Olympic Motto The Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Braver," but is universally accepted to mean "Swifter, Higher, Stronger." Olympic Rings The Olympic symbolfive interlocked ringsrepresents the union of the five original major continents (Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe) and the meeting of the athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games. The five colors of the rings from left to right are blue, black and red across the top and yellow and green along the bottom. The colors of the rings are thought to have been chosen because at least one of these colors can be found in the flag of every nation. Olympic Flag The Olympic Flag has a plain white background with no border. In the center are the five interlocked Olympic rings. The flag was presented by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1914 at the Olympic Congress is 1914, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of the International Olympic Committee. It was flown that year at Alexandria, Greece, but made its Olympic debut in 1920 at Antwerp. The "primary" Olympic flag was thus known as "the Antwerp flag." In 1984, Seoul presented a new Olympic flag (as the old was getting quite worn) to the IOC, which was first flown at the 1988 Olympic Games. At the Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games, the mayor of the Olympic host city presents the Olympic flag to the mayor of

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE IRAQ STUNS FOOTBALL WORLD WITH UPSET VICTORY; EARNS HISTORIC FIRST TRIP TO THE OLYMPIC GAMES Victory Guarantees Iraq Soccer Team a Place at 2004 Athens Olympic Games
Amman, Jordan May 12, 2004 – In a stunning upset victory, the Iraq national football team defeated Saudi Arabia tonight 3 to1 to earn a trip to the 2004 Olympic Summer games in Athens. The victory marks the first time in Iraq’s history that its football team will compete in the Olympics. In addition to defeating Saudi Arabia, Iraq needed a draw in the final game between Kuwait and Oman to qualify. The game ended 0-0 sealing Iraq’s bid.
“This means Iraq is on the right path,” said Hawar Mulla Mohammed through tears moments after the game. He had scored the team’s go-ahead, and eventually winning, goal of the game. “Our entire country deserves this incredible win. When the bus pulled into the stadium tonight we refused to think of anything but winning and now we are headed to Athens,” concluded the soon to be Olympian.
“The Iraqi team played a great match tonight,” said National Olympic Committee of Iraq President Ahmed Al-Samarrai “Simply stated this is the biggest moment in Iraqi Olympic history.”

Cashier/Wagering Open Account Members ... History of Women's Soccer - History of Women's Soccer - Ellen Wille, the Norwegian association's delegate at the 45th FIFA Congress in Mexico City in 1986, impressed upon FIFA that more should be done to further women' soccer and to unfold the latent potential in this sector of the game. Little did Wille know her spark would light the way for the women's soccer movement. Presiding over the debates at the Congress, former FIFA President João Havelange not only agreed entirely with the Norwegian female representative but also assured her that he personally would back the women's soccer movement, setting up an ad hoc committee as the first step.
Havelange and then-General Secretary Joseph "Sepp" Blatter were serious about supporting the women's sector. As a long-serving member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Havelange had seen for himself how women had been given the opportunity to compete as equals in a variety of Olympic disciplines to the sheer delight of the crowds. It was only a question of time before women would be beating the drum for their own world soccer tournament. If soccer genuinely intended to achieve universal appeal, it could not turn its back on the female half of the world's population.
Following the FIFA President's consent, the women's soccer scene in pioneering countries such as Norway, Sweden, Germany, Italy and the USA - where 40 percent of all the players enrolled in clubs are girls and women - was given a shot in the arm. The prospects of a world championship afforded women's soccer an arena that would highlight the attractiveness and style of this type of soccer. In any case, it was high time to snuff out any remaining prejudice, which, although unfounded, would still be difficult to eradicate.

John Woodruff, Connellsville's Olympic Champion
By Jim Kriek John Woodruff leaned back in his chair, looked far away and back over the years for a second, then smiled, "I have often wondered just how far I really ran that day." "The Day" was August 4, 1936, in Berlin, Germany, when Woodruff pulled what was then called "the most daring move ever seen on track" to win the 800-meters Gold Medal in the Olympic Games, the last ones held before World War Two. The international competition would not resume until 1948 in London. But back on that hot August day in 1936, Woodruff had finished his freshman year at the University of Pittsburgh, and after a short visit to his home in Connellsville, PA, had sailed to Berlin. As he reflected on that day, Woodruff also had to be remembering his early days in Connellsville, and how he came within a couple moves of perhaps not finishing high school, let alone competing in the Olympics.

On May 28 and 29, 1851, the Ohio Woman's Rights Convention met in Akron . Mrs. Frances D. Gage, convention president, began the proceedings with a stirring call to arms: Are not the natural wants and emotions of humanity...shared equally by both sexes? Does man hunger and thirst, suffer cold and heat more than woman? Does he love and hate, hope and fear, joy and sorrow more than woman? Does his heart thrill with a deeper pleasure in doing good? Can his soul writhe in more bitter agony under the consciousness of evil or wrong? Is the sunshine more glorious, the air more quiet, the sounds of harmony more soothing, the perfume of flowers more exquisite, or forms of beauty more soul-satisfying to his senses than to hers. To all these interrogatories every one will answer, No! "Opening Address," The Proceedings of the Woman's Rights Convention, held at Akron, Ohio, May 28 and 29, 1851 , published 1851.

1996 Summer Olympics in the news See also: 1996 Summer Paralympics The Games of the XXVI Olympiad were held in in Atlanta Georgia , United States. Atlanta was selected in above Athens Belgrade Manchester Melbourne and Toronto. Athens had hoped to organise the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games . The IOC 's vote for Atlanta was therefore slightly surprising, however the feeling was that Athens' infrastructure could not be improved enough in time to successfully host the Games. It was regarded by some as one of the least successful of the modern games. The problem of traffic congestion sometimes made travel between venues difficult. There were complaints at how omnipresent the advertising was, with Coca-Cola especially being marketed on every available surface. Also during the games, the Centennial Olympic Park bombing took place on July 27, killing Alice Hawthorne and wounding 111 others, and causing the death of Melih Uzunyol by heart attack. In his closing speech, Juan Antonio Samaranch , head of the IOC, for the first time did not describe the games as being the "best ever".

The concept was born in the early 1960s when Shriver started a day camp for people with mental retardation. She saw that individuals with mental retardation were far more capable in sports and physical activities than many experts thought. Since 1968, millions of children and adults with mental retardation have participated in Special Olympics.
