We began life as the Forest Branch of the Department of Agriculture and Science and became a fully fledged independent Forestry Department in 1942. For a brief period during the late 1980s and early 1990s, we were called the Forestry and Soil Conservation Department but through all these changes our mandate remained unchanged and is now entrenched in our Mission Statement "To provide efficient technical and professional leadership in the conservation, protection, management and development of the forest resources of Jamaica"
    To commemorate 65 years of service in conserving Jamaica's "wood and water", the Forestry Department organised a series of events during 2003 to mark this occasion.

    Forestry Facts: An Overview Australia's forest industry, its employees, and the dependent communities want the public to know the facts about forests and forest products.
    The industry is open and visible, and has been under very close scrutiny for many years. Recently, such examination has included the most comprehensive independent study-ever the Resource Assessment Commission (RAC) "Forest and Timber Inquiry" (1992). Governments have also examined forests and forest industries in the Ecological Sustainable Development Forest Report (1991), and the National Plantation Advisory Committee Report (1991).
    The National Forest Policy Statement signed in 1992 is the joint response of the federal government and the state and territory governments to the three major reports on forest issues. The Commonwealth Government and State Governments in Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland have entered into a number of Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs) between 1997 and 2001 that provide a framework for forest management and the implementation of the National Forest Policy Statement.
    RFAs apply for up to 20 years and have three main objectives:
  • to protect environmental values in a Comprehensive, Adequate and Representative (CAR) Reserve System based on nationally agreed criteria;
  • 58. Social Forestry

This concept of village forests to meet the needs of the rural people is not new. It has existed through the centuries all over the country but it was now given a new character. This need for a social forestry scheme was felt as India has a dominant rural population that still depends largely on fuelwood and other biomass for their cooking and heating. This demand for fuel wood will not come down but the area under forest will reduce further due to the growing population and increasing human activities. Yet The government managed the projects for five years then gave them over to the village panchayats (village council) to manage for themselves and generate products or revenue as they saw fit. Social forestry scheme can be categorized into groups : farm forestry, community forestry, extension forestry and agro-forestry.
