Who We Are
The Fresno Folklore Society (FFS) is a non-profit corporation founded for the purpose of preserving folk arts, especially traditional music, in California's San Joaquin Valley. It has existed in various forms for over thirty-five years. The present incarnation was begun in 1977 by a group of musicians who wanted to find ways to make folk music more available to those in the valley.

What We Do
We sing, we dance, we play music, and some tell stories. Above all we have fun and provide a venue for the community to hear and enjoy "alternative" music.
The goal of FFS is to promote music and dance of many cultures. We cater to fans of all sorts of music: Old-Time, Bluegrass, Cajun, Irish and other Celtic music, as well as swing and traditional jazz, Armenian, Greek, Balkanjust to name a few. In addition to providing an outlet for local Fresno Folk artists to perform and obtain publicity, FFS over the years has provided a venue for touring traditional artists.

HOPA!
International Folk Dance Performance Group
Knoxville, TN
Hopa! is an international folk dance group based in Knoxville, TN.
The group was started several years ago to promote and educate people about international folk dance through performances in schools, churches, and other local events. People all over the world express their ethnic traditions in music and dance. Whether these traditions are ancient or relatively modern, each expresses the soul of its respective community. One very effective way to learn about the world around us is to listen to indigenous music, dance to the music, and experience the celebration of life itself.

QUICK REFERENCE TO TYPES OF CYPRIOT DANCES
    • Syrtos: This folk dance, performed by men and women in couples in a circle, is very popular in social gatherings, weddings and religious festivals. It symbolizes the harmony between male and female roles in the Cypriot society.
    • Men's Dances ("Kartzilamas") : Men dance in pairs across from each other. These very lively dances demonstrate the virility and agility of the Cypriot men.
    • Women's Dances ("Kartzilamas"): Women dance in pairs to demonstrate their humility and grace. The movements of the dances show the Cypriot woman's needle work abilities.
    • Datsia: A dance performed in social gatherings and weddings. It demonstrates the agility of the dancer - a man - as well as his skill to balance glasses filled with wine centrifugally turned in a circular sieve.
    • Sickle Dance: A dance also performed in social gatherings and weddings by a man. He uses the sickle, which is very sharp, to show off his swiftness in harvesting.

MIT Folk Dance Club Songbook
This is a preliminary draft of the MIT Folk Dance Club Songbook. Although it still isn't quite finished, I decided that I might as well make the current version available now. The songbook is written in TeX, but it is contained in many files, so I'm making available here only a postscript file, which should be printable from any postscript printer. The songbook is 123 pages long, and the postscript file is 536K bytes. If you don't have a direct internet connection, you can save time by downloading the gzipped postscript file which is only 167K bytes (but you will need to decompress it). The index (3 pages) is in a separate file. I suggest that you try printing it first, so that in case there is a printing problem you'll find out without wasting too much paper. (As it turns out the page numbers in the index are wrong, so it's not really useful as an index, but it does have a list of all the songs. I will try to fix it when I have time.) There is a also a problem with spacing since I set all the line breaks with a slightly different sized font. However, the text should still be legible. Please tell me if you have any other problems with these files, though I can't guarantee I can help you.
