Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

TMDC - Iran ’s most memorable performance in Olympics football competition was in the Montreal 1976 games. Team Melli Iran was undeniably the most powerful Asian team of the late seventies. In 1974 Iran won the Asian Games football gold medal for the first time, and subsequently this team carried on its supremacy to boundaries beyond which Iran has rarely experienced. The Olympic 1976 qualification games started a year earlier with a round-ribbon tournament in Tehran , where Iran was joined by Bahrain Kuwait Saudi Arabia and Iraq Iran headed that group and qualified for the games. The results were as follows:- 20-Aug-75 Oly. Games Qual IRAN Bahrain
Amjadiah 22-Aug-75 Oly. Games Qual IRAN Kuwait

ANCIENT ORIGINS BEAUTIFUL GAME A MINORITY SPORT AT THE GAMES
To the pleasure of all those sports that are thoroughly swamped by football year in, year out, the beautiful game's vast popularity beyond the Olympiad has not translated to popularity within it and many a match at the Olympic Games, though not the final, is played to audiences of several hundred. In Sydney there are, however, 1.6 million tickets on sale because of the size of football stadiums compared with the venues of other sports. If sold, they would make football the most watched sport. The introduction of a women's event at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, and the fact that the title was won by the US, helped to generate a little more interest but only the stars of World Cup football could really turn the spotlight on the game when it becomes the first sport to be played at Sydney. Football is the only sport at the Games that will played outside Sydney, with matches scheduled for Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne, as well as the host city.

Corporate Sponsors ·. Ivy olympic history adopted by the press as a foreshadowing of an eastern football league which, at the time, was big news to everyone
    http://www.dhatrust.org/about/ivy.asp
IVY HISTORY IN THE MODERN OLYMPICS
    IVY OLYMPIANS, 1896—PRESENT
The designation, "Ivy League," is credited to Caswell Adams of the New York Tribune in 1937. The tag predates any formal agreement set by the league, but was immediately adopted by the press as a foreshadowing of an eastern football league which, at the time, was big news to everyone except the athletic directors involved. Athletes from Ivy universities have been an integral part of the Olympics since the first Summer Games of the modern era in Athens in 1896. That year, athletes from Harvard and Princeton, led by Robert Garrett Jr. (Princeton 1897), Thomas E. Burke (Harvard 1901), and Ellery H. Clark (Harvard 1896) dominated the inaugural event with 18 medals. In 1900, in Paris, Ivy athletes from Penn, Columbia, Yale, Harvard, Brown and Princeton took home even more Olympic metal: a total of 28 medals in track and field alone. This means that US athletes, along with those from developing nations, compete against well-paid athletes who are funded, trained and coached by their national federations. Yet even Ivy graduates no longer represent the well-to-do: over 50 percent receive financial aid in college.

Some dream of the Olympic tournament joining the four majors to comprise a 'Golden Slam' but for the majority of players the Games' reputation is diminished by the fact that it carries no prize money or world ranking points. The sport was one of the original events in the first modern Games in 1896, but the definition of professionalism, squabbles over rules and a clash of dates with Wimbledon meant the 1924 competition became the last for 64 years. It was Philippe Chatrier, the International Tennis Federation president, who lobbied for the sport's return. In 1968 and 1984 tennis was a non-medal demonstration competition at the Games.

    http://www.didyouknow.cd/sport/football.htm
Sports facts The History of Football (Soccer) A sport similar to football was played 3000 years ago in Japan. Chinese text from 50 BC mentions football-type games between teams from Japan and China. A text dating from 611 AD confirms that football was played in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. Ancient Greeks and Romans also played a game that resembled football - although the Greeks permitted carrying of the ball. Olympic games in ancient Rome featured a 50-minute football game with twenty-seven men on a side. The early days
How the sport spread from the East to Europe is not clear but England became the home of modern football. At first the game had a bad reputation among English royalty - possibly because of the noise the fans made - by whose insistence the government passed laws against it. King Edward (1307-1327) proclaimed, "For as much as there is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls, from which many evils may arise, which God forbid, we forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city." In 1365 King Edward III banned football because of its excessive violence and for military reasons playing took time away from archery practice the game had become too popular to be curtailed. King Henry IV and Henry VIII passed laws against the sport, and Queen Elizabeth I "had soccer players jailed for a week, with follow-up church penance"
