INTRODUCTION
Forensic Science Project
Welcome to the Forensic Science Project. This website is designed to provide teachers with a hands on science unit based on forensic science. During this unit students will have opportunities to work individually and in groups, develop their scientific skills, and participate in a research project with data they collect being sent to the forensic entomology department at Simon Fraser University. There are 9 lessons in the unit with 1 or 2 exams that require the students to demonstrate their understanding of the lessons by solving a crime. For each lesson there is also a student work sheet. If you would like to participate in the project you will need a password (to access the assessment information) that can be obtained from the project background information section.

APU Home
APU Chemistry courses are taught by a team of experienced lecturers with a wide variety of interests and research activities. There are three main teaching laboratories and all students acquire experience of a wide range of analytical instrumentation. All of the Forensic Science courses at APU are designed to produce graduates who both understand the UK legal system and have a good grasp of the theoretical and practical skills in forensic and applied analytical science. Students are expected to be able to work effectively in a real-world forensic science context and also be able to undertake creative research in Forensic Science. Teamwork is emphasised at all levels throughout the course. A strong emphasis is placed on breadth of study and on the application of knowledge to practical solution of real problems. It is important to realise that the skills of the Forensic Scientist have an important part to play in many fields of interest other than those related to crime. Forensic aspects of archaeology, disaster analysis and relief, curation and restoration of art objects all feature to a greater or lesser extent in the course. APU's approach to Forensic Science is focused on the practical aspects of crime scene examination, including fingerprint development techniques, arson and vehicle crime and the analysis of drugs of abuse. It also concentrates on those analytical techniques, essentially involving DNA, the various forms of spectroscopy, chromatography and diverse methods of microscopy, that provide basic information about trace evidence from crime scenes. The acquisition and interpretation of this analytical evidence then needs to be placed in an appropriate legal framework that enables it to be reliably used as evidence in a Court of Law.

DNA evidence arguably has become the most well-known type of forensic evidence, probably because it can be uniquely identifying and because it is the genetic blueprint of the human body. For these reasons, DNA evidence has become a highly influential piece of the crime puzzle ( The Future of Forensic DNA Testing: Predictions of the Research and Development Working Group Although DNA cannot determine a motive for a crime, it can be an important part of any law enforcement investigation, particularly one in search of an all-important lead. For example, DNA evidence may place a particular individual at a crime scene (

UK forensic scientists to strike over pay
By Lucy Sherriff Published Tuesday 18th May 2004 14:21 GMT Unions representing the employees of the UK's Forensic Science Service (FSS) have called a one-day strike in protest over a below inflation rate pay increase. At the end of April 2004, Prospect, the union representing scientists in the FSS balloted members on the industrial action. Today, support staff, represented by Public and Commercial Services Union, backed the scientists and will join them in the walk-out on 2 June. PCS describes the strike as a last resort to raise awareness of the 1.125 per cent pay raise offer. In a statement , the PCS acknowledges that a strike will have an impact both on the finances of the FSS, and on the cases arriving for processing. It also stressed that members will still attend major crime scenes to "preserve and gather forensic evidence". "We have sought a negotiated settlement, but management seem happy rewarding staff for their hard work with a below inflation cost of living increase by pointing the finger of blame at the Treasury," he said. "This further underlines the farce of delegated pay and the need for a return to national pay bargaining for the civil service."
