Help and Hope for Those With
Food Allergies
A speaker once said that we can live a few weeks without food, a few days without water, a few minutes without air, but only a few seconds without hope. Hope is indeed essential to life, to living rather than just surviving or existing. Some people with food allergies discover what they are allergic to, avoid those foods, and by practicing avoidance faithfully, enjoy stable health for the rest of their lives. Some avoid their problem foods for a time, and then their allergies improve to the point that they can eat freely again. Yet others develop allergies to more and more foods as time goes on regardless of how faithful they are about their diets. I was once involved in a discussion on how to prevent the development of new food allergies. One person said that using a rotation diet and not eating any one food too often was the way to keep from developing more allergies. Another said that rotation diets could lead to eating single foods in large quantities, and that eating too much of any food could cause one to become allergic to it. Finally someone asked, "So what will prevent the development of more food allergies?" The answer given was, "Death!" This does indeed seem to be the situation for some people - a situation without hope. The purpose of this website is to give you hope. Just as a rainbow comes after the rain, so too can you enjoy good health again. By treating the underlying root causes of your food allergies, you may become healthier than you have ever been before. It might not be a quick process, and most of the time you will eat differently from those around you (at least at first), but you can again be healthy enough to enjoy your activities, friends, and family. You can truly live again rather than just survive.

Food Allergies in Dogs
FOOD ALLERGIES An allergy is a condition of unusual sensitivity to a substance or substances usually protein in nature which is perceived by the body as foreign. Signs of allergies in dogs may manifest as itching and in some cases diarrhea. Food allergies account for only about 5 to 10 percent of all allergic reactions in dogs and cats. Diagnosis of a food allergy is a demanding diagnostic process requiring strict dietary management to make sure no allergy-triggering food is ingested by your dog. Some food-allergic animals experience vomiting and diarrhea instead of - or along with - skin problems. Over the last 10 years in our practice, with the advent of endoscopy ( a fiber optic tube placed down into the stomach and intestine of animals), we have diagnosed food allergy as a component of vomiting and diarrhea. It is now felt, that food allergy is the primary component in certain cases of inflammatory bowel disease. By simply changing the diet to a hypoallergenic diet , which we will discuss later, and the intermittent use of corticosteroids, we have successfully treated this disease. If you bring your pet to the animal hospital with a complaint of itching or digestive distress, your veterinarian will first rule out more common causes of these signs. The rule-out process might include a physical examination and laboratory tests for flea allergy dermatitis, the most common cause of allergic skin disease of animals, inhalant allergies, seasonal reactions to pollen, mold spores, and dust mites, and food caused digestive intolerance, an acute adverse reaction to food that does not involve the immune system.

Food Allergy and Additive Intolerance. An Overview for Health workers by Dr Adrian Morris Food Allergy has always been a bit of a Cinderella Science often the topic of Media Fads and Fringe Medicine . It is falsely perceived to be the domain of controversial alternative medical practitioners and as a result is generally frowned upon by mainstream academic medicine. However, there can be some very serious and life threatening consequences of food allergy. Consider the dire results of Fish and Peanut Anaphylaxis. At our Allergy Clinic s at the Guildford Nuffield Hospital and at the London Medical Centre, of our referrals are for suspected food allergy . Patients are very aware of the symptoms of food allergy, which can be quite alarming. The prospect of a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction is always a major public concern. Patients may present with urticaria that they attribute to food allergy. An increasingly common food allergic presentation are oral symptoms such as itching and swelling of the mouth and throat and even laryngeal obstruction with respiratory difficulties. Successful testing for allergy can be very difficult without a clear history implicating a particular food. The tests we have available are often not 100% specific. We see both false negative and false positive skin and blood tests and then fresh food challenge testing may be necessary.

I have two sons who are both allergic to milk. My daughter has no food allergies. No one in our family has ever had this problem, so I have had to gain all of my knowledge through experience. I hope that in writing this, I can help other parents who are having similar problems with their children. My older son's first year was a difficult and often unhappy time. From the moment he came home he cried night and day, and was initially diagnosed with colic. He spit up often, and began to scare us with brief bouts of what appeared to be choking. At one month, he stopped breathing in my mother's arms. By the time I picked him up and stimulated him, he recovered his breath. Following an immediate visit to our pediatrician, our son was admitted to a children's hospital. After several tests, he was diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux and we were able to return home the next day. It was assumed that reflux was the cause of his previous discomfort, and he was prescribed medication to alleviate the pain. After seven months of switching reflux medications and dosages, the pain from our son's reflux was eased. However, the diarrhea and discomfort continued. The specialist strongly encouraged a switch from nursing to the use of Pregestimil, a "non-dairy, non-egg, non-soy, hypoallergenic predigested (and very expensive) formula." We reluctantly agreed, and soon found our son's pain to be significantly eased.

