The President of Malta
Edward Fenech Adami was elected President of the Republic on 4 th April 2004. Edward Fenech Adami was born in 1934, the son of a customs officer. He was educated at the Jesuits College and the University of Malta, where he first studied economics and the classics and later law. He was called to the bar in 1959. Dr. Fenech Adami joined the Christian Democratic Nationalist Party (PN) in the early 1960s, establishing a reputation as a reserved but determined and capable constituency official. He entered parliament in 1969 and in 1977, less than ten years later, after having served in a number of senior party posts, including president of the Administrative and General Councils, he was elected party leader, succeeding Dr. Giorgio Borg-Olivier. Since 1969, he has been returned to Parliament at every General Election and as Leader of his Party won five popular elections, 1981, 1987, 1992, 1998 and 2003. In 1981, although the Nationalist Party obtained an absolute majority of votes, it did not succeed to win a majority of seats in Parliament, and therefore remained in Opposition. Constitutional changes were then made to guarantee that the party winning an absolute majority of votes would have a parliamentary majority as happened in 1987.

Discussions and Activities
  • On a map of the world mark the origins of different football codes and trace their path to the different states of Australia. Use a Venn diagram to record the similarities and differences between football codes. Use this information to invent your own game. List the football codes reported in The Courier-Mail. Present the number of stories reported for each code as a percentage of the total number of sports stories. Write three conclusions about your findings. Compare Rugby League coverage in your local paper, The Courier-Mail and a national paper (The Australian) as a percentage of space taken in the sports section of each paper. Account for the differences. Make a collage of a rugby league crowd scene showing how sporting events help to integrate communities. Use pictures cut from the newspaper and speech bubbles to describe the events behind the scene at a game. Make a website directory for a Rugby League fan.

Boys' Uniforms: Sports and AthleticsRugby
Figure 1.This illustration of a rugby match appeared in the English "Boys' Own Paper" during 1879. The photography of the day could not capture motion. Notice that the boys wear uniforms that look rather like American football uniformsknicker length and kneesocks. Notice the variety of caps. Rugby is another form of football. It is named after the English public (exclusive private) school) where some of the modern rules were developed. American football has evolved from Rugby. In many ways it is an anomaly. It became along with cricket, the principal sports (games) played at public schools and of interest to upperclass English. This appears a contradiction in that the sport requires enormous physical strength, extensive physical contact, and played in the English autumn is an often muddy, filthy slog. The public schools in turn rejected football (soccer), an elegant game requiring more finess and with less physical contact. Football proceeded to become the game of choice of the working class and virtually the entire rest of the world, except America.
Public Schools
The history of football is inextricablly intertwined became popular with England's public schools. The public schools were boarding institutions which needed needed recreation for their boys when not studying. Football-like games had been played at public schools for years. Various schools played to their own rules which were developed informally by the boys over time.

89. Boys' Uniforms : Sports And Athletics -- Country Trends
Other sports are very specific to certain countries. Scotland played a major rolein golf. Only Australians play Australian rules football or footy .
Boys' Sport Uniforms: Country Trends
Figure 1.We notice Japanese boys in a variety of athletic uniforms, but we are not always sure just what sport is involved. Notice the caps have chin straps, but not all the boyswear them.
We do not have a lot of information on Australia yet. We know that both football (soccer) and rugby are popular there. Only Australians play Australian rules football or "footy". Another popular sport is tennis.
The most popular sport in Canada is ice hockey and many Canadian boys play the sport. The Canadians maintain that ice hockey actually originated in Canada. Despite the fact that Canada was a British colony, Canadians appear to have pursued American sports like baseball, basketball, and football more than British sports like cricket and soccer. We notice both French-Canandian as well as English-Canadian boys playing sports like baseball. A Canadian reader writes, "Notice, that even at the height of the British Empire, Canada had North American sports." We do not know if there was any difference between the French and English community as to sports. We do not know if experiences such as Little League Baseball and beginning in the 1970s soccer leagues were also common in Canada.
No country is more important to the development of modern sports than England. Many sports have English origins (rugby footbal, soccer, cricket, and hockey). These sports were spread around the world because of the importance of the British Empire so that now England often looses international competitions to its former colonies. Cricket is very popular in South Asia and the Caribbean, Rugby is very popular in New Zealand and Fiji. Cricket may well be the most destinctively English sport. The leisuely way in which a match is played make in more of an event than a game. as in most of Europe, however, it is football soccer that has captured the imagination of English boys. Unlike America, girls do not seem nearly s captivatd by it. Rugby is much less widely played. Social class has had a major impact on sport in Britain. Football was one seen as a working class sport. ome public (exclusive private) schools once banned football in favor of rugby.

Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

There are Olympians, All-Americans, record-holders, League Players of the Year and most importantly, citizens of Penn, that distinguish our University like none other. Starting from way back when, Paul Scull, W'29 was a fine representative of the Penn football program. He still holds the oldest unbroken record in Penn football history as his single game total of 312 all-purpose yards has stood for 73 years. Set during the final game of the 1928 season against Cornell, Scull scored four touchdowns, recorded seven PATs, passed for 229 yards, intercepted one pass, returned kickoffs for 75 yards and made four first downs.

Summer represented a time to take even more art classes, this time in Woodstock, New York where he was taught by Andrew Dasburg. An important influence in his artistic career, Dasburg encouraged Adams to move to New Mexico in 1924 where he remained until his death. The subjects of his paintings were mainly comprised of his compassionate regard for Hispanics and his interest in landscapes. As a portraitist, Adams possessed an interest in capturing the character of northern New Mexican people. He was the last artist to join the Taos Society of Artists before it disbanded in 1927. According to art historians, his blend of conservative and modernist styles made him a pivotal figure between the founders of the Taos Society and its second generation members.
