Remote Sensing of Land/Forest Fires
Fire is traditionally used by the shifting cultivators and small-scale farmers as a tool for clearing land in the Southeast asian region. In recent years, fire has increasingly been used by large plantations to clear land and for conversion of forest into plantations and agricultural land. In time of drought, the fires may go out of control, resulting in severe damage to the forest and the surrounding region. The 1997/98 forest fire episode in Southeast Asia has attracted international attention. The fires which occurred primarily in the Sumatra and Borneo islands and aggravated by the drought due to the El Nino Southern Oscillation phenomenon, resulted in increased aerosol loading (smoke-haze) over the region. The economic damage resulting from the haze has been reported to be in the range of billions of dollars. Millions of hectares of land/forest have been burnt. The environmental impacts of the fires include the loss of biodiversity, loss of forests as carbon sinks and emission of greenhouse gases which may influence the global climatic systems. In response to this situation, daily fire monitoring operation of the region using full-resolution SPOT images has been carried out at CRISP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Singapore. CRISP has also acquired many SPOT, ERS and RADARSAT images of the areas affected by fires.

forest fires and Percolation. Blaze Applet. Will more or fewer fires burn across to the right side of the forest than before? Try it!
http://polymer.bu.edu/java/java/blaze/blaze.html
Forest Fires and Percolation
Blaze Applet Imagine a forest in which the trees were planted by scattering seeds randomly all over the ground. The trees are now full-grown, tall and green. Some trees stand alone; others are in clusters. The forest is peaceful on a quiet, windless day. Now imagine that all the trees along one edge of the forest are suddenly set on fire. As each tree burns, the fire spreads rapidly to the trees next to it. Every tree in the same cluster burns, as the fire spreads from each tree to its closest neighbors. But fire does not spread from one cluster to another, because it cannot jump across the space that separates clusters; there is no wind. If the trees are planted sparsely, with just a few trees scattered over a large area, chances are the fire will burn only a small number of trees and then die out; most of the forest will be safe. That's because sparsely planted trees, scattered randomly, tend to stand alone or in small clusters separated from one another. In contrast, suppose that the trees are planted very densely, with lots of trees crowded into a small area. Then the fire is likely to spread through nearly the entire forest. That's because densely planted trees, scattered randomly, tend to form large clusters. There may even be one large cluster that reaches from one side of the forest to the other. The trees in such a large cluster form a connected path that allows the fire to spread from tree to tree across the entire forest.

Years after the fire, the damage becomes clear
By Alex Kirby
BBC News Online environment correspondent Fires in the Amazon forest are killing more trees than anyone had realised, according to UK scientists. They say the fires have a delayed effect, with trees often dying two or three years after they were damaged. This, they say, could double present estimates of the amount of vegetation lost and carbon dioxide released. This could become more important in the future if climatic patterns change significantly. Carbon emissions during severe El Nino events could be equivalent to 10-12.5% of annual global carbon emissions from fossil fuels
The UEA scientists
The scientists, from the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, UK, report their findings in Ecology Letters. They inspected all standing woody stems of 10 centimetres diameter or more in seven plots measuring 10 by 250 metres spread across 32 square kilometres of forest in the central Brazilian Amazon.

Portugal battles forest fires
Portugal has seen fewer forest fires than usual this year LISBON, Portugal Strong westerly winds and high temperatures have sparked three forest fires in northern and central Portugal. An emergency services spokesman told Reuters on Monday that 345 firefighters were trying to quell the biggest of the fires in mountains near Guarda, a city about 300 km (185 miles) northeast of the capital Lisbon. Up to 225 firefighters backed by helicopters and tanker planes were also battling fires near the city of Viseu, about 60 km west of Guarda, and close to the town of Vila Real, about 360 km north of Lisbon. were supporting their efforts. The size of the fires and their causes were not immediately known. The spokesman reported no injuries, but Lusa news agency said two men near Viseu and two women in Guarda had suffered burns and were in hospital. A spokesman for the agriculture ministry's forestry service said 42,809 hectares of forest had been burned this year through September 2, well below the average of the prevous five years, in part because of a wet winter and a cool summer.