Breastfeeding mothers warned about food allergies
From staff and wire reports ATLANTA, Georgia People with food allergies and nursing mothers with a history of asthma or eczema may need to be more cautious about the foods they consume. A Canadian study of 23 healthy women found that nursing mothers may pass peanut proteins in breast milk to their infants. Such early exposure to the allergen could put babies at risk for developing a potentially fatal peanut allergy. Eight foods are known to cause 90 percent of severe food allergies: Peanuts Eggs Milk and milk by products Wheat Tree nuts Soy Fish Shellfish Source: U.S. Food and Drug Administration A recent Food and Drug Administration study also found that many food manufacturers fail to list highly allergenic ingredients such as peanuts, eggs and milk that are in their products. The study involved 85 manufacturers of baked goods, candy and ice cream, in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The FDA asked state inspectors to sample egg and peanut ingredients nationwide, following an increase in food recalls for failure to list food allergens.

    FOOD ALLERGIES
    RARE BUT RISKY
Do you start itching whenever you eat peanuts? Does seafood cause your stomach to churn? Symptoms like these cause millions of Americans to suspect they have a food allergy. But true food allergies affect a relatively small percentage of people: Experts estimate that only 2 percent of adults, and from 2 to 8 percent of children, are truly allergic to certain foods. Food allergy is different from food intolerance, and the term is sometimes used in a vague, all-encompassing way, muddying the waters for people who want to understand what a real food allergy is. "Many people who have a complaint, an illness, or some discomfort attribute it to something they have eaten. Because in this country we eat almost all the time, people tend to draw false associations between food and illness," says Dean Metcalfe, M.D., head of the Mast Cell and Physiology Section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
    ALLERGY AND INTOLERANCEDIFFERENT PROBLEMS
The difference between an allergy and an intolerance is how the body handles the offending food. In a true food allergy, the body's immune system recognizes a reaction-provoking substance, or allergen, in the foodusually a proteinas foreign and produces antibodies to halt the "invasion." As the battle rages, symptoms appear throughout the body. The most common sites are the mouth (swelling of the lips), digestive tract (stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea), skin (hives, rashes or eczema), and the airways (wheezing or breathing problems). People with allergies must avoid the offending foods altogether.

    Food Allergy and Intolerances
Food allergies or food intolerances affect nearly everyone at some point. People often have an unpleasant reaction to something they ate and wonder if they have a food allergy. One out of three people either say that they have a food allergy or that they modify the family diet because a family member is suspected of having a food allergy. But only about three percent of children have clinically proven allergic reactions to foods. In adults, the prevalence of food allergy drops to about one percent of the total population. This difference between the clinically proven prevalence of food allergy and the public perception of the problem is in part due to reactions called "food intolerances" rather than food allergies. A food allergy, or hypersensitivity, is an abnormal response to a food that is triggered by the immune system. The immune system is not responsible for the symptoms of a food intolerance, even though these symptoms can resemble those of a food allergy. It is extremely important for people who have true food allergies to identify them and prevent allergic reactions to food because these reactions can cause devastating illness and, in some cases, be fatal.

    The Diagnosis and Treatment
    of Food Allergies
The diagnosis of food allergies can seem complicated because reactions to foods are often delayed and may be affected by many factors, including insufficient rest, stress, and other allergens we are exposed to at the same time. Indeed, it is usually impossible to determine what you are allergic to on your own if you have more than a very few food allergies. Therefore, medical testing and help from the right health professionals is important. There are associations you can consult to find someone who can help you in your area. ( Click here for more information). Diagnostic Tools Elimination and challenge was the first type of testing used for food allergies. It is still often used in the clinical ecology units of hospitals or clinics and is considered the "gold standard" method of allergy testing for foods. The patient either fasts for several days (in a clinic under medical supervision) or at home eliminates the foods to be tested from the diet for five to ten days. The suspected foods are then eaten one at a time and symptoms are recorded. This method is difficult to use for delayed (non-IgE) food allergies. In severely allergic patients, it can be dangerous and should be used only under medical supervision, such as in a clinic setting. Intradermal or scratch skin tests are used by many conventional allergists and are good for inhalant allergies. However, they are usually not reliable for food allergies because they detect only IgE-mediated food allergies, which make up only about five percent of all food reactions.

While allergy to pollen or other environmental sources typically causes a lot of discomfort during spring, summer, and fall, food allergy is one condition that knows no season. According to the National Institutes of Health, true food allergy affects six to seven million Americans (approximately two percent of the U.S. population) and four to eight percent of young children, although surveys show that approximately one in three adults believe they have a food allergy. People tend to diagnose themselves, believing they have allergic reactions to certain foods or food ingredients. Unfortunately, self-diagnosis of food allergy often leads to unnecessary food restrictions, nutrient deficiencies, and misdiagnosis of potential life threatening medical conditions other than food allergy. Therefore, experts urge people to see a board-certified allergist for proper diagnosis of food allergy. What Is a Food Allergy?
