There are currently no resources being mobilized. The U.S. also continues to be at Level I. Synopsis: Prognosis: Table notes: "Modified response" describes those fires for which action is taken if there is a possible threat to communities, property or other significant values. If there is no danger, these fires are observed.
Prescribed burning is a land management tool used to reduce built-up fuels in forested areas. In addition to protecting neighborhoods and businesses, it also improves the health of ecosystems. Forest fires are a natural part of Canada's landscape and play an important role in maintaining and regenerating forests and grasslands. Current graphs: For comparison purposes, two graphs have been added showing the statistics for the top fires between 1970 and 2002 for number of fires and area burned.

Bush urges thinning to prevent forest fires
CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) President Bush Saturday said U.S. fire prevention strategy has been "shortsighted" and called for a greater emphasis on thinning and clearing of forest brush and trees to help prevent wildfires that have burnt the United States during this hot, dry summer. In his Saturday radio address, he said he is directing Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman and Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton to "speed up the process of thinning on public lands" and wants Congress to "pass legislation that will ensure that vital forest restoration projects are not tied up in courts forever." "As we work to put out the fires and bring relief to their victims, we also have a responsibility to prevent the devastation that can be caused by future fires," Bush said. "For too long, America's fire prevention strategy has been shortsighted." Reporting Forest Fires
British Columbia has over 95 million hectares of forests, or approximately one million square kilometres. There can be over forest fires throughout the province in an average year. Lightning accounts for approximately half of these fires and the other half is due to human activities. The Forest Service has many ways to locate and detect fires, including lightning locators, air patrols and lookout towers, but nearly one third of all fires are detected and reported by the general public. Every fire season in British Columbia the toll-free number for reporting forest fires ( or on most cellular networks) is displayed on road signs, on Ministry of Forests trucks and throughout the media. Wildfire reports to this number have resulted in immeasurable savings in property damage, forest resources and fire suppression dollars. What will happen if you see a fire that appears to be unattended, and call to report it? The more information you have and the better you can answer the following types of questions, the easier it is for the Fire Centres and fire crews to locate and action the fire. 1. An agent at the Provincial Forest Fire Reporting Centre (PFFRC) at Protection headquarters in Victoria will answer your call.

Daily Forest Fire Danger Report
The Forest Fire Danger Level for Saturday, June 05, 2004 is LOW This will be the last daily update until there is a significant change in the Fire Danger level. DEP will continue to monitor conditions on a daily basis but revert to a weekly update, usually every friday. Next scheduled update will be friday, June 11th,2004. The DEP's Forest Fire Control Office urges all who enjoy the use of Connecticut's parks, forests and open spaces, to use fires with caution and practice forest fire prevention tips especially during forest fire season. People need to obey local laws regarding open fires carefully dispose of hot charcoal , and completely extinguish smoking materials As Smokey Bear says "Only you can prevent wildfires!" Connecticut traditionally experiences high forest fire danger in the Spring from mid-March through May. DEP's Division of Forestry constantly monitors the danger of forest fire to help protect Connecticut's 1.8 million acres of forested land. Throughout the Spring forest fire season, DEP sends daily advisories on forest fire danger levels to DEP's state park forest field staff, municipalities, fire departments and the media. Forest fire danger levels are classified at low, moderate, high, very high or extreme. In an average year approximately 1,300 acres of Connecticut woodland are scorched by forest fires. If you have received a permit from your local Open Burning Official to burn brush on your property, the permit is not valid if the Forest Fire Danger is rated
