Sydney Football Stadium
The Moore Park area is one of Sydney's major sporting precincts, housing both the Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) and the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), and hosting numerous major cricket, rugby union, rugby league, Australian Rules and soccer football) matches.
During the Olympic Games the SFS will co-host the Sydney 2000 football events. The cycling road course starts on Driver Avenue, outside the stadium, before winding its way around nearby Centennial Park to Bronte before returning to the finish line outside the stadium.
Created by Phillip Cox, who also designed the Sydney International Aquatic Centre, the stadium's main architectural feature is its saddle roof, which creates a bowl-like effect. The playing surface is 13 metres below street level to reduce the overall profile — a technique employed to harmonise the structure with its residential surroundings.
Located in Sydney's eastern suburbs, the stadium is close to the restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops of the fashionable inner-city suburbs of Paddington and Surry Hills.
Football is the only Olympic sport that will be also staged at venues outside of Sydney. Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Canberra will also host the preliminary games with the men's final to be held at the Olympic Stadium at Homebush. Most of the games in the women's competition, including the gold medal decider on Thursday, 28 September, will be held at the Sydney Football Stadium.
