Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Almost 4 in 10 salaried agricultural and food scientists work for Federal, State, or local governments.
  • A bachelor’s degree in agricultural science is sufficient for some jobs in applied research; a master’s or doctoral degree is required for basic research.
  • Slower-than-average job growth is projected because of limited growth in the Federal Government and modest growth in State and local governments, the largest employers of these scientists.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top The work of agricultural and food scientists plays an important part in maintaining the Nation’s food supply by ensuring agricultural productivity and the safety of the food supply. Agricultural scientists study farm crops and animals, and develop ways of improving their quantity and quality. They look for ways to improve crop yield with less labor, control pests and weeds more safely and effectively, and conserve soil and water. They research methods of converting raw agricultural commodities into attractive and healthy food products for consumers. Agricultural science is closely related to biological science, and agricultural scientists use the principles of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and other sciences to solve problems in agriculture. They often work with biological scientists on basic biological research and on applying to agriculture the advances in knowledge brought about by biotechnology.

The food safety minor, major, graduate and graduate certificate programs are interdisciplinary courses of study. They are oriented toward the single issue of food safety, an area of concern around the world; the current target of tremendous interest, effort and spending nationwide; and an area in which shortages of expertise are already manifest. These programs present students from a variety of backgrounds with an opportunity to augment their education and careers with a novel, integrated food safety curriculum designed to provide them with the necessary knowledge and requisite problem-solving skills to thrive in tomorrow's food-related workplace. The undergraduate and the graduate programs are offered through the Great Plains Institute of Food Safety. The Program Back to fact sheet index The Curriculum The food safety educational programs have at their core, courses in food safety, SAFE 450/650, SAFE 464/664, SAFE 470/670 and SAFE 484/684, which are only offered during the summer semester. For the minor, an additional five hours must come from approved electives in the Colleges of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences or Human Development and Education. A sample curriculum for the major is provided. Students interested in post-graudate studies in food safety are encouraged to contact the director.

    http://www.open2.net/everwondered_food/science/science_health.htm
Health In a very real sense, we are what we eat. The proteins, carbohydrates, sugars, vitamins and minerals in our diet are broken down by digestion and rebuilt into the complex assemblies of macromolecules that make up our bodies. An understanding of the science of nutrition can explain why a well-balanced diet can translate into a healthy body. But there are times when food turns into the enemy. To people with food allergies , what should otherwise be a nutritious meal can become life-threatening. Certain food additives have been banned, because of fears they might cause cancer. And with the advent of genetically modified (GM) food , the potential impact may spread well beyond the health of our own species. Media scare-stories are powerful and disturbing. Many people worry about the food they eat and the processes used to produce it. But what are the actual risks, and how much of it is hype? Once again, an understanding of the science can help you to find out. Also in this section, read the debate surrounding

    http://www.lsro.org/
Since 1962, the LSRO has provided expert evaluation of issues, opportunities, data, programs, and proposals in scientific research and clinical medicine. Our modern era is a time of great promise, opportunity, and challenge in the biomedical, agricultural, social, and environmental sciences. The conduct and application of science and its place in the fabric of American society have become everyday concerns, and science plays an important role in ensuring U.S. competitiveness in the global marketplace. We want to know how safe are the foods we eat and the medications we take. We need to understand what determines misconduct in science. We debate whether the contributions of science to the health and welfare of the citizenry justify its cost. We question whether science education is keeping up with changing times. Research directors and administrators, policymakers, health care professionals, and educators need expert information, analyses, and consultation regarding these and many other questions. The LSRO has carefully built an international reputation for objectivity and confidentiality, and it is widely regarded as an authoritative source of sound scientific information, independent of special interest groups and politics.
LSRO reports are timely, comprehensive, state-of-the-science reviews. Moreover, its experience with regulatory and governmental processes has proven exceptionally useful to clients from the public and private sector alike.
