Introduction
Manitoba has excellent soils and climate to grow high quality forage. The long growing days and cool nights results in forages with lower lignification than forages grown in southern climates. The high quality can result in excellent animal performance and sheep are excellent converters of forage to meat, wool and milk. Manitoba sheep producers have developed forage/livestock systems both extensive and intensive which make excellent use of the forage available.

: Forage Crops Extension Specialist (301) 405-1322 About 28% of Maryland's farmland is devoted to production of forage crops - 235,000 acres of hay crops, 70,000 acres of corn silage and 280,000 acres of pastureland in 2000. Hay ranks fourth in cash receipts for Maryland crops. Cash receipts for hay amounted to $21,870,000 in 2000. However, only a small percentage of the forages grown in Maryland reach the market place directly as hay or other forage; they are largely marketed through milk, meat, and other livestock products. As a result the total value of forage crops is difficult to assess. An indirect method of assessing the value of forage crops to meat, milk and wool production is to look at the contribution of forages in feeding programs.
  • About 65% of milk production costs are feed, and forages provide 63% of the feed consumed by dairy cows. About 85% of the cost of producing beef is feed, and forages make up 85% of the feed consumed by beef cattle.

Extension programs use a number of educational methods to assist producers with livestock and forage management. Demonstrations, field days, meetings, news articles, radio programs, newsletters, and clinics are just a few of the methods used to educate Arkansans. Youth livestock programs use sheep, beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine and horse projects to teach lifetime skills to Arkansas' youth. All of these programs are designed to provide livestock and forage producers with information while also investing in the future of Arkansas. Our goal is to provide research-based information through informal education to help improve the economic well-being and quality of life for Arkansans.

Forage crops are of great value in Arkansas, both economically and environmentally.
Forages supply the majority of the total feed requirements of most beef cattle operations and in many cases provide a significant part of the feed requirements for dairy animals in Arkansas. The most convenient and economical approach in utilizing forages is to develop a year-round grazing program. The degree to which this objective can be achieved is dependent on the adapted forage species, specific livestock enterprise, soil resource, geographic area of the state, managerial ability, time and money.
A number of Extension educational programs are available to producers with respect to forage production. These educational programs and activities include county forage educational demonstrations, county forage educational field days, producer educational meetings, news articles, radio programs, informational fact sheets, county hay contests, the Arkansas Grazing Management School, Focus Programs, Grassland Evaluation Contest and others.

Focus Program: Reducing Winter Feed Costs
Winter feeding is typically the largest expense of maintaining a breeding beef herd. Most producers rely on hay or purchased feed. The cost of stored feed is high compared to grazed forages. Elimination of hay feeding is not always practical, but the amount of hay required can be reduced on most farms. In many cases, winter feed expenses can be reduced with simple planning and management to develop available resources. In Arkansas, Extension Animal Science has developed a statewide demonstration program highlighting four practices to reduce winter feed costs. These practices include: Stockpiled Forages, Winter Annual Forages, Rotational Grazing, and Supplemental Feeding based on Hay Quality.

Introduction Mineral supplementation is an important and often expensive part of a good integrated manage ment program for beef cattle. Recent research at NCSU and elsewhere has improved the understand ing of mineral function, and the requirements of different ruminant animals. Despite this, supplemen tation recommendations are difficult because little is understood about levels of minerals present in the forages we produce in North Carolina. Many of our ideas about mineral supplementation come from research conducted in the western states. Supple ments that are designed for use in other areas of the country may not be the best for use in North Caro lina because of the great differences in our forages and feeding practices. To improve our mineral rec ommendations, efforts are underway to evaluate minerals levels in different areas of the state. This paper describes a study that evaluated winter forages on North Carolina beef farms in the winter of 1992-1993. Because little is known about how fertilization practices influence mineral levels in forages, samples were taken from well managed farms utilizing either conventional fertilization, or fertilization with poultry litter or municipal sludge. Materials and Methods During the winter of 1992-1993 (October to February), samples of forages were taken from 29 different sites on 16 farms in 12 different counties, primarily in the Piedmont. Fourteen of the samples were of stockpiled fescue, and 15 were of hay. Sixteen of the samples were produced with commer cial fertilizer (8 stockpiled fescue and 8 hay), and 13 were produced with poultry litter or sludge (6 stock piled fescue and 7 hay). The samples were analyzed by a commercial lab for the minerals of major impor tance including molybdenum (with the exception of selenium.) The mineral levels in the forages were compared to the requirements of an above average lactating cow to determine which minerals were most limiting. The level of each mineral in forages produced by the two different systems were com pared using one-way analysis of variance.

Crops that are raised for livestock feed are called forage . Most forage species are either grass (Graminae) or legumes (Leguminosae). Commonly, pastures have a mixture of both. Other forages include baled hay, silage, alfalfa pellets, and crops that have been harvested while they are immature. The VR on the left shows an alafalfa field being swathed. Importance of forage. Forage production helps to diversify the agricultural economy of the province. Forage crops are considered the third most important crop in Saskatchewan, after wheat and canola. Forage production helps in soil management, providing a rotation option, as well as aiding in the prevention of soil erosion, and helping to increase nutrient levels in the soil. Forages include annual and perennial legumes and grasses. Legumes
  • have thick tap roots that penetrate deeply into the soil
  • produce a high protein feed
  • add nitrogen to the soil, thereby increasing the soil's fertility For this reason they are an excellent addition to a crop rotation, especially on the less fertile grey-wooded soils.

Forage crops are critical to Kentucky agriculture. Beef cattle, horses and dairy cattle are major sources of farm income to Kentucky producers. Forage research activity at in agronomy includes post-harvest physiology of forage crops harvested as hay and silage, ingestive behavior of grazing cattle, breeding to improve forage crop yield, quality and other characteristics. A new program directed at assessment of the potential for livestock production on reclaimed mined land in the Appalachian region of Kentucky was initiated in 1995.
