The Right Chef There is a wide variety of popular diets on the market these days (South Beach, Atkins, Sugar Busters, Weight Watchers, Zone). Dieters are spoiled for choice over which diet to choose next: Should they copy their favorite celebrity’s latest diet craze? Perhaps they should follow the in-crowd at work and opt for the diet that 95% of the workforce is currently on! Before you can say ‘cream cake’ they’ve rushed out and spent hundreds of dollars on diet books along with several grocery bags full of low-fat, low-carb, and low-everything-else food, when in actual fact they haven’t really got a clue which diet they should be following. With regards to the number of diet books hitting the shelves over recent years, AMA Spokesman and Melbourne doctor, Rick Kausman, stated: “It’s mayhem what’s going on out there.” Click here for a symptom self test to see if any of your symptoms are linked to reactions to foods toxic to your system - they may be foods recommended on your diet!

Food Allergies and Intolerance
Many people believe they have a food allergy or intolerance and exclude
particular foods from their diet. If this applies to just one or two specific foods, or if you can substitute another similar food in its place, such as rice instead of potatoes, or pears instead of apples, your diet is unlikely to suffer. However you should not exclude whole food groups, staple food items such as bread or meat from your diet, or long lists of different foods, without speaking to a doctor or dietitian. One of the dangers of self-diagnosing food intolerances, especially in children, is that it can lead to very restricted diets, which may lack important nutrients. Children with suspected food intolerances should always see a dietitian to ensure that they are consuming enough to meet all their nutritional needs. Children are often fussy eaters at the best of times so never add to the difficulties by excluding a food without good reason. SOURCE: bbc.co.uk

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Food allergies or food intolerances affect nearly everyone at some point. People often have an unpleasant reaction to something they ate and wonder if they have a food allergy. One out of three people either say that they have a food allergy or that they modify the family diet because a family member is suspected of having a food allergy. But only about three percent of children have clinically proven allergic reactions to foods. In adults, the prevalence of food allergy drops to about one percent of the total population.
This difference between the clinically proven prevalence of food allergy and the public perception of the problem is in part due to reactions called "food intolerances" rather than food allergies. A food allergy, or hypersensitivity, is an abnormal response to a food that is triggered by the immune system. The immune system is not responsible for the symptoms of a food intolerance, even though these symptoms can resemble those of a food allergy.
It is extremely important for people who have true food allergies to identify them and prevent allergic reactions to food because these reactions can cause devastating illness and, in some cases, be fatal.

Test for Food Allergies

Recent improvements in laboratory techniques have made blood testing for food and airborne allergens more reliable than they previously were. The test should include both IgE and IgG antibodies in order to identify both immediate and delayed type allergens. Good laboratories for this kind of testing can be found on our links page . Before having your blood tested, be sure to include any food you are suspicious of in your diet. The lab test may not indicate a reaction if you are not currently consuming that food.
While an elimination diet is less expensive, it is more cumbersome and may result in confusion or discouragement, particularly in children.
Test for Food Allergies can help with the following: Allergy Allergy to Foods (Hidden)
Allergic Tension Fatigue Syndrome

Autoimmune
Crohn's Disease
Finding out which foods may be triggering the inflammatory reaction is an important part of treating this disease. Often wheat, corn, dairy, and eggs are involved as in ulcerative colitis.
Circulation
Arrhythmias/Dysrhythmias

Digestion Constipation
Constipation triggered by food allergies might be responsible for chronic constipation in some adults. Individual foods, such as milk and milk-containing products, may be at fault in some individuals.

... Solutions A to Z Your Pet's Food Allergies
We have a 2-year-old wirehair fox terrier, Copper. We believe that he has food allergies but are having a hard time determining what sets him off. He scratches and chews at his skin. Someone recommended that we add vegetable oil to his food to rule out dry skin. We did that and he scratched himself raw, so we know that he is definitely allergic to soy (oil). Food allergies in dogs are very common and very frustrating to diagnose and treat. As of now, there are no reliable tests for food allergies in dogs. We can successfully test for inhalant or environmental allergies, such as dust mites or pollens, with blood tests or patch tests similar to those done for humans. We can only test for food allergies by doing dietary trials and eliminating a suspected food source from the pet's diet. Dogs can be allergic to more than one food source; commonly 2-3 food sources are to blame. The most common sources for causing food-related dermatitis are beef and soy. Usually dogs that have food allergies are also allergic to other things such as fleas, molds, or grasses. If you see that Copper is allergic to 10 things and two of those are in his diet, you may actually help stop his scratching by eliminating just those two even if the other eight allergens remain in his environment. Most cases of food allergy are seen in dogs that have been on the same diet for over two years. Therefore it is not necessarily related to a recent change in dog food. The amount of scratching may increase with the change in seasons if the pet is allergic to a combination of things.

