in Portland's urban forest is incalculable.

Forestry: Management
Current Situation
Mississippi has about 18.5 million acres of forestland, which amounts to about 62 percent of the state's land area. Almost 70 percent of this forestland is owned by private, nonindustrial landowners, with more than 150,000 people owning 20 acres or more of forestland. Each landowner may have a different set of forest management objectives, so management decisions should be tailored to the needs of the landowner as well as the objectives and capability of the land. Mississippi has highly productive forests because of good soils, a long growing season, and abundant rainfall. These highly productive forests, combined with recent increases in timber prices and a high percentage of private ownership, result in forestland ownership being a significant family asset. Mississippi's forests are funding children's college education, providing for people in their old age, and enabling a lifestyle many would not have had otherwise. A key to successful forest management is a written management plan in which landowners define their management objectives, inventory their current forest resources, and plan activities to accomplish objectives consistent with existing resources. The management plan, once developed, should be followed unless conditions warrant changes. Thus, a management plan is a "living" document that landowners are constantly developing, implementing, reviewing, and revising with appropriate professional advice.

afrol News, 4 July - A community forestry management project in Ghana has been financed with US$ 9 million. The project's objective is to rehabilitate the degraded forest reserves, increase production of agricultural, wood and non-wood forestry products and strengthen institutional capacity. The African Development Bank (ADB) yesterday said it had approved a loan to finance the community forestry management project. The project had been conceived in the context of the Natural Resources Management Programme prepared by the Government to serve as a vehicle for implementing the Forestry Development Master Plan, which was launched in 1999 by the government with support from donors. It was to "involve the integrated management of forests, assist the beneficiaries to have sustainable livelihoods, enhance training for staff of the Forestry Services and strengthen the institutional capacity of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture," ADB says. The project further was to contribute to poverty reduction through the sustainable development of forest resources and maintenance of environmental quality. Increased availability of land to the farming communities would "lead to the creation of new employments and generate more important for the disadvantaged people."
