NEW: I have recently completed writing a book on the closely related topic of the sustainable management of two small rimu forests in South Westland, Okarito and Saltwater, near the little settlement of Okarito. After ten years of very succesful and world-renowned operation, his work was stopped by the NZ Labour government. You may find out about that book here This is the Table of Contents of my pages on the beech forest topic.

Forest Stewardship funds available
Through shared information, technology, and understanding, we empower others and ourselves to: sustain and enhance functioning forest ecosystems; provide a sustainable supply of forest resources to meet human needs (e.g., material, economic, and social); protect lives and property from wildfires; and provide a dollar return to the permanent school trust. The Division of Forestry exists to provide a long-term, sustainable yield of forest resources from state forest lands; improve the health and productivity of other public and private forest lands (including community forest lands); and protect life, property, and natural resources from wildfires. This is primarily accomplished through three core programs: fire management, state land management, and cooperative forest management. Through the efforts of the Division of Forestry, Minnesota's citizens can rely on

Sustainability and Biodiversity for the World's Forests: Getting the Science Right
A Forum Commemorating the Tenth Anniversary of MeadWestvaco's Wildlife and Ecosystem Research Forest
Graceland Inn and Conference Center, Davis and Elkins College Elkins, West Virginia Tuesday June 15th, 2004 MeadWestvaco Chairman and CEO, John Luke Jr., and a distinguished panel of speakers will assemble in Elkins West Virginia to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of the MeadWestvaco Wildlife and Ecosystem Research Forest. Mr. Luke dedicated this unique Research Forest in June 1994 in Randolph County. The Forest has been an extremely active outdoor laboratory that has developed an aggressive and comprehensive research program. It is unique in that it is privately owned and is in a working forest setting. As such it has proven to be an excellent platform on which to build a sound scientific understanding of the complexities of managed forest systems, particularly as that relates to disturbance ecology and landscape ecology. More importantly, it is a compelling model for integrating academic, public and private sector assets in effectively achieving a widely shared goal, that of understanding forested ecosystems and ensuring their sustainability, particularly as it relates to biodiversity. The Elkins forum brings together nationally and internationally recognized leaders in conservation and forest science both to celebrate the accomplishments of the MeadWestvaco Wildlife and Ecosystem Research Forest through its first decade, and to look to the future of sustainability and biodiversity of the world's forests. The Forum will explore the contributions of this Forest in the broader context of how sustainability, particularly as it relates to our shared heritage of biodiversity, can be realized and extended well beyond the borders of this particular forest to impact the world's forests.