Can Allergies Cause Behavior Problems? You may have heard conflicting information on this subject. There are many, many parents who swear dietary changes helped their ADD child, and yet most doctors and researchers deny that food allergies or sensitivities can cause the behaviors associated with ADD, their conclusions supposedly based on studies. If allergies can cause ADD behaviors, then shouldn't the studies verify that? The answer is yes, if the studies were designed properly. But according to The Center For Science in the Public Interest report in 1999 that concludes ADHD CAN be caused by foods and food additives After reading books, studies, and talking with affected parents I am convinced that some people (not just kids!) are reacting to foods and food additives by exhibiting ADD behavior. Diagnosis and Treatment
Stephen Barrett, M.D.
Many dubious practitioners claim that food allergies may be responsible for virtually any symptom a person can have. In support of this claim which is false they administer various tests purported to identify offending foods. Claims of this type may seem credible because about 25% of people think they are allergic to foods. However, scientific studies have found that only about 6% of children and 1-2% of adults actually have a food allergy, and most people with food allergies are allergic to less than four foods [1].
Cytotoxic Testing
The most notorious such test was cytotoxic testing , which was promoted during the early 1980s by storefront clinics, laboratories, nutrition consultants, chiropractors, and medical doctors. Advocates claimed it could determine sensitivity to food, which they blamed for asthma, arthritis, constipation, diarrhea, hypertension, obesity, stomach disorders, and many other conditions. However, controlled studies never demonstrated reliability, and some studies found it highly unreliable [2-5]. For example, one study found that white cells from allergic patients reacted no differently when exposed to substances known to produce symptoms than when exposed to substances to which the patients were not sensitive [6]. Government regulatory actions [7-10] and unfavorable publicity have almost driven cytotoxic testing from the health marketplace. But a few practitioners still perform it, and many use similar "food sensitivity" tests.

Introduction
The Classic Allergic Reaction
The following are the chain of events which happen in allergic reactions:
  • An allergen must be present in the body. This allergen is the substance which causes us to have an abnormal immunological response. Allergens tend to be protein molecules. Interestingly enough, the immune system only detects particles of a certain size as potential troublemakers and protein molecules are just the right size. In a small number of cases, the body actually responds to molecules other than proteins. These molecules, which are generally much smaller, are called haptens. By combining with protein molecules, haptens form larger complexes which can then be detected by the immune system The allergen is detected by the B cells. These are specialised immune cells, capable of producing antibodies. Just like allergens, antibodies are protein molecules, which have the capacity to neutralise allergens. Every B cell produces its own, specific antibody, depending on the type of intruder it needs to respond to. It is easy to understand why the body must have a ready pool of millions of antibodies, in order to combat these numerous offenders. There are five main categories of antibodies (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD and IgE) which the body releases under different circumstances (for instance to fight off various infections, etc.). In the case of allergies, the body produces the antibody immunoglobulin E (IgE), first discovered by the Ishizakas.

is it really a food allergy?
by Jenny Bryan Enriching the great British diet with exotic vegetables and fruits, herbs and spices has improved our image on the world food stage, but it could be proving too challenging for our prehistoric digestive systems. The plain, home cooking of the 1950s and '60s may have protected us against a range of digestive and other health problems that today's foodies are queuing up to call food allergies.
'A lot of people get symptoms after food and think it must be an allergy when, in fact, it's a digestive problem or a reaction to something else they've been in contact with,' says Ms Skypala. You also need to ask your doctor whether it would be wise to carry any medication with you for emergencies. If so, make sure friends and relatives know where it is and what to do if you have a bad reaction. All too often, neither she nor other food allergy experts can get to the bottom of their patients' discomfort, be it breathing problems, diarrhoea, vomiting, bloating or skin rashes. A veteran of countless allergy clinics over 20 years, Ms Skypala accepts that there has been a general increase in food allergies, especially the severe anaphylactic reactions which leave people gasping for breath and in rare cases can be fatal. But she believes that digestive problems linked to our changing eating patterns and much more varied diet may be at the root of what many people call food allergies.

