The importance of the urban forest has long been recognised through the many benefits it brings to town and city life. The establishment, management and regeneration of this urban tree and woodland resource have been identified as government priorities in several different policy documents. Although the benefits of the urban forest have been recognised for many years, the concept of its sustainable management and urban forestry as a profession is relatively recent. As such, specific qualifications in urban forestry have been extremely limited to date.

Community Forestry: Principles and Practices Today
7 - 25 June 2004 Why this course ? Over the last two decades, the interdependent linkages between forest resource management policy and the livelihoods of rural people who depend on forest resources have been widely recognized. Experience gained during this period has shown that effective forest management strategies can and do involve local communities at all levels of the decision-making process. Today, community forestry has become a mainstream component of many national forestry programs. However, several countries that have introduced community forestry concepts are still struggling with the complex challenges of adapting their forestry programs to be more responsive and relevant to the needs and interests of communities. To address common issues faced at this stage of development, RECOFTC has designed an intensive 20-day introductory course to enable participants identify and analyze key community forestry concepts, strategies and principles. Sharing of experiences among the diverse group of participants will broaden personal perspectives on community-based forest management. In addition, a 5-day field trip will enhance the understanding of the relationship between people and forest, and increase exposure to real-life implementation issues on the ground. Through this course, participants will gain confidence and skills needed to support local institutions in devolving forest management in their home country effectively.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS Master's International Program
The Department of Forestry offers the opportunity to enter a graduate program through the MI (Master's International) Program within its professional masters degree (MNR and MF) and master of science degree (MS) programs. This option allows student to combine a Peace Corps assignment with a masters degree program. Students should apply to both Peace Corps and the Department of Forestry. Once admitted, they take courses for two semesters before entering the Peace Corps. MI students are most likely to receive volunteer assignments in forestry, especially agroforestry, and in natural resource management with an emphasis on enviromental education. Upon completion of their assignment, students return to the Department to complete their course work and present their departmental seminars.
There are two independent study courses (3 credits each) associated with preparing for and analyzing the Peace Corps experience. Otherwise, MI students follow the same rigorous curriculum as other masters students, with the added benefits of international field experience and a professional paper or thesis based on that experience.
Faculty advisory committees will assist students to choose courses which both meet the requirements of their degree programs and prepare them for their Peace Corps assignments. Students may audit language courses in addition to their regular curriculum. The Peace Corps assignment fulfills any requirement for an internship and may fulfill the requirement to serve as a teaching assistant.
