Football mourns the death of Feher
Feher in full flight minutes before he collapses on the pitch Story Tools LISBON, Portugal (Reuters) Portugal soccer chiefs declared a day of mourning after the on-field death of Benfica's Hungarian international Miklos Feher. The 24-year-old striker collapsed on Sunday during a league game against Vitoria Guimaraes the victim of an apparent heart attack. Feher was the second international to die on the field of play in seven months after a heart condition killed Cameroon's Marc Vivien Foe at the Confederations Cup in France last June. "This is a bad day for us," Gilberto Madail, chairman of the Portuguese Soccer Federation, told TSF radio. "Last night was a truly black night." Feher collapsed on the rain-sodden pitch in injury time of the televised match with Benfica leading 1-0 having just scored through Fernando Aguiar. However, after a four-and-a-half hour autopsy the causes of Feher's death were still not known and the prosecutor general's department said in a statement that: "Tissue was taken from him for additional examinations."

Blatter: Football has drug problem
Blatter: "Our game is not clean." Story Tools FRANKFURT, Germany FIFA president Sepp Blatter has admitted that football has a doping problem and vowed to enforce stricter controls to clean up the sport. "Our game is not clean," Blatter told a news conference after FIFA's executive committee meeting. "There is now a suspicion surrounding football." Blatter also criticized the English Football Association over its handling of the Rio Ferdinand case. The Manchester United defender missed a drugs test in September but has yet to face an FA hearing. "The situation has changed on doping," said Blatter, who said in October that football did not have a problem with drugs. "I was wrong saying there was no problem with doping. I have never seen, in a doping control, someone not declare their innocence. If we want to make our sport clean we need to work on that. "It is not just the players but the people who employ them the clubs, the leagues and the national associations. The Executive Committee has given me a mandate today to be strict, stricter than we have been before and given me the power to act," added Blatter, who said he would prepare a dossier on doping in football before the end of the year.

Leeds post record football losses
Story Tools LONDON, England Leeds United have posted record annual losses for an English Premier League club of £49.5 million ($83.85m) and are still saddled with a debt of £78 million ($132m). The poor figures call into the question the long-term future of the former Champions League semifinalists, who are second bottom of the Premier League this season. Despite sales of star players such as Rio Ferdinand the overall debt has remained largely unchanged. The club also announced that turnover fell by 21 percent to £64 million as its annual losses to June 2003 almost doubled. "We have taken £20 million of costs out of the business and rebuilt the management team. As such it is now possible to begin to look forward with some confidence," chairman John McKenzie said in a statement. McKenzie added that they were working on a debt restructuring package with two key creditors and hoped to move to a break-even trading position by the end of the 2003-04 financial year.

Blatter: Football more than a business
Blatter: "Football is hope for so many people around the world." Story Tools RELATED Blater pledges to tackle drugs (CNN) FIFA president Sepp Blatter vowed to tackle drug use in the sport and said it was time to restore "respect and discipline" to football as the sport's world governing body marks its centenary. CNN World Sport anchor Don Riddell spoke to Blatter on Friday. RIDDELL: We are joined now in the studio by the most powerful man in the world of football, FIFA's president Sepp Blatter. Thank you for joining us Mr Blatter. You're over here in the UK of course as part of FIFA centenary celebrations. What have you got planned on the trip? BLATTER: Absolutely, we have a meeting of the International Football Association Board, who are the guardians of the laws of the game, and we'll pay tribute at the same time to British, and especially English, football for having organized Association Football. Later on, we have an executive committee of FIFA. We will go to a match Fulham vs. Manchester United and then on Monday we will be received by Her Majesty the Queen. This is the start of events to mark one hundred years in the history of FIFA. RIDDELL: Of course, this centenary is a great time for reflection but also a time to look forward to the next one hundred years. What do you think is the biggest immediate challenge for football at the moment?

Oliseh suspended in Bochum bust-up
Story Tools BOCHUM, Germany Bochum's Nigerian midfielder Sunday Oliseh has been suspended by the Bundesliga club following a clash with a teammate. Oliseh had to be restrained by teammates in a second half argument with Iranian midfielder Vahid Hashemian during Bochum's 0-0 draw with Hansa Rostock on Saturday. The argument had started during the halftime break and continued after the game, when the pair reportedly came to blows. Several newspapers claimed Oliseh had headbutted Hashemian, who later emerged with his nose bandaged. "I'll listen to the coach, to the assistant and to the captain. But if every player wants to be chief then the team will break up," said the Iranian. The incident threatens to disrupt what has been a hugely successful season for Bochum, who have climbed to fourth in the table. The club have now gone 744 minutes without conceding a goal at home, breaking a 27-year-old Bundesliga record. Oliseh is on loan at Bochum from Borussia Dortmund until the end of the season and the club has said previously that they would try and hang on to him.