The craving we have for certain foods may be a signal that we are allergic to them. They probably occur due to imbalances of our body to that food type. Nowadays tests are available to find out why we crave that pasta or sweet or bread. They check out for imbalances in various sugar types like glucose, lactose, fructose etc. They also check for irregularities in your metabolism and hormone levels which play an important part in digestion. Losing weight while having sugar cravings is forever an uphill battle. The very food type you are trying to avoid in all its forms seems to be your biggest weakness. I would always advise to have a complete check up done. If you do have a food allergy, it is something that can be treated. The faster you get over that, the better. You have to deal with hot flushes and the wildest of mood swings that are sure triggers for food cravings. You need to contact your weight buddy to help you get through this unscathed. There is nothing better than a friend to help you tide through those times.

Does your dog have Food Allergies?
If you knew the ingredients in commercial dog food you wouldn’t feed it to a dog, let alone your best friend. West Highland White Terriers are known for having food allergies. I know most of the Westies on the block (it’s a big block) and most of them have some kind of stomach problem or skin allergies. I have two West Highland White Terriers. Spooky and Elle. Elle is one year old, strong and naturally healthy but Spooky has had problems since he was a small puppy. With vomiting, diarrhea and blood in his stools I visited different vets every few months.
Food Allergies? After $1200.00 dollars in examination, x-rays and drugs, they all told me that it was probably a food allergy because they couldn’t find anything wrong in the blood work or examination. They sent me home with a special diet of “Duck and potatoes”, “Venison and potatoes” and finally “Salmon and potatoes”. Nothing worked so they switched me to a hypoallergenic dog food at an exorbitant price. Still my Spooky-boy would loose his appetite, refuse to eat and vomit bile. I was frantic so I finally went to see a vet in San Mateo who told me Spooky had Colitis along with food allergies. We kept him on the anti-allergy formula but added bran to his diet. He improved and started eating more, gained weight and looked happier. Westies with food allergies like these are all too common. We hope we can give you some hints on how to keep your Westie or any other dog with food allergies in tip top form.

Finding something to feed your child after he has been diagnosed with food allergies can often be a daunting proposition for the overwhelmed parent. These days, it appears that very few children are diagnosed early enough to be confined to a single allergen and if your child is like mine, it may actually seem like there is nothing normal for him to eat. Unless your child is anaphlyactic to a food, like peanuts or shellfish, it may actually be best for you to remove the allergens from his diet one by one. This reduces the inherent rebellion of taking away ALL his favourite foods at once and will also help to contain the withdrawal many children suffer when eliminating their identified allergic foods. Sometimes it is better to continue feeding one allergen while you eliminate another so that the child will be compliant with the dietary changes and can feel that he still has some control over his life. bodyOffer(17241) If, like my eldest son, your child were to be identified with allergies to gluten (the protein found in grains like wheat, rye, barley, spelt and kamut), bovine dairy products (cheese, milk, sour cream, butter and yoghurt), legumes (beans, peas and licorice and unfortunately including soy) it may be necessary for you to remove most of your childs regular diet. We went cold turkey on all his identified allergens, and we somehow made it through that period, but recent studies have shown that it probably would have been easier on us, and on our son, if we had started by removing dairy or gluten products but not both.

Food intolerance is a pharmacological reaction (like the side effects of a drug) to the chemicals in foods. Family history Allergy : hayfever, eczema or asthma Intolerance : migraine, irritable bowel symptoms, behaviour problems Who is affected? Allergies are most likely to affect babies and young children because of their underdeveloped immune system. Intolerances. Children are vulnerable because dose for weight they consume a higher dose of food chemicals than adults. Women of child-bearing age are vulnerable because of hormonal influence. Senior citizens are vulnerable because ageing livers and kidneys are slower to excrete chemicals from the body. Exposure to toxic chemicals, pharmaceutical drugs or illness such as gastrointestinal infection can trigger food intolerance. How common? Food allergies (not airborne allergies such as pollens) are considered to be relatively rare - affecting up to 8% of babies under 12 months, 3% of children under five, and less than 1% of adults. Food intolerance is much more common, affecting babies (through breastmilk), children and adults. Some experts suggest 10% are affected, although, in theory, everyone will react if the dose is high enough, so you would expect more people to be affected as levels of additives rise.
