    Introduction
Stockpiling is the practice of saving certain hay or pasture fields for grazing in the fall, and winter, after forage growth has stopped. Stockpiled pasture is also referred to as fall-saved pasture or deferred grazing, and is one of several extended grazing techniques. The primary reason for using stockpiled forage is to reduce feed and feeding costs. For each week that the grazing season is extended, total annual feed costs for a forage-fed animal (i.e., ewes or beef cows) are reduced by about 1%. This saving reflects the harvesting costs for grazed forage as compared to hay or silage harvesting, primarily on account of machinery, labour and other inputs not experienced in harvesting the same forage by grazing. Also livestock, grazing stockpiled pasture, spread their manure back onto the pasture without the cost of conventional manure hauling and spreading.

    Fertilizers for Forages
    Mark Alley
    W. G. Wysor Professor of Agriculture
Virginia Tech Blacksburg, VA 24061 Fertilizer use is an important factor for producing profitable forages and for maintaining soil productivity over years. Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are needed in most fields to support forage production at economic levels, produce quality forage, and to replace nutrients removed in forage harvests. The objectives of this paper are to: (1) discuss the concept of soil productivity; (2) illustrate nutrient removals with various levels of forage production; (3) establish the importance of soil pH and liming; and (4) list the properties of the major commercial N, P, and K fertilizer sources.
    Soil Productivity and Nutrient Removals
Table 1. Forage yield potentials and grazing capacities associated with soil productivity groups. Productivity Group Alfalfa or alfalfa-grass (t/a) Tall grass-clover hay (t/a) Acres per animal unit I II III IV Not suited Nutrients are required to grow forage plants, and different forage plants contain different levels of nutrients. Nutrient contents of various forages have been measured and some example values are shown in Table 2. Legumes generally contain higher amounts of N and K than non-legumes while P content does not vary greatly. Nutrient removals by forages can be estimated from the average nutrient content of the forage and the yield per acre. Nutrient removals per acre by forages will increase as yield levels increase (Table 3). Thus, over time, nutrient applications will need to be the greatest on soils that produce the highest yields. The greatest return on money spent for fertilizer can be expected on soils with the greatest yield potentials. These soils are capable of the highest yields, and yields will also be more consistent over years due to Group I productivity soils having high water-holding capacities.

    Know Your Forages
AS-991 , March 1990 Deanne Morse , Extension Dairy Specialist
Kevin Sedivec , Extension Rangeland Management Specialist Animal consumption of hay or silage depends on many things. One major determinant of forage intake is its quality. The nutrient composition of a forage helps to explain expected animal performance. Determining the chemical composition of forages is important. The amount of each nutrient in a forage, energy, protein, and mineral composition, needs to be determined before a diet can be balanced. Fiber content enables a nutritionist to estimate feed intake, digestibility of feed, energy content, and expected animal performance. The most frequently asked questions regarding forage analysis include:
    • Why should I have my forage analyzed? What components of the forage do I need to know? How do I get a representative sample of my forage? What is NIR and how does it differ from wet chemistry? Where can I get my forages evaluated? What recommendations exist for use of forage analysis results?
