EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION
orensic entomology is the interpretation of entomological evidence to help resolve a criminal investigation. Recently, the level of awareness of forensic entomology within the entomological community, especially in the United States, has increased. The insects that have been most extensively studied in relation to their forensic uses are the blowfliesmembers of the Calliphoridae fly familyin particular their larvae or maggots, because:
  • They are the insects most commonly associated with corpses. They colonise the body most rapidly after death and in greater numbers than most other insect groups.

Entomology is the study of Insects it also includes their cousins with jointed legs like spiders, mites, Collembola that are not insects but closely resemble them.
In agriculture that is where most of us know the insect better. Yes, the weevils in our granary, the army worm in our maize garden. In vegetable garden we find a diverse number of caterpillars damaging our vegetables. All the caterpillars you encounter are either young moth or butterflies.
This area that looks at insects of agriculture importance is referred to as Agriculture entomology.
Malawi needs not to ignore entomology especially being in the tropics where there area a lot insects.
Forensic entomology:
In an interesting recent case the absence of insects in a decomposing body, in a seemingly straightforward death scene, led to a killer's confession. In the murder room there was an open window when the body was found, the investigators’ first assumption was that the murderer had forced his way into the room through the window. It was the department’s forensic entomologist who pointed out that you couldn’t have a decomposing body without flies. This changed the whole course of the investigation. It was later discovered that the killer had a key, and had returned to "set the stage" by opening the window just prior to feigning discovery of the corpse. The insects thus had insufficient time to colonize the body because the window had been closed ever since the murder took place to the time of the false discovery. When confronted by this biological reality as pointed out by the forensic entomologist, the killer confessed.

  • Assignment: If we are to apply the idea of degradative succession to human uses, what are factors that can influence how the process occurs? Do these have ecological correlates to fields other than forensic entomology?
Believe it or not, crimes can be solved by applying the principles of ecological succession that we learned during our third module. Finite organic resources are subject to the processes of degradative succession in similar ways once the organism dies. These principles hold whether the organism is a tree, a piece of fruit, or a human body. Degradative succession is the process by which finite organic resources go from being in the form that the organism was in prior to death to the final stage of decomposition. Usually this process involves the consumption of the body by other organisms (bacteria, fungi, animals), and results in an end-point of indigestible material and available nutrients that seep into the soil via water leaching or digestion and excretion.

(604) 291 3589 (wk) 856 4058 (hm) 252 5785 (pager) Forensic (or medico-legal) entomology is the study of the insects associated with a human corpse in an effort to determine elapsed time since death . Insect evidence may also show that the body has been moved to a second site after death, or that the body has been disturbed at some time, either by animals, or by the killer returning to the scene of the crime. However, the primary purpose of forensic entomology today is to determine elapsed time since death. Forensic entomology was first reported to have been used in 13th Century China and was used sporadically in the 19th Century and the early part of the 20th Century, playing a part in some very major cases. However, in the last 20 years, forensic entomology has become more and more common in police investigations. In 1996, some of us developed the American Board of Forensic Entomology, a certification Board for Forensic Entomologists, similar to the Board certification available for forensic odontologists and forensic anthropologists. Most cases that involve a forensic entomologist are 72 h or more old, as up until this time, other forensic methods are equally or more accurate than the insect evidence. However, after three days, insect evidence is often the

Forensic entomology is the study of insects , applied to forensics . It deals with what insects lay eggs when and where, and in what order they appear in dead bodies. This can be helpful in determining the time and location of the death in question There are many types of insects that can be involved in forensic entomology, but the ones listed here are mostly necrophagous (corpse eating) and related to medicolegal (directly related to the crime, insects on the corpse) entomology. This is not a full list, but a general one. There are many variations due to climate, and many other insects that are necrophagous. Flies are often first on the scene. They prefer a moist corpse for the maggots to feed on, as such a corpse is easier for them to chew.

are generally found on the corpse when it is more decomposed. In drier conditions, the beetles can be replaced by moth flies Psychodidae.

Insects and Murder
I bet you never thought that insects could detectives and coroners of the world, but there are many examples of how insects have helped solve crimes. Some insects act as scavengers and decomposers, providing a service like the garbage man. As an example, can you recall a road-killed animal after about 2 or 3 days? Although maggots may not be beautiful, they help clean up environment and provide a valuable service by recycling nutrients. They can also provide valuable information to help solve crime. "The life cycle of blow flies [was] the key to our investigation of the body of a thirty-seven-year-old male, found by joggers in a swamp on windward side of Oahu. the corpse was infested with maggots of two species of blow fly. Our analysis of the larvae, compared with both laboratory-rearing data and results of decomposition studies, suggest the victim had been dead for roughly 120 hours. That conclusion was corroborated by information obtained independently by the Honolulu police: the victim had last been seen alive 123 hours before the discovery of he corpse, and he had failed to report to work 121 hours before his body was found. Our estimate helped place the victim in the company of the suspect, who was later convicted of the murder(Goff 1991) ." The major group of insects that feed on dead animals are flies and beetles. Forensic entomology is not just used in gruesome cases, it is the general use of insects and other arthropods in legal issues. It can include; urban arthropod pest issues, stored-product arthropod pest issues, and medical-legal issues.

Jeanine Tessmer The importance of entomology to legal investigations has been known for several hundred years, but it has been recognized as a separate specialty only for the last 20 years or so. Forensic entomology applies to any aspect of insect study that may aid in resolving a situation that goes through the legal system. This may range from insect parts found in food products to determining the time of death of a crime victim who goes undiscovered for several days.
With humans there are various methods of determining the time of death, such as rigor mortis and body temperature. But after 24 to 36 hours, these methods and others no longer give valid results. It is then that the services of the forensic entomologist become valuable.
Certain insects are highly attracted to dead and decomposing bodies, and their life cycles allow experts to determine the time of death. The insects most beneficial in this process are flies, specifically blowflies and flesh flies.
Familiarity with the biology and geographic distribution of these flies and the ability to identify specimens from all stages of the life cycle are what the forensic entomologist can bring to the investigation process. The time of death is established based on the known length of time for the flies to develop to that stage under a given set of conditions. Environmental factors (temperature, rainfall, kind of habitat and length of daylight hours) affect egg deposition and length of development.

Forensic Entomology: The Utility of Arthropods in Legal Investigations > Customer Review #1: Missing a "key" point...

While this book does address a variety of necessary topics and its overall praise is well-deserved there is a gap, which means there is still a need for a textbook in forensic entomology. For a book of this nature one would expect to be able to identify insects of forensic importance. The numerous color photos are nice to look at, but in most cases do not allow species determination at the adult level (dont even bother asking about immature idenitification!). Short species accounts are given, but much more valuable would have been the inclusion of keys (as in K. Smiths treatment of the European forensic fauna). Unfortunately this means that you have to buy another text in order to identify any specimens that you collect. You will likely have to go the Manual of Nearctic Diptera in order to identify genera of Calliphoridae, Muscidae, Phorids...