Forest fires cast pall over southeast Asia
Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers were shrouded in smog in the capital, Kualar Lumpur SINGAPORE Four southeast Asian nations are to meet in an attempt to combat a haze that has descended over the region from forest fires raging across Sumatra and Borneo. Pollution levels in the region have been driven to dangerously high levels by the fires that stem from slash-and-burn farming tactics that ruin the local environment and impact upon tourism, health and economies throughout the region. Environment officials from Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore will be keen to see how promised measures translate into concrete action and how Indonesia's neighbors may be called upon to help at the July 19 meeting in Jakarta. "We'll find out more when we meet them on 19th July. So far it's contact through letters," Loh Ah Tuan, a director at Singapore's Ministry of the Environment, told a news conference on Friday. "Our sense is that there is a commitment on their part to actually deal with the fires."

Russia lacks funds to contain rampant forest fires
A fireman battles the advancing flames July 7, 1999

Web posted at: 9:04 p.m. EDT (0104 GMT)
From Correspondent Steve Harrigan ELETROGORSK, Russia (CNN) A record heat wave has fueled more than 1,000 forest fires in the region around Moscow , with just one helicopter to track them down. "Every day, there's 30 new fires. That's every single day, and again and again," said pilot Albert Ignatiev. The flames are not always easy to spot because many fires are several feet underground, invisibly gnawing away at peat bogs. To fight the blazes, firefighters must douse everything in the area. With poor equipment, no roads and no money for gasoline, the biggest struggle for firefighters is merely reaching the scene.

Since fire is the rapid acquisition of oxygen, and since oxygen is a key indicator of life, fire on any planet would be an indicator of life on that planet. Most of the Earth's land has been scorched by fire at some time in the past. Although causing many a tragedy, fire is considered part of a natural ecosystem cycle . The year 2000 fire season in the continental United States has been one of the most active on record, burning an area similar in size to New Jersey . Canadian Fires
It happens every year. If it's spring in Canada, it's the beginning of forest-fire season. Just as the southern coastal states deal with hurricanes, and the U.S. plains contend with tornadoes, Canada copes with flooding and fights fires. It usually starts as early as April, with grass fires that scorch the landscape. Then the season moves into high gear with the first round of forest fires in May and June, with more to come in the summer drought months. By the time it's all over in September, 2,000 square kilometres will have burned in roughly 9,500 fires across the country. For those six months of the year, an entire industry comes alive. Provincial governments and Parks Canada hire and train hundreds of firefighters who spend the summer doing the annual battle with fire. They will spend long, hard hours fighting a stubborn blaze that will only get worse because of high winds. They will be transported to other provinces to reinforce firefighters worn down by a blaze that won't be controlled. Many are college and university students who need a job. Others are highly trained firefighters who have gone to school to learn the intricacies of fire behaviour and suppression.

INDEPTH: FORCES OF NATURE
Forest Fires
It usually starts as early as April, with grass fires that scorch the landscape. Then the season moves into high gear with the first round of forest fires in May and June, with more to come in the summer drought months. By the time it's all over in September, 2,000 square kilometres will have burned in roughly 8,000 fires across the country.
During those six months, an entire industry comes alive. Provincial governments and Parks Canada hire and train hundreds of firefighters who spend the summer doing the annual battle with fire.
They spend long, hard hours fighting stubborn blazes that will only get worse because of high winds. They will be transported to other provinces to reinforce firefighters worn down by a blaze that won't be controlled. Many are college and university students who need a job. Others are highly trained firefighters who have gone to school to learn the intricacies of fire behaviour and suppression.
The fire fight doesn't just happen on the ground. Canadians have become experts in battling blazes from the air with helicopters, rappel crews, water tankers (Bombardier assembles some of the most sought-after in the world - the 415s - at its assembly facility in North Bay, Ont.) and even satellite monitoring systems.

Unsettling Events
THE FOREST FIRE OF 1910.
Stan Cohen and Don Miller, The Big Burn, the Northwest's forest fire of 1910. Missoula, Montana: Pictorial Histories Publishing Company, 1978.
But regardless of what people thought, or feared, or guessed or didn't bother to think or fear or guess - 1910 was to be the year of what some termed the "big blowup," or the "big burn," or the "time when the mountains roared."
It was a series of 1,736 fires that ravaged three million acres' and killed eighty-five, possibly eighty-seven, people, particularly during August 20 and 21 - the two most grueling days of searing hell. And the undermanned, underequipped national forests did not help the situation. With abnormally low amounts of precipitation and soaring, high temperatures, disaster threatened imminently.
By 1910 the nation had made significant progress in its movement away from "frontier freebooting," a philosophy which had lead to the reckless and wholesale exploitation of natural resources - including America's forests. In 1891 Congress had authorized the withdrawal of forest reserves from the public domain, and in 1897 legislation had insured the proper care, protection, and management of the public forests.
