FOOSBALL UK TABLE FOOTBALL INFORMATION Table Football History Originally from RePlay Magazine February 28, 1976
From Table Soccer Digest, Vol 1 No 1, Fall 1986
The Table Soccer Phenomenon
The history of coin operated table soccer can be compared to the growth of an oak tree. Slow sure and ultimately monumental in stature. From a primitive wooden box, some wooden dowels and a lot of imagination, the European game has developed into a professional piece of amusement equipment today, taking its place alongside the flipper, shuffle and pool table as an industry staple. Further, it has even outdistanced its sister games with respect to fan following. The almost cultish adoration of table soccer found in many communities among young and old players alike may ultimately do more for the public image of the coin industry in general than all the public relations programs rolled up together. The original game we know as table soccer probably originated in Germany during the late 20's and early 30's. We say ''probably'' because some feel the French were working with such games at the same time. But the game did flower in Germany and became a location staple there years before it made its first timid appearance in the United States. Bud Wachter of Diverse Products (Red Bank. N.J.), a table importer and a student on the history of the piece, recalls that ''practically every village in Germany has their field soccer team which compares to our sandlot baseball teams. Some of the more organised teams have their clubhouse right at the field or a favourite bier stub (bar) where they gather to celebrate their victories or drown their sorrows for losses. Some enterprising club somewhere in Germany probably decided a game imitating soccer was needed back in the old days. They made one and very soon the idea expanded and practically every club had their 'kicker' game. This name stuck and it's still one of the most common names for the game in Germany.''

Hoosier History:
PINE VILLAGE FOOTBALL by Doris Cottingham The Warren County Historical Society received an Indiana Heritage Research Grant for this 1995 project. The IHRG program is co-sponsored by the Indiana Humanities Council and the Indiana Historical Society. Not many people know it, but Pine Village in rural Warren County on the western edge of Indiana was once a national power in the sport of professional football. Here is its story: 1900 group picture. Taken in front of Warren Co. Courthouse.
(Source: Hubert B. Shackleton.) In 1898, Clinton Beckett, the principal of the small Pine Village school who was also the high school teacher, introduced the sport to the Villagers. Two teams were formed: the high school team and the "town" team made up of the high school team and men into their twenties. Jacob Shackleton served as manager of the team, according to accounts in the Attica Daily Ledger . Football became the Village's dominant sport of interest for the next 20 years. Before Jake Shackelton became manager of the team, he was a farmer who had an interest in batteries, and in the early 1890s he set up a telephone system between his close-by relatives and himself. This convenience was soon extended to his neighbors. (The depot along the C.E.&I. railroad a mile or so from his house became known as Chatterton.) While farming and managing the team, he was exploring the possibilities of setting up a telephone exchange at Pine Village. He needed $1,000, a substantial amount of money for the time, for the exchange. He needed another $1,000 for the team. In 1903 when he approached his brother, Ben, for a loan of $2,000, he was told, "Get rid of the team and I'll lend you the $1,000 for the exchange." He sold the team to Claire Rhode.

History of ABC's Monday Night Football
    ABC Sports Online
ABC's NFL Monday Night Football , which just completed its 33rd season, is not only the longest-running and most successful primetime sports series in television history, but it has also become a way of life. On any given Monday evening, more than 50 million Americans at home, in bars, in restaurants and dorms adjust their social and business schedules to view the telecast. Monday Night Football has been ranked in the top 10 among all primetime shows each of the last 13 years, and it remains the No. 1 show among men. Veteran ABC Sports announcer Al Michaels completed his 17th consecutive season as the play-by-play voice of Monday Night Football . He was joined this year by the legendary John Madden, who came to MNF after 21 seasons of calling games for CBS and Fox. This was Melissa Stark's third season as sideline reporter. Monday Night Football first burst onto the airways on September 21, 1970 as the Cleveland Browns played host to the New York Jets, but that was not the beginning of the concept. The National Football League earlier had begun to explore the possibilities of primetime football, initially with CBS and NBC. However, not wishing to disrupt their primetime entertainment schedule of the "Doris Day Show" and "Laugh-In," respectively, they declined the NFL's offer.
