ATC Executive Addresses North Carolina Forestry Association Board
Oct. 9, 2000 The logging and forest products industries need to form an immediate coalition in Washington, D.C. to deal with their removal from the hours of service regulation, Fletcher R. Hall, executive director of the Agricultural Transporters Conference of the American Trucking Associations told the North Carolina Forestry Association on Oct. 4. During his comments at the association's annual board meeting in Greensboro, Hall addressed the proposed hours of service regulation promulgated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Since the logging and forestry products industries have been removed from the agricultural commodities definition, Hall urged industry leaders to take immediate action to ensure that these groups are reinstated in the proposed hours of service regulation. Through a coalition, the industries can devise the regulatory and legislative strategies required to accomplish the goal of having the logging and forest products industries included in any final regulation on hours of service issued by the FMCSA.

Farm forester responsibility President's Comment August I have recently finished reading Edward Rutherfurd's 'The Forest', a novel portraying life in England's New Forest from the time of William Rufus to the present day and based on many factual historical events. Whilst there are many stories within the book, the over-riding theme to me is that in spite of kings, governments and their collective bureaucrats, the people of the forest have a better handle on what should be done to manage it. Perhaps there is a message there somewhere for those who seemingly want to continuously interfere with what landowners are doing, and tying up the time of those who donate it to organisations such as ours. Executive work The Executive has been criticised from some quarters for expecting branches to do too much in the administration of the organisation. At the same time, individual members of the Executive are working hard and sometimes long hours on behalf of members just attempting to safeguard those same members' rights to manage the forests, both indigenous and exotic, on their own land. One of the issues before us over recent years has been the ongoing power line saga. It is now more than a little ironic to see that the major State Owned Enterprise embroiled in this has become a sponsor in the land care area. While we would never discourage members from applying for these grants, this sponsorship does raise some questions. At the recent Executive meeting, one of the subjects discussed was that of why branches were struggling to find people willing to take on positions of responsibility. This situation is certainly not unique to our organisation, as many clubs, associations, and representative organisations find themselves in a similar position. It is a worrying trend, however, and something that all members need to think hard about. We would also urge branches to think ahead and start identifying potential Executive members, as uncontested elections while often expressing confidence in the status quo, can also lead to apathy.

(ACF) was founded in 1948 to advance the professionalism, ethics, and interests of professional foresters whose primary work was consulting to the public. It's a means of determining, based on different criteria, the sustainability and environmental well-being of a forest and its lands. Increasing public awareness of environmental issues has kindled extensive public involvement in resource management decisions and policies. A key component of the response to public concerns in the 1990s was the development of programs by government agencies, nongovernment organizations, and industry or landowner associations to encourage and verify sustainable management of forest resources. Five voluntary programs now exist in the United States, each with a different method for assessing and certifying that forests are managed sustainably with environmentally responsible practices. Certification is usually based on a set of standards to which a landowner's management practices and systems are compared. The Florida Forestry Association's Forest Certification Task Force has researched the five certification programs and developed a comprehensive matrix to compare the components of the programs.
