    Date: January 30, 1995 Contact: Lynn Robbins or Mary Liesner,(505) 646-1807 Editor: D'Lyn Ford,(505) 646-1807 , LAS CRUCES New Mexico State University's College of Agriculture and Home Economics received $60,000 for a minority scholarship program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Funding for the Fabian Garcia Multicultural Scholars Program was announced Jan. 27. The scholarships, named after a pioneering agricultural researcher at NMSU, will provide $5,750 annually for four years to each of three students preparing for careers in food science or agriculture. Fabian Garcia was the nation's first Hispanic director of an Agricultural Experiment Station. During his tenure from 1913 to 1945, he introduced the first commercial varieties of chile and made significant contributions in cotton, pecan and onion research. Garcia was a member of the first graduating class of New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later NMSU).
