A Case of Murder
A Forensic Science Unit
Submitted by Thea Sinclair
St. Stephens High School
Catawba County Schools Table of Contents
Introduction The purpose of this unit is to expose high school biology students to the biology lab skills commonly used during a forensics investigation. Through this unit of study, students will acquire the lab skills of observation, microscopy, chromatography, and DNA gel electrophoresis (commonly referred to as DNA fingerprinting). They will also work in cooperative groups and prepare logical conclusions based on data. Students are commonly exposed to crime situations by the media, both of a fictional and real nature. However, the methodology used by law enforcement personnel is usually an enigma to these students. By becoming involved in a simulated crime scene, they will see how the biology lab skills they have already learned can be applied in a law enforcement career. This unit could be used in a high school biology class of any level. It also could be used in a chemistry, physical science or anatomy/physiology course. In a general biology course, it would be best to introduce this unit late in the first semester after the scientific method, cells, microscopy, DNA and genetics have been studied. The unit described here could be accomplished in four one-hour periods or three 90-minute classes.

MASTER AND Ph.D. IN FORENSIC SCIENCES
On this purpose, LEMFOS as the one and only institution giving master and PhD degrees in the field of Forensic Science in Turkey, is organized to three different departments, (Medical, Basic and Social Sciences) to enable students to explore a particular interest across several fields.
To reach an advanced level of preparation, a wide range of instructors from different professional careers like criminalists, latent fingerprint analysts, questioned document examiners, coroners, and academicians constitute the staff of the institute.
Program Flexibility
The regular full-time post-graduate program offered by the Department of Medical Sciences leads to a PhD degree in Forensic Sciences for specialized medical doctors and medical dentists.
The multidisciplinary degree programs offered by the Department of Basic Sciences provide an understanding of the integration of forensic science disciplines with the investigation of criminal activity, as well as a review of analytical methods, procedures, equipment and data used by forensic specialists. A broad based learning experience in multiple areas of forensic science with teaching and research emphasis in DNA technologies, population genetics and toxicology is aimed.
Chemists, biologists, pharmacists, and graduates of different fields of engineering are trained to use their acquired knowledge in the field of forensic sciences. C.S.I. -Crime Scene Investigation. From Jerry Bruckheimer , producer of such hits as Beverly Hills Cop Days Of Thunder The Rock , and Con Air , comes a great new crime show...Crime Scene Investigation. This CBS hit series is the top rated new drama of the 2000-2001 season, and the ratings for this second season are even higher! The show stars William Petersen as Gil Grissom, the head of the Las Vegas Crime Scene Investigation Unit, solving crimes from evidence most average people would never think exists. Petersen's Grissom is aided by actress Marg Helgenberger who plays Catherine Willows, George Eads as Nick Stokes, Gary Dourdan as Warrick Brown, and Jorja Fox as the new investigator Sara Sidle. The lengths investigators can go to to find the clues, and the technology that aids in the search for those clues is amazing, and because of that- this series is unstoppable excitement. Forensic Science is the application of scientific methods and analysis of scientific data to support the law enforcement community in the investigation, apprehension and prosecution or vindication of individuals involved in criminal activities. Students learn the theory and practice of forensic science, including: the nature and scope of the discipline; the application of forensic science to crime, police investigation, and the adjudication process; and the legal, ethical, natural science and laboratory skills required for forensic work. The B.S. in Forensic Science degree will provide students with a solid education preparing them for effective professional careers in forensic laboratories, police agencies, and/or to pursue graduate studies. Students also will be prepared to pursue advanced degrees in forensic science, law, allied health, and medicine, to name a few. Students will have a breadth of knowledge provided by a liberal arts approach to the discipline. They will be exposed to principles of controlled substance analysis, DNA analysis, trace evidence, firearm and toolmark examinations, latent prints, and legal issues. They will be able to scientifically analyze evidence and explain its meaning in a justice system setting.
