Title: Alleged forgery of sonography report leads to elective abortion of late 23 week-old fetus
Keywords: abortion rates, diaphyseal length, diaphyseal shrinkage, fetal remains, fetal viability, foot length, forensic anthropology, forensic pathology, forensic science, gestational age determination, late abortion, sonography report
Abstract: In this case report, a very obese young woman who claimed to be 17 gestational weeks into pregnancy, sought an elective abortion. Upon dilation and curettage, the doctor assessed the fetal remains to be nearly 26 gestational weeks. After contacting local authorities, who turned the case over to the Office of the Medical Examiner, the doctor determined that the woman had apparently forged her sonography report from the radiology clinic. She was thus able to obtain an abortion at more than 23 gestational weeks. While abortion laws vary from state to state, most doctors are reluctant to perform an abortion on a woman so far into term, since serious medical complications may arise and fetal viability must be considered. This case history may demonstrate the importance of independent confirmation of gestational age prior to such a procedure. Forensic Science Activities Fingerprinting Shoe Prints Lip Prints Handwriting analysis ... Chromatography Fingerprinting Have students read the handout Fingerprinting Background Information . Divide the class into groups of 4-5 students. Give each student a sheet where they can record their group's fingerprints. The easiest way to record fingerprints is to have students rub an area on a piece of paper with a pencil. The students then rub their fingers over the graphite on the paper. Next, apply a small piece of tape to the finger, lift and place the tape on the sheet of paper. You will then have a record of each student's fingerprints. You may also place the tape on a sheet of overhead projector film and then you can project the image of a fingerprint for the entire class to see. Make a copy of the fingerprinting record sheet for each group so that you may use it in this activity and future crimes. Choose one set of fingerprints to be those of the culprit in each case the students solve involving fingerprints. The case: Yesterday, someone put salt in the sugar bowl on the teacher's table in the lunchroom. Later in the day a large jar containing a mysterious white substance was found stashed behind the curtain on the stage. The substance was later determined to be salt. Upon investigation, a set of fingerprints was found on the jar. Your job is to examine the fingerprints and decide if anyone in your class is the culprit in this crime..

Forensic Science and Drug Monitoring
You are in: Forensic Science and Drug Monitoring Home Welcome Qualifications The Course ... Welcome to Forensic Science and Drug Monitoring Home Page The forensic scientist plays an important role in the community through the provision of expert evidence in courts of law. The outcome of many civil and criminal cases is influenced by scientific findings and their interpretation. As an expert witness, the forensic scientist must demonstrate professional knowledge and competence, as well as personal integrity. The scientist thus requires formal academic qualifications before embarking on a career in forensic science. Forensic science covers a wide range of disciplines, many of which are based on chemistry. As their career progresses, forensic scientists often develop specialisms, but a broad knowledge of forensic science is a prerequisite.

FOR MOST PEOPLE, "forensic science" means cops and fingerprints and DNA analysis. All of that is still true, but these days forensic science encompasses much more. Some "whodunits" are more complicated and can involve an international cast of characters. Forensic science now also is used to verify and monitor compliance with such international agreements as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Chemical Weapons Convention, and to learn whether a country is developing a clandestine nuclear weapons program.
The Laboratory's Forensic Science Center was established in 1991, and in its short life has become a leader in law enforcement, national security, defense, and intelligence applications. Using sophisticated analytical equipment, experts in organic, inorganic, and biological chemistry can determine the composition and often the source of the most minute samples of material. Lasers are also being used to "interrogate," or examine, a variety of materials.
What You See Is What You Get
By combining three technologies into a single systeman ion trap mass spectrometer for analysis, a high-powered microscope for viewing, and a laser for ionizing samplesthe Center has created something entirely new for forensic analysis: imaging laser-ablation mass spectroscopy. Conceived in 1994 and still being refined, this new process allows considerably more accuracy in analyzing samples than standard mass spectroscopy.
