Gerald R. Ford
By Brett Did you know that Gerald Ford became the first person in U.S. history to serve as President but never be elected President or Vice President? His nickname was Mr. Nice Guy. Ford was born on July 14, 1913 in Omaha, Nebraska. When he was two years old he liked to play with his dog Spot. As a young boy he was a Boy Scout and continued all the way up to Eagle Scout. He married Elizabeth Anne Bloomer in 1948. They had 4 children, Michael, Jack, Steven and Suzan. A lot of people called Elizabeth Anne Ford, Betty Ford. Mrs. Ford was known for speaking her mind. She was forced to undergo radical surgery for breast cancer. In 1974 she said, "If I was First Lady I could talk about it candidly and without embarrassment many other people would be able to as well." Before he was President he was the star center of his school's football team. He played football at the University of Michigan. He turned down offers to play football for the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions. He was a football coach at Yale University where he went to law school. Ford joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific in World War II. Voters in Grand Rapids, Michigan nominated Ford to the House of Representatives in 1948. They reelected him every 2 years until Ford had served nearly 26 years. He was a Republican. In 1973, President Richard M. Nixon appointed Gerald Ford Vice President when Spiro T. Agnew resigned. Later on, when President Nixon resigned because he was going to be impeached, Ford became President. Ford appointed Nelson A. Rockefeller as Vice President. Ford's pardon of Nixon contributed to the low opinion people had for him. Ford's most famous action was his campaign

in full GERALD RUDOLPH FORD, JR., original name LESLIE LYNCH KING, JR. (b. July 14, 1913, Omaha, Neb., U.S.), 38th president of the United States (1974-77), who, as 40th vice president, succeeded to the presidency on the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon. While Ford was still an infant, his parents were divorced, and his mother moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., where she married Gerald R. Ford, Sr., who adopted the boy and gave him his name. Ford was a football star at the University of Michigan and received his law degree from Yale University in 1941. In 1948 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican and was reelected successively thereafter, becoming House minority leader in 1965. After the resignation of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, President Nixon, on Oct. 12, 1973, nominated Ford to fill the vacant vice-presidential post. He was sworn in on December 6, the first vice president to take office in the middle of an administration. Ford's succession to the presidency on Aug. 9, 1974, after Nixon's resignation, marked the first time in U.S. history that the holder of the presidential office had not been elected either as president or as vice president. On September 8 Ford granted a full pardon to Nixon "for all offenses against the United States" that he might have committed while in office. The pardon effectively squelched any criminal prosecutions that Nixon might have been liable to in connection with the

The Presidential Medal of Freedom The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award in the United States.
It was established by President Harry Truman in 1945 to honor service during WWII. President John F. Kennedy revived the medal and began the tradition of awarding the medal annually, on or near July 4. The award is awarded to several people annually. Unlike many other US awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom can be awarded to non-US citizens.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom recognizes individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, or to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."

Ford" on one side; reverse - "Republican Presidential Campaign 1976" with elephant logo, minted by Franklin Mint. Comes with plastic display holder and stand in original box. Nice. Gerald Ford: Original oil painting of President Gerald Ford, framed. Signed Ann Love. 20" x 24" (not particularly flattering and could almost be called "country art" but certainly vintage 1970s and undoubtedly unique). Gerald Ford: The August 1974 Presidential Inauguration Eyewitness Silver Medal. Gerald Ford. Limited edition proof by The Franklin Mint. In original box with standard. 1-1/2" diameter. This is not an official inaugural medal but came out at the time of Ford assuming the presidency. Not much of anything for this event. Gerald Ford: Gerald Ford pocketbook. May well win as one of the craziest items. Ladies plastic pocketbook, cloth-lined, pocket inside. The outside is a replica of a full sized TIME magazine with Gerald Ford on the cover. Item gives the appearance of bering a folded-over copy of TIME. Definitely unusual.

