Wageningen foresters help set up international forestry courses throughout Europe
The SILVA Network, led by Wageningen foresters, is helping foster close cooperation between European universities, both for education and research. Wageningen staff give lectures in Spain and Sweden, and students from all over Europe will be able to follow international lectures through the Internet in the near future. The Virtual Forestry Academy is the newest plan to emerge from the network of foresters. The idea is to enable the different areas of expertise of the more than thirty university forestry departments in Europe to be utilised more efficiently. "Courses will be created for students from all over Europe, in which the introductory and concluding sessions are given in person by a lecturer, and the middle part takes place through e-mail and the Internet. It's still early days, but the SILVA Network makes this kind of experiment possible," says Professor Frits Mohren, chair of the Forest Ecology and Forest Management group at Wageningen University. The SILVA Network (European Forest Science Academic Network) was set up in 1989, as the result of an Erasmus exchange programme, at the initiative of a number of university lecturers including Dr Pieter Schmidt at Wageningen University. He was chair of the network until 1997.

Forestry Major
Geology Major Natural Resources Major A study of forest ecosystems and the environmental components and processes (biological, physical, and chemical) that affect them. Forestry majors at Sewanee will integrate traditional forestry courses (such as dendrology, silviculture, biometrics, forest ecology, and natural resource management) with a wide-ranging number of courses outside the department, including economics, biology, statistics, chemistry, and mathematics. Courses in geology, soils, hydrology, tropical and boreal forestry, wildlife management, and natural resource policy are also encouraged or required. Altogether, a total of nine full department courses, plus the junior presentations and senior project seminars, are required, as shown in the table below. A summer internship in a forestry-related field is strongly recommended. Forestry majors also may participate in a 3-2 program with Duke University, taking three years of work at Sewanee and two years at Duke, culminating in both a Sewanee's Bachelor's degree and a Duke Master's degree. Forestry Courses: 121. Introduction to Forestry
This introduction to the science and study of forestry includes tree structure and function, forest types of North America, forest biology and ecology, silviculture, forest management, forest products, wood properties, and U.S. forest policy. Lecture, three hours, laboratory and weekend field trips. (Credit, full course.) Staff ( Kuers Smith , Torreano). Natural Resource Issues and Policies An overview of the contemporary use of renewable and nonrenewable natural resources; physical, economic, social, and environmental factors, policies and legislation affecting their use. (Credit, full course.) Smith 204. Forest Wildlife Management A survey and analysis of how vertebrate animals affect forest processes, with particular emphasis on forest regeneration on the Cumberland Plateau. This discussion-oriented class will also address the history and current status of U.S. and international wildlife management, and the effects of forest management on game and non-game species. Students will interact with wildlife management professionals in Tennessee and will design and implement a field study to quantify the effects of vertebrate animals on forest growth and development. Fall of even-numbered years. (Credit, full course.). Ken Smith. Dendrology Explores the biology and morphology of trees, with emphasis on the major forest species of North America and selected forest types elsewhere in the world. Primary focus is on the ecophysiological characteristics of species and their roles in forest succession, distribution across the landscape, and response to disturbance and environmental stress. Includes field identification of native trees and shrubs of the Southeast. Lecture, three hours; laboratory and weekend field trips. (Credit, full course.) Kuers.

Maryland Forests "Careers in Forestry at Allegany College of Maryland" by Patrice Jastrzembski Many dream their whole lives of being a forester. For most, the desire remains just a dream. But with perseverance, training, and study, the dream can become reality. Some of the finest foresters around received their training, college degree, and employment right here in Maryland! The number of colleges and universities that offer a forestry curriculum is limited. In fact, there are only 21 such institutions in North America. Luckily for the citizens of Maryland there is an excellent forestry technology program at Allegany College of Maryland (formally known as Allegany Community College). Allegany College of Maryland's main campus is in Cumberland, Maryland, with a student body of just over 2,500. Approximately thirty new students enroll in its forestry curriculum each year. The Maryland Forests Association is a member of the ACM Forestry Advisory Board and enthusiastically endorses its programs. Forestry students at Allegany College of Maryland may choose one of two program options. The first, and most popular program, is the Forest Technology Program. This program is designed to take two years to complete. Students graduate with an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree.

Undergraduate Forestry

If you are interested in the natural world, love the outdoors, care about our wildlife and our forest resources, the forestry program at Northern Arizona University is an excellent place to further your education. NAU offers a program not duplicated anywhere in the United States and is nationally regarded for its unique approach to undergraduate education. The School is deeply committed to further understanding and protecting the environment, and its integrated, multidisciplinary approach prepares you for a broad range of careers. What's more, Northern Arizona University's unique program is offered in one of the most beautiful places in the country. Just over an hour's drive from the Grand Canyon and surrounded by the largest continuous ponderosa pine forest in the world, Flagstaff and the NAU campus are nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks which rise to over 12,000 feet above sea level. Arizona itself is fascinating because of the diversity of its terrain: six climate zones ranging from desert to Alpine tundra, provide a rich and varied resource for scientific research as well as recreation.
The Forestry Curriculum
The undergraduate forestry program at NAU is accredited by the Society of American Foresters and is unlike any other forestry program in the country. It is unique because the junior and senior years of study focus on a holistic approach to the environment rather than isolated, specialty-oriented courses.

Our forests are a precious natural resource that need skillful management by trained people. Foresters must respond to a variety of ecological and societal demands as they manage forests, protect wildlife habitats, care for forest recreation areas, and improve our water resources. A major in forestry at UNH combines a basic education in social and natural sciences with professional forestry courses and courses in closely related disciplines. A major emphasis is placed on satisfying human needs and enhancing our lives by focusing on structure and function of forested ecosystems. As juniors, students choose between two options: Forest Management for students who want a career in managing forest resources, and Forest Science for those interested in biology, ecology, international forestry, or other areas of specialization. Forestry education at UNH uses access to 3800 acres of university woodlands for extensive field trips, as well as specialized indoor and outdoor laboratories. (Visit the UNH woodlands web site

Introduction
Forestry is a major export earner for New Zealand and with dairy and meat was one of the three most important export earners in 2000. But while earnings from dairy and meat are increasing slowly, export earnings from forestry are set to skyrocket over the next 10 to 20 years as the amount of wood available for harvest rapidly increases.
Forestry is likely to become the single biggest export earner for New Zealand within the next few years. Forestry is, however, more than just growing trees, and covers the full range of activites from growing trees, through harvesting and processing to marketing. It applies to both native and plantation forests, and is about people as much as the forests. Unifying all of these is a need for graduates who have good management skills, are quantitatively competent, and are able to tackle a diverse range of problems with imagination and innovation.
