Natural Resources - Forestry
Start Date: September/January Length: Credential: Location: Strait Area Campus
Program Description
The Natural Resources- Forestry (Certificate and Diploma) model reflects a new level of flexibility for the College. It allows individuals who have not yet completed high school to access college core courses and provides an industry-mandated base of skills and knowledge upon which individuals can build. The model allows and recognizes education and training, which individuals and employers deem of value. Study at the Diploma level may take many forms such as other core courses, prior learning experiences, customized offerings and courses delivered by agencies outside of the College. The flexibility of this model allows those enrolled in programs to participate in courses that fit the individuals' goals, schedules and means. An individual may choose to participate as a full time student or take a few courses a year (perhaps during a down time), or to take semester sized blocks on a full time basis over the period of several years. Part time, off campus, distance and directed study all can be integrated into the students program. This will be an open ended, ongoing process, which maintains a close relationship with our industry partners. This new program offers the graduate a broad range of employment opportunities in the field of Forestry and related activities. Graduates of the certificate program will have a package of job entry skills that are offered after extensive consultation with industry. Completion of the certificate opens the door to go on to complete a diploma in an area of specialization (see Diploma Program Outline). Diploma courses may be taken before completion of the certificate but certificate completion is required before the diploma is awarded.

Significant Points
  • Nearly two-thirds of salaried conservation scientists and foresters work for Federal, State, or local governments.
  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry, range management, or a related discipline is the minimum educational requirement.
  • Slower-than-average job growth is projected because of limited growth in government and in forestry and logging; most employment opportunities will be in private sector consulting.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Forests and rangelands supply wood products, livestock forage, minerals, and water; serve as sites for recreational activities; and provide habitats for wildlife. Conservation scientists and foresters manage, develop, use, and help to protect these and other natural resources. Foresters Throughout the forest management and procurement processes, foresters consider the economics as well as the environmental impact on natural resources. To do this, they determine how to conserve wildlife habitats, creek beds, water quality, and soil stability, and how best to comply with environmental regulations. Foresters must balance the desire to conserve forested ecosystems for future generations with the need to use forest resources for recreational or economic purposes.

The undergraduate forestry curriculum is built on a core of selected forestry courses that meet the requirements of the Society of American Foresters, and the need of the student to understand the application of forestry to a broad range of resource management situations. Natural and physical sciences, mathematics, wildlife, water, and soils courses are prerequisites for advanced forestry courses. The integration and application of these courses to forestry is an educational concept supported by the forestry faculty. The five emphases within the forestry curriculum allow you to select course options that match your career goals.
Many forestry students supplement their major emphasis with a minor. There are many minors to select from, and you should work closely with your professor/advisor to select the one that would be the most appropriate for your career goals. For example, the growing demand for forestry consultants in the Third World recently prompted the development of a minor in International Resource Management which includes significant forestry components. The same need is being served by the new "Masters Internationalist" program, which combines graduate training with Peace Corps service in a three year program. This minor supplements many majors campus-wide.

General Information
Forestry is the science, art, and practice of managing and using the natural resources on forestlands. The major combines social, physical, and biological sciences to ensure informed management of forests and associated resources. What the Major is Like Foresters are frequently involved in managing timber, water, recreation, forage, and wildlife habitat. They also play an important role in improving the environment. In addition to managing the forest's many resources, some forestry professionals are involved in wood science and technologythat is, they study the physical and chemical properties of wood as an industrial raw material. These specialists are concerned with all aspects of the manufacture and sale of wood products, such as oriented strand board and wafer board, and with new techniques for manufacturing other composite products. Their jobs may involve developing new wood products or monitoring the manufacture of existing products. Undergraduate programs begin with general course work in English, mathematics, chemistry, physics, speech, and statistics. Basic forestry is usually studied in the freshman year. Because forestry is a diversified field, students have to choose one of several specialized areas. Introductory forestry courses and field studies conducted by forestry faculty provide information about these options. Once students have acquired this background, they begin course work in their chosen area. The decision on the specialty may come as early as the freshman year or as late as the end of the sophomore year.

The field of forestry is often described as a mix of science and art. Blending the needs and objectives of landowners and society with the characteristics and potential of our land is a complex endeavor. Forestry history in the South is rich and exciting and has led to one of the most ecologically diverse and economically important regions in the country. This course will provide an introduction to forest management in the South.
Anyone with an interest in forestry and forest management is invited to participate. The course will be especially useful for landowners and those who work with foresters and the forest industry. Others who will benefit include media professionals, attorneys, accountants, administrative support personnel, teachers, natural resource professionals, and real estate appraisers.
Full attendance mandatory to receive credit
The course will involve visits to a local forest and a sawmill (transportation will be provided). Protective headgear will be provided; however, outdoor clothing for these trips is recommended (sturdy shoes a must!).

The Forestry Program The common characteristic of foresters is the developed skill in managing forest resources for long-range needs. Wood is a valuable and renewable basic natural resource in America, supporting a forest-products industry that directly and indirectly accounts for nearly eight percent of America's economic activity. Today's increasing social concern for environmental values has given foresters the additional task of managing land to protect and enhance forest wildlife, forest beauty, and water quality. Professional forestry courses include instruction on the identification, geography, and characteristics of tree species (dendrology) and the nutrition, reproduction, growth requirements, and yields of forests (silviculture). Students apply sampling and measuring techniques during the summer camp session at the end of their sophomore year. In addition, courses provide necessary background on the formation and fertility of soils, the management of fish and wildlife, and the regulation of water yields and soil stability. Study of the economic aspects of producing timber, the administration and planning involved in logging and wood use, and the control of forest insect and disease problems round out the basic forestry curriculum.

8 HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION
8.1 Human resource development and employment
8.1.1 General status of human resources development in forestry
There is currently a wide variety in skills and employment conditions in the various sub-sectors, such as commercial large-scale industrial forestry, small-scale forestry activities and community forestry. The industrial forestry is the only sector where there is an adequate human resource development with a skilled labour force and competent training facilities. Apart from the industrial sector, the Government is the only institution where formally trained people in forestry are found. The University of Swaziland and a few NGOs have some people with expertise in forestry, which is limited and not comprehensive of all forest management aspects. In general, the overall human resource is not sufficient to cope with the multiple functions of forestry. In the other sub-sectors there is a general lack of skills and experience to deal with forestry issues, in particular in community forestry and management of the natural forest resources. Without appropriate knowledge and skills it is unrealistic to expect Government, communities and NGOs to be able to manage the forest resources in a sustainable manner. Training and education are necessary to empower all stakeholders, which requirements should be determined and prioritised by Government through a participatory process.

The Field The field of forestry is concerned with all aspects of the conservation and management of the forest vegetation that covers 40 percent of the earth's land surface. This is a challenging task, because forests provide benefits to society in two very different ways. Forest ecosystems are vital in providing wildlife habitat, protecting watersheds, providing wilderness and other forms of outdoor recreation opportunities, maintaining biodiversity of both plants and animals, and even controlling global climate. Forests also provide the raw materials for lumber, paper, and fuelwood, which are favored over many alternative materials because they are renewable resources. In fact, every year Americans use more wood by weight than all plastics, metals, and Portland cement combined. The challenge of forestry, then, is to plan for the harvest and regeneration of trees to provide these products, while still maintaining the environmental
