Learning to teach in 200 foreign languages
From the Washington Times "The growing number of immigrants and U.S. citizens who are not fluent in English has teachers trying to figure out how they can teach subjects to children who may be having trouble understanding them. Currently, schools in Maryland and the District teach students who combined speak more than 200 foreign languages." This article takes a look at how non-ESL class teachers are dealing with the challenges of teaching to non-native speakers.

Foreign languages in Primary and Pre-School Education: Context and Outcomes
A summary
Foreign languages in Primary and Pre-School Education: Context and Outcomes
The main conclusions drawn from the research were that early language learning can have a very positive effect on pupils, in terms of language skills, positive attitudes to other languages and cultures and self-confidence. Nevertheless an early start doesn't in itself guarantee better results than a later one. For success to be possible, certain conditions in terms both of pedagogy and of resources must be created. In order to achieve those conditions, the group made the following recommendations.
RECOMMENDATIONS
1/ Research
Sufficient funding must be made available for research and innovation, throughout the development of early language learning initiatives, from the planning stage to the post-implementation stage. This research should focus on the results achieved, taking account of the context, and on direct observation of classroom situations.

Can Computers Teach Kids a Foreign Language?
Cathy Miranker
Q: It seems like computer software can teach kids so many thingswhat about foreign languages? A: Computer software alone cannot teach your kids to speak a foreign language. Experts agree that it takes a real live teacher who's a native speaker to do that. But some computer programs can help when kids are getting started with a new language. The best CD-ROMs for language learners provide fun, inventive ways to practice, and exposure to the sights and sounds of new words, new people, and new places. Suggestions for buying foreign language CD-ROMs Little kids Kids 7-12 My favorite software for giving little kids exposure to a foreign-language via computer is the well-known series of interactive storybooks from Living Books. The following titles all feature Spanish: Arthur's Birthday Arthur's Teacher Trouble The Berenstain Bears Get in a Fight Harry and the Haunted House Just Grandma and Me Little Monster at School The Tortoise and the Hare , and Sheila Rae the Brave Just Grandma and Me is also translated into Japanese.

It’s Easy to Teach Foreign Languages at Home How can you introduce your homeschooler to the world community while increasing his/her written and verbal communication skills? There’s only one answer: teach your child to speak and understand a new language. With a little preparation and the right tools, you don’t need to be fluent in a foreign language to t each it effectively. Here are some simple tips to help you get started:
  • Head to your local library to find foreign language picture books with pronunciations. Better yet, ask the audio-visual desk if they have books on tape so that your child can hear a native speaker.
  • Check out videos and movies with a bilingual approach... or, for more advanced students, subtitles.
  • Look in the newspaper for local events related to holidays around the world. Attending a Cinco de Mayo event for instance, is a great way to learn Mexican songs and activities.
  • Watch sports such as soccer on a foreign language television station and try to follow the commentary.
  • Plan an activity with a family from another part of the world. Ask that child and his/her parent to speak in their native language for the afternoon.

Abstract
The thesis is concerned with the contribution and incorporation of the teaching of culture into the foreign language classroom. More specifically, some consideration will be given to the why and how of teaching culture. It will be demonstrated that teaching a foreign language is not tantamount to giving a homily on syntactic structures or learning new vocabulary and expressions, but mainly incorporates, or should incorporate, some cultural elements, which are intertwined with language itself. Furthermore, an attempt will be made to incorporate culture into the classroom by means of considering some techniques and methods currently used. The main premise of the paper is that effective communication is more than a matter of language proficiency and that, apart from enhancing and enriching communicative competence, cultural competence can also lead to empathy and respect toward different cultures as well as promote objectivity and cultural perspicacity.

Why Teach English?
Becoming an English teacher will not only be a challenging and rewarding opportunity in itself, but also a means toward attaining other goals. It enables those who want more than a superficial tourist's view of a country to find work so they can settle in for a longer stay. Taking a Certificate course will also enable those interested in teaching as a career to get some first hand experience in the field before having to invest thousands of dollars in graduate school. If you choose to teach English overseas, you will also benefit from the fact that many companies and graduate schools tend to value international experience. People who have lived overseas are able to offer an international perspective and awareness that is often an asset both in the classroom and in the professional world. Whatever your ultimate career interests, the self-knowledge and cultural awareness gained by living and working in another part of the world will be invaluable to you in the long term. I speak English pretty well. Why do I need a certificate to get a job?

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is committed to training future teachers at every level. Students may earn licensure to teach a foreign language in secondary schools or they may add a foreign language endorsement for elementary school teaching. For more information on licensure requirements, contact Prof. Linda Quinn Allen (515-294-9014). Of interest to future foreign language educators is also the National Foreign Language Resource Center. The Center is committed to improving foreign language education in our nation's primary and secondary schools. Under the directorship of Dr. Marcia Rosenbusch, the Center provides professional development for K-12 foreign language teachers. For more information, visit their website Foreign Language Learning and Resource Center (FLLRC) The FLLRC offers a variety of tools for authentic language learning experiences. It functions as the primary site for students of foreign languages to study outside of their classroom. The FLLRC also serves as the instructional technology hub of the department, providing specialized media, computer carts, and technological support for all language classes. The FLLRC has seen many changes in recent years. Gone are the peg and hook days of analog audio, as nearly all of the audio for supplementary coursework exists in streaming digital format.
The lab now has 20 computer workstations and facilities for viewing multi-format VHS and multi-Region DVD for small groups. This year, our department's ability to deliver the most up-to-date level of instruction has received a fantastic boost with the new Cargill Foreign Languages Digitally Enhanced Classroom (the "deck") in Pearson 303.
