The function of professional forestry associations
THERE IS NO DOUBT that trends in the development of economic and social conditions in the modern world lead to the formation of groups. Both the individual and the small concern with no outside backing feel incapable of solving problems. Private demands are of no avail in face of the complex structure which controls daily life, and the financial means at the disposal of a single individual are inadequate for the achievement of broadly-based schemes. On the other hand, when charged with the duty of carrying out some program or agreed policy, government departments are finding it increasingly difficult to gain the essential co-operation of the individual and generally approach a specialist association which can assist their efforts and even become the means of attaining their objectives. It is therefore not to be wondered at that many and varied associations concerned with problems connected with forests and forest industries have been and are increasingly being organized in countries where these problems are of some social and economic importance. These associations are coming to play an ever increasing part in the direction and development of national forest policy. A group only takes definite shape or becomes an association when all its members agree to adhere to its constitution. But what generally speaking is a forestry association and, in particular, what is a professional forestry association?

VI. Conclusion: forestry associations and forest policy
This essay may usefully be concluded by summarizing as follows: 1. in what way the forestry associations of the various types we have examined can assist the formulation and development of forest policies; 2. how they can be used to persuade the owners of public or private forest-land to apply those policies; 3. whether it will pay a government to encourage and facilitate the setting up of such associations. It must be noted that the different types of association are not equally valuable, for the extent to which they will further the aims of forest policy will depend upon their own particular objectives; an association is not necessarily a panacea for all the problems confronting forest policy; and the most diverse types of associations can equally achieve results in furthering the progress of forest policy.
Comparative values of various types of forestry associations
It is repeated with emphasis that it is probably impossible to give application to an appropriate forest policy. in a country where there is not at least one association composed of well-known citizens, and which is, furthermore, capable of creating a nation-wide public opinion in favor of forestry and of the conservation of natural resources in general. Sometimes, it is true, the association in question may itself have somewhat erroneous notions about conservation; but that is a minor drawback, capable of being put right. Where such associations already exist, they should be helped to grow and extend their activities; where they do not exist, their formation should be encouraged. Of all types of forestry associations, these are undoubtedly the ones which render the most widespread general service: spreading through the nation a real concept of forest values and an acceptance of the need of a certain forbearance whereby those values can be preserved and benefit the largest possible number of citizens.

Advanced > Future W hat are the plans for the future of the Canadian Forestry Association? The following lines were kindly written for us by the General Manager of the CFA, Dave Lemkay, describing the CFA's plans for the future. CANADIAN FORESTRY ASSOCIATION - 100 YEARS OF SERVICE The Canadian Forestry Association celebrated its centennial in fine fashion at the Forest Sustainability Beyond 2000 Conference in May, 2000 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The objectives of Canada's oldest conservation organization reflect today what was established 100 years earlier in the Spring of 1900. The CFA was formed to advocate and encourage judicious methods in dealing with Canada's forest, water and wildlife resources, to educate and awaken public interest by collecting and disseminating forestry information and to promote tree planting. A century later, the CFA continues a long-standing program of outreach to Canadian schools, orchestrates programs like Envirothon and Logging for Wildlife and special events related to National Forest Week and Forest Capital of Canada campaigns. These programs are made possible through sponsorship from government and industry and partnership with provincial forestry associations and others who share the vision of healthy forests and a healthy attitude toward wise use of Canada's forest resources.

National Forest Week is an annual event that gives people across Canada, who are concerned about our forests, an opportunity to tell their story to the public. It also gives all Canadians an opportunity to get to know their forests better, by taking part in activities like tree planting, forest tours, mall displays and many other special events. National Forest Week has been held since the 1920's, starting as Forest Fire Prevention Week and developing over the years to its present form. During that period its focus has expanded from prevention of forest fires in the early days to a broader look at many influences which can affect the forest and are affected by it. National Forest Week, as it has been known since 1967, focuses attention on the importance of managing Canada's forests to meet the needs of the future as well as those of the present. When is National Forest Week?

Private Forestry Associations Offer Many Benefits to Forest Landowners Virginia Forest Landowner Update Summer 1999 Volume 13, No. 3 One of the greatest challenges faced by new and veteran forest landowners alike is obtaining timely information on natural resource management issues. While the first place to turn for assistance is often your state government agencies, e.g., the Virginia Departments of Forestry, Game and Inland Fisheries, and Cooperative Extension, private forestry associations offer many benefits to forest landowners that state agencies do not. Most notable, all forestry associations work at the state and/or federal level to seek regulatory change for the benefit of forest landowners. Forestry associations also offer resources such as magazines and annual conferences that share up-to-date information on regulatory issues, timber and estate taxes, forest products marketing and other topics. Perhaps the most important benefit of private forestry associations is their close cooperation with state and federal natural resource agencies to provide quality education programs such as field days, bus tours, conferences, and short courses for forest landowners.
