Forensic Science: Evidence, Clues and Investigation What happened? Who did what? How? Why? These are the questions police and prosecutors must answer to solve a crime and bring the criminal to justice. Sometimes the task is relatively easy. Other times it is monumentally difficult, like reconstructing a lost language from a single sentence of text. Fortunately, police and prosecutors have a powerful ally: science. By bringing to bear on the evidence knowledge from such disciplines as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, anthropology , and psychology, forensic scientists can help investigators crack even the toughest cases. Forensic Science takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the world of evidence collection and analysis. From tried-and-true investigatory tools like fingerprinting to the cutting edge of DNA profiling, from ballistics to bite marks, from reading stories in the activities of insects to reading the stories human bones tell, this book explains forensic science techniques in terms the layperson can understand. Throughout, actual cases show theory in action and remind us that what happens in the lab has profound consequences for the many people touched by crime ISBN 0-7910-4950-7

Forensic science
is the application of science to solve legal issues. It is a wide field, that includes many disciplines. I am a graduate student in the forensic science program at John Jay College and developed a senior elective for my students at Manhattan Center for Science and Math (MCSM) in the 96-97 academic year. The forensic science elective explored many topics: latent fingerprints, blood groups, blood spatter, DNA, ballistics, microscopy, pathology, among others. The students enjoyed the course and were highly motivated. Guest speakers included detectives from the NYPD ballistics lab and a homicide district attorney from Brooklyn. This page is for the Anthropology section of the course which took approximately 3 days of 40-minute periods. Return to Sample Lessons Contents

    • What is Forensic Anthropology?
Forensic anthropology is the application of the science of physical/biological anthropology to the legal process. The identification of skeletal, and other decomposed human remains is important for both legal and humanitarian reasons. Forensic anthropologists work to suggest the age, sex, ancestry, stature, and unique features of a decedent from the skeleton. (From the American Board of Forensic Anthropologists At MCSM we were fortunate to have 2 skeletons, which the students collected from the prep room and wheeled into the classroom each day. On the first day they made a dramatic entrance and a great motivational begining. The students had previously studied these skeletons in Biology class. They knew of the 206 bones and the functions and importance of the skeleton in human anatomy and physiology.

Answering these questions is what forensic science is all about. forensic science is the study of objects that relate to a crime.

Who took a bite out of the candy? Sticky fingers have been found on the broken aquarium glass. Wet footprints lead to the open window. What is that powdery substance next to the broken piggy bank? Answering these questions is what forensic science is all about. Forensic science is the study of objects that relate to a crime. The objects are evidence and analyzing the evidence is what forensic scientists do. They observe, classify, compare, use numbers, measure, predict, interpret data, and draw inferences. Scientists they are and crimes they solve. Learn how to be a crime solver by exploring the world of the forensic scientist. Before studying a crime scene we must practice the skills needed in analyzing evidence. After you have completed the skill building assignments, try solving the crime.

Raymond Murray first encountered forensic geology in 1973 when he was teaching geology at Rutgers University. An agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms walked into Murray's office with a bag of dirt, looking for answers. Since then, Murray has worked as a forensic geologist and, with then fellow Rutgers professor John Tedrow, in 1975 published the first textbook on the science, Forensic Geology . Murray served as vice president and professor of geology at the University of Montana from 1977 to 1996 and continues to work in forensic geology. His latest book " Evidence from the Earthforensic geology and criminal investigation" has been published by Mountain Press in May 2004.

I came to RIT as a student in 1961 and for over 35 years, the reason for me being and remaining here was the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences . At one time the School was part of the College of Graphic Arts and Photography but in 1987 or so CGAP was absorbed by a new college. The Photographic Science group decided to form their own center around that time and departed the organization. Now they are part of the College of Science. Then, in February 1998, a move started to again re-organize the School. The School of Photographic Arts and Sciences itself, a truly unique organization (much like Kodak , the Bauhaus or Life magazine) spawned from science, technology and the arts, was, in fact re-organized into smaller departments. A global photographic organization was fragmented into more commonplace subdivisions. In May 1999 the School's motion picture, video and animation components formed a separate, new, school. SPAS is the poorer for it much like when Photographic Science decided to follow their own star. It is no secret that this process of fragmentation of the qualities in the school that brought me here in the first place has been a personal disappointment but to my chagrin the university does not seem to have suffered much because of it.