Instead of waiting for the draft, Ford wanted to join the Navy. His background as a coach and trainer made him a good candidate for instructor in the Navy's V-5 (aviation cadet) program. Ford received a commision as ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve on 13 April 1942. On 20 April, he reported for active duty to the V-5 instructor school at Annapolis, Maryland. After one month of training, he went to Navy Preflight School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he was one of 83 instructors and taught elementary seamanship, ordnance, gunnery, first aid, and military drill. In addition, he coached in all nine sports that were offered, but mostly in swimming, boxing and football. During the one year he was at the Preflight School, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade on 2 June 1942, and to Lieutenant on March 1943.
Applying for sea duty, Ford was sent in May 1943 to the pre-commissioning detachment for a new light aircraft carrier, USS

The Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center houses a small exhibit that explores the birth and political history of the thirty-eighth president of the United States. On July 14, 1913, Gerald R. Ford, the only Nebraska native to become president of the United States, was born in the King mansion, which then stood at the corner of Thirty-second Street and Woolworth Avenue. In 1974 Omaha businessman James M. Paxson purchased the Ford birthsite and developed it as a park. Paxson's philanthropic efforts continued with the purchase of adjoining properties where the Ford Conservation Center was constructed. Gerald R. Ford lived in Omaha for only sixteen days after he was born to Leslie King, Sr. and Dorothy Gardner, in July of 1913. The marriage between his parents lasted only sixteen months. His mother fled the unsuccessful marriage and returned to her family home in Michigan. In December of 1913 she obtained a divorce, and her son's ties to the King familyand to Nebraskawere severed. She remarried and her second husband adopted her small son as Gerald Rudoph Ford, Jr. The exhibit on President Ford's life reestablishes those ties to the state where he was born. The displays of historical artifacts, photographs, video material, and memorabilia trace the highlights of his illustrious career:

NOTES FOR THE CONSIDERATION OF THE IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH, VICE PRESIDENT RICHARD B. CHENEY, SECRETARY OF DEFENSE DONALD H. RUMSFELD, AND ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN DAVID ASHCROFT (Part 4 of 6) IMPEACHMENT HISTORY UNDER THE CONSTITUTION
A casual reading of the history of impeachment by the Congress might lead one to believe its use, contrary to its clear purpose, "had sunk in this country to the ouster of dreary little judges for squalid misconduct." It has been our good fortune not to have been confronted with the tyrannies of our own Kings and their attendants and forced to struggle for freedom from their despotism. Still the existence of the impeachment power in the Constitution has been present and raised publicly, often prominently, during the administration of every American president. In 1974, to aid the House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary in its consideration of possible grounds for the impeachment of President Nixon, C. Vann Woodward, distinguished professor of history at Yale University, serving as Editor and Director, with the assistance of fourteen prominent historians, compiled a 398 page "Authoritative History of Accusations of High Crimes and Misdemeanors from George Washington to Lyndon Johnson." Charges of misconduct and threats of impeachment against the President, or his civil officers are found in every Presidential administration. Most often the charges have involved corruption which was present in many and prominent in the administrations of Presidents Tyler, Buchanan, Grant and Harding. Sometimes they have involved personal misconduct. Some charges reflect "politics as usual" and are an abuse of the impeachment power itself seeking political advantage. But on many occasions the charges have claimed usurpation of power not delegated to the President, abuse of delegated Presidential power and serious criminal conduct destructive of constitutional government and the rule of law.

He said it himself: "I'm a Ford, not a Lincoln."
After the Watergate scandal and the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974, a Ford seemed to be just what the country needed a return to normalcy.
Gerald Rudolph Ford was sworn in as the 38th President of the United States on August 9, 1974, in the wake of Watergate. On that day, he said, "Our long national nightmare is over. Our constitution works. Our great republic is a government of laws and not of men."
One month later, on September 8, 1974, President Ford issued an unconditional pardon for Nixon. The widely unpopular decision brought a quick end to his honeymoon with the American public. Some experts say that Ford's credibility was so damaged that it crippled any chance for re-election in 1976 when Jimmy Carter defeated him. The loss ended Ford's political career, one that had lasted more than three decades.

Gerald Ford - Former US President On Aug. 9, 1974, Gerald Rudolph Ford (1913 - ) became the first vice president in American history to succeed to the nation's highest office because of the resignation of a president. Ford's rise to become the 38th president followed a long career in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he was liked and respected by his colleagues. His decency and integrity went far toward healing the wounds of Watergate. The new president tried to restore public confidence in the national leadership and in the institutions of government. His administration was one of the most open in years, and Ford sought to emphasize candor in his relationships with the public and the press.

Senator Akaka serves on the Armed Services, Energy and Natural Resources, Governmental Affairs (GAC), Veterans' Affairs, and Indian Affairs committees. He is also a member of the Select Committee on Ethics.