Story Tools RELATED Perugia target female signing NEW YORK The growth of women's football has been hit by the collapse of the sport's only professional league, just days before the Women's World Cup is due to kick off in the United States. The Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) announced the closure of its league on Monday due to poor sponsorship sales and falling attendances. WUSA launched in 1999 after the U.S. national team captured the public imagination by winning the World Cup in front of 90,000 in Los Angeles. The world champions begin their title defense in Washington D.C. on Sunday, one day after the 16-team tournament opens in Philadelphia. WUSA bosses had hoped the return of the World Cup, which was moved to the U.S. from China in May due to the SARS virus, would bring in last-minute sponsorship.

Uncapped Edu named in Brazil squad
Story Tools RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) Arsenal midfielder Edu was one of four uncapped players named in the Brazil squad on Tuesday for this month's friendly in Hungary. Edu is joined by AS Roma full-back Mancini and German-based defenders Bordon and Dede while Real Madrid striker Ronaldo is rested. Ronaldo, who is expected to be out of action for two weeks with a hamstring injury, was excluded from the match in Budapest on doctor's orders. "This is his second injury in around one month, he has played 70 games already this season and we don't want to take any risks," coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said. "We want to preserve his health. He's not being dropped," added Parreira, who said he wanted Ronaldo fully fit for June, when Brazil face World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Chile. The world champions will be attempting to end a run of four successive draws the last two of them goalless and beat Hungary for the first time in the April 28 match.

    Marseille appeal Barthez rejection
Fabien Barthez will remain in France while Marseille appeal to FIFA Story Tools MARSEILLE, France Olympique Marseille have appealed against FIFA's refusal to allow the loan of French international goalkeeper Fabien Barthez from Manchester United. FIFA rejected the transfer after deciding they could not make an exception by allowing a player to move outside the transfer window which reopens in January. "Fabien Barthez, in agreement with Manchester United, will continue to train with Marseille until a decision is made on the appeal," said a spokesman. The appeal has been handed to the French Soccer Federation, who will in turn pass it over to FIFA. Marseille had asked permission to sign Barthez because their second-choice goalkeeper Cedric Carasso injured his knee in a charity match earlier this month and will be out for the rest of the season.

    Bolton snap up goalkeeper Ricketts
Story Tools BOLTON, England Bolton Wanderers are signing goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and the Jamaican could make his debut in Saturday's FA Cup third round tie at Tranmere. Ricketts is due to sign a loan deal with the Premiership club and could seal a permanent move at the end of the season. Bolton manager Sam Allardyce has confirmed that Wanderers' main transfer window target is Atletico Madrid striker Javi Moreno. But despite the confirmation of multi-millionaire businessman Eddie Davies' takeover of Bolton their manager is worried that money may still be in short supply. "We know who we're after but it's about whether we can afford them," Allardyce said. "It's the old story. I have to present a player to the chairman and then I find out whether I can afford him or not. "The financial restrictions are a problem because I don't have a budget. I find a player and the club tries to find the money and that makes life difficult. "If I'd had a budget I could have concluded all our business in the first week or two, which is what I was hoping to do.

AC Milan stay ahead on CNN Top 10
European champions Milan are on a roll in Serie A and the Champions League. Story Tools LONDON, England (CNN) AC Milan retain the top spot in the CNN/World Soccer Top 10 poll this week, after a 2-0 defeat of Modena at the San Siro put them level on points with Serie A leaders Roma, who have a better goal difference. Milan, already through to the second stage of the Champions League, also progressed in the Italian Cup this week and led this week's poll ahead of Spanish league leaders Real Madrid. English Premiership leaders Chelsea, who were not in last week's list, have shot into third position after Frank Lampard's penalty gave them 1-0 league victory over champions Manchester United, who have slipped two places to sixth. Roma, now at the top of Serie A ahead of Milan on goal difference following their 3-1 win over Lecce, have moved into the rankings at number nine. Ronaldo's first minute goal and a second effort from Raul sent Real Madrid to the top of the Primera Liga with a 2-0 win in the Madrid derby against Atletico.
