The Department's Food Safety and Security Office is responsible for the enforcement of the Virginia Food laws, the Virginia Egg Law, the Virginia Apple Marking Law, the Vinegar Law and related regulations within retail food establishments (except restaurants), food processing and manufacturing establishments, and food warehouse establishments. The state is divided into territories with a Food Safety Specialist assigned to each. The Food Safety Specialist is responsible for conducting all food safety activities within that territory. Food safety activities are conducted through a variety of methods including, but not limited to, unannounced sanitary inspections of facilities, sampling of food products, investigation of consumer complaints, consultations with consumers and the food industry, and cooperative working relationships with other food safety agencies such as state and local health departments, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Food Processing
Because of its many years of experience in the areas of food technology and residue analysis of raw materials, intermediates and end products, the Institut Fresenius is able to maintain a complete and unique service for virtually all areas of the food industry. Almost all conventional techniques can be used under industrial production conditions as required, such as bottle and can filling, grinding, fermentation and sterilisation.
The Institut Fresenius monitors the processing and assumes the following tasks:

    The Division assesses and monitors nutritional situations and requirements and provides advice and assistance aimed at improving: the nutritional status of all, particularly the poor and most vulnerable groups in developing countries; food quality, safety and standards; and food science including food composition. It has primary responsibility for coordinating FAO nutrition-related activities in follow-up to international meetings and agreements.
