Friday 2 April 2004 Athens - Soccer consumes 73 per cent of broadcasters’ sports expenditure and the proportion is rising at the expense of most other sports, including Olympic sports, according to Marc Joerg, head of sports rights at the European Broadcasting Union, the umbrella body of European, mainly public-service, broadcasters. Only motor sport is maintaining its share of broadcasters’ sports expenditure at 7 per cent. All other sports are accounted for by the remaining 20 per cent, a figure which is set to shrink further as soccer‘s share grows. The warning to all sports except soccer came in an address by Joerg to the International Association of Athletics Federations’ two-day television seminar which concluded yesterday in Athens. Joerg warned that sport is becoming too expensive for television, with the result that broadcasters are increasingly concentrating only on premium sports and events, creating strong competition for television airtime and financing. Moreover, the cost of sports rights is now disproportionate to the costs of production, leading broadcasters to seek other, cheaper forms of programming to fill peak-time slots.

The National College Sports Network
will go on the air early in 2003.
The NCSN will be exclusively televising college sports, and showing Olympic sports, which currently have few television contracts. Picture a world where UCLA water polo games are on national television. Or imagine watching an episode of SportsCenter that doesn't even mention pro sports for the entire hour. Sound like the nightly fantasy of a college sports nut? Well it could soon be reality, as the National College Sports Network is set to debut in early 2003 with 24/7 coverage of all college sports, from archery to yachting (there are no college sports that start with a Z). Bevilacqua is a former Nike marketing executive, and his partners, Brian Bedol and Steven Greenberg, helped launch ESPN Classic.

Cameroon won their first ever gold medal in any Olympic sport when they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with nine-man Spain and then beat them 5-3 on penalties in a remarkable soccer final. The victory gives Cameroon the double of being African and Olympic champions in the same year. The modern victor would have worthy antecedents. For no-one encapsulates the spirit of the Ancient Olympics more than the great Herodoros of Megara.
