Los Angeles - the American way
The financial crisis which prompted the stock exchange crash of 1929 did not truly affect the success of the 1932 Games, held in Los Angeles between July 30 and August 14. This 10th Olympiad was held a couple of paces from Hollywood, with Charlie Chaplin, Gary Cooper, and Douglas Fairbanks taking their seats among the spectators. In "their" 105,000-seater Coliseum stadium the American athletes, including Mildred "Babe" Didriksen, winner of the 80m hurdles, javelin and runner-up in the high jump, had plenty to cheer about. But in swimming it was the Japanese who dominated, winning five out of six titles. In total the United States annexed 103 medals, with 41 golds, ahead of Italy (36, 12 gold), France (19, 10 gold) and Sweden (23, 9 gold).

A Greek legend tells of the great Heracles (or Hercules, in Latin ) who won a race at Olympia and then decreed that the race should be re-enacted every four years. Another legend says that Zeus had instated the festival after his defeat of Cronus . According to yet another legend, King Iphitos of Elidos consulted the

Played with a ball like a cross between an American Football and a soccer ball, there is no sport like it for fitness and other health benefits. You jog, sprint, catch, pass and kick the ball, tackle, wrestle, jump and occasionally have pause for breath. You develop strength in your arms and legs, limberness, stamina and endurance, dexterity in handling the ball and flexibility in the way you run - dodging and weaving and side-stepping like never before.
Rugby Past
The History of Rugby begins in the early 1800's when formalities were introduced to soccer rules in the seven major public schools of England. Six of the seven schools were largely playing the same game - while the seventh, Rugby School (founded in 1567) in Warwickshire, was playing a markedly different version of soccer. This was to become known as rugby.
The other schools moved ahead refining their rules and eventually their game became known as "association football" - soccer. How the Rugby School's game developed differently is lost in the history of rugby and the true story is unlikely to ever be known.

In 2004, the Olympic Games are returning to their ancient birthplace ( 776 BC, ancient Olympia ) and the city of their revival ( 1896 AD, Athens ). In King George of Greece opened the Games on April 5, in front of a crowd of 60,000. The original Olympic medals were silver and were only awarded to the winner of an event. 13 countries came to Athens to compete for the silver medals. The first Olympiad challenged athletes in 43 events, falling under nine sports: cycling, fencing, gymnastics, lawn tennis, shooting, swimming, track and field, weight lifting and wrestling. The events were open to anyone wanting to participate. Most entrants were college students or athletic club members, and the concept of national teams had not yet emerged.

The US rugby community moves into 2004 in eager anticipation of spring competitions at the local and territorial union levels. It will culminate in a festival of national championship runs for both men and women, for high school, college and club teams and from the Super League to Division III. We do so having just emerged from the thrilling quadrennial spectacle of the Rugby World Cup in Sydney. The RWC, which is the third largest athletic competition in the world after the Olympic Games and the Soccer World Cup, was won by England, the first time ever by a northern hemisphere team. And in the wake of that historic rugby first, US sports enthusiasts will be witness this year to the XVIII Summer Olympic Games in Athens. What more timely and appropriate moment for an entertaining visit to the past for a brief review of rugby and the Olympic Games?

The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee was formerly called the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Association The Working Committee was first established in 1946, when it was felt that Trinidad and Tobago, a British Colony at the time, should take part in the quadrennial Olympic Games. This original Committee made up of four member-federations (Athletics, Cycling, Football and Weightlifting) was extended provisional recognition by the International Olympic Committee in 1946, thus Trinidad and Tobago was able to send a Team to the Central American and Caribbean Games held in Barranquilla, Colombia. Formal affiliation to the International Olympic Committee was granted to the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Association at the International Olympic Committee session held in London (1948) on the occasion of the celebration of the 15th Olympic Games. From four affiliates in the year 1948 the number of affiliated National Bodies now number eighteen and govern the sports of Athletics, Rugby, Badminton, Basketball, Bobsleigh Boxing, Cycling, Football, Men and Women's Hockey, Judo, Lawn Tennis, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volley Ball and Yachting. The General Council of the Committee is composed of one delegate per affiliate, except at the Annual General Meeting, when each affiliate is allowed two delegates. The decree called for the dungeon for those who played this. "violent" sport. Nearly 700 years later, football is considered the "king of sports" - so much for Edward II's royal decree. Football was first introduced as an Olympic sport in 1900 during the Paris Olympics, while women's soccer enters the Olympic world during Atlanta's Games of 1996. The 1992 Barcelona Olympics introduce changes in the rules of the Olympic soccer competition, excluding the star-studded national team squads that participate in the extremely popular World Cup. Instead, all but three players must be under age 23. On the women's side players must be over 16. Football (soccer) is played by two 11-player teams (plus seven alternates, one of which must be a goalie) on a rectangular field measuring 64 to 75 meters in width and 100 to 110 meters in length. The aim of the game is to score goals by passing the ball over the line of the opposing team's goal line. The goal line is 7.32 meters in width and 2.44 meters in height. The game time is divided into two halves, each lasting 45 minutes, with a half-time break of 15 minutes. In the event of a tied score, there is a 30-minute overtime of two 15-minute halves. In the not so uncommon event that the score remains tied, the process of penalty kicks determines the winner. In the history of the Olympic Games soccer tournaments, Britain and Hungary have won three gold medals; the former Soviet Union and Uruguay have each won two.
